Abstract

The Sorosuwan Palace played a major role for the kingdom of Banten in the period between the 16th century and the 19th century. In such a long period of time, the Sorosuwan Palace experienced ups and downs in its development. Based on a library research, it is known that the Sorosuwan Palace was renovated several times. This is most clearly seen in the differences found in the representations of the Sorosuwan Palace in the maps of Banten of 1596, of 1624 and of 1726. Outstanding changes can especially be seen in the maps of 1739, 1825, and 1900. The last three maps represent the Sorosuwan Palace as oblong in form with a bastion in each corner (which is similar to the present representation of the Keraton), while in the previous maps it is represented as a building with steps where it protrudes at the top, surrounded by other buildings. Field study reveals no indication that there had been two phases in the process of its building. This can be gathered from the remnants of the structure of the building in several places indicating that there had been a two-layered floor structure and an overlapped structure.

Abstract

Hermeneutics is a word that becomes popular lately especially among postmodernist people. Since the definition and the scope become broader, many groups of people can use hermeneutics nowadays. One of the application of hermeneutics is the interpretation of Al-Qur'an, the Moslems' holy bible. It is known that Moslems has their own way in interpreting their bible, with Tafsir. The focus of this paper is to convey the similarity and the difference between hermeneutics and Tafsir, and also the Moslems' opinion toward the interpreter who use hermeneutics as the frame of his interpretation.

Abstract

Old Javanese tales like Adiparwa and Sudamala are full of elements of curse cast by a man or a god. The curses take the form of words uttered full of emotion and anger to the addressee. Curses may result in a physical transformation or a change in the fate of the person cursed. A curse cast by a god demonstrates the power. A curse, however, eventually produces blessing. Curse and blessing are two things that are different from and opposite to one another.

Abstract

The Name of the Rose, a detective novel, is set by some issues on librarianship during the Middle Age in Europe. By using discourse analysis approach, I try to know how far the concept of the librarianship was understood at that time-in the novel-based on the understanding of some concepts, starting from "library", "development system", "collection handling", which includes "classification", "censorship system" and "librarians' professionalism", until some matters on borrowing and using collection. Besides, this analysis is aimed at identifying cultural values related to the librarianship. The conclusion shows that the librarianship has an important role in providing suspense elements in a detective novel.
