Abstract

Images of Japanese troops which drawn by Pramoedya in his works indeed related with his own experiences. Pramoedya through his characters portrays his view on humanities. Pramoedya depicted the brutality of Japanese troops in their occupation in Indonesia. All Japanese propaganda delivered false messages and caused disasters for Indonesian people. Japanese culture retardation and their brutality made the author suffer and down. Even though his novels associate with anti Japanese occupation and patriotism among the youth, humanities issues in fact appear as a strong theme in all his works.

Abstract

Abstract

What is meant by contemporary literature? The first thing that comes up in mind is that the terminology of contemporary literature points out to "literature that is new" or "literature that is very recent", and constitutes a new trend lastly in touch with public. With this, contemporarity might possibly be seen or measured on the basis of time frame. In China, contemporary literature is not measured merely by the most recent time and the changing literary trend in a certain period of time, it is apparently not free from the political influence of the goverment in power. Political guidance issued by the goverment in a certain period, will define the change in the literary trend in China. Uniquely, the literary trend in a certain period not merely brings out certain themes, but also followed by a great deal of literary works representing the emerging literary trend. In China, by reading a literary work, one will easily be able to detect when that kind of literary works approximately emerged, and who were the authors producing that works.

Abstract

This study is concerned with a productive word-form process in the morphological level, such as abbreviation. Through the process of the word form, I intend to find out how to make new words in using the abbreviation in English. Besides, I intend to review the concept of abbreviation. The aim of this study is also to observe how the abbreviation can form new words. The data employed in this study are from newspaper Jakarta Post and Kompas, and examples provided by the related linguists. With the data exemplified by the linguists and based on their discussion on abbreviation, I think there are some mistakes on information and definitions provided by them about the abbreviation. Hence, I try to present and find out new information about the abbreviation and its types morphologically. As the result of this study, there are 16 types of abbreviation. They are (1) acronyms, (2) part acronyms, (3) amalgam, (4) blends, (5) loan blends, (6) element blends, (7) part-whole blends, (8) lexical blends, (9) separated blends, (10) contraction, (11) letter symbol, (12) clippings, (13) alphabetism, (14) sycronyms, (15) acronym coinages, and (16) analogical forms.

Abstract

Europe has been interested in Indonesia for many centuries ago. The Dutch Government and the East-Indies Company (VOC), for example, already established the connection between Indonesian and German along with the colonization when the VOC brought the German Regiment to the islands of Indonesia. Nevertheless, this relationship was not in a friendly way but was the power one. German also adopted the domination of the colony by the Dutch. Bali as the foremost attraction for the Europe since the 19th century has become a place of destination to the western tourists in the 20th century. The transition of Balinese culture and people can be seen in every aspect. The novel Wayan zwischen Drogen und D monen shows how the Balinese in mid 20th century is influenced by the western culture and how they survive during the transition from tradition to modernity.
