Abstract

Suboptimal breast milk production during the first days postpartum remains a primary barrier to successful exclusive breastfeeding. Oxytocin massage is a non-pharmacological intervention that works through hormonal reflex stimulation to facilitate milk expression. This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of oxytocin massage on breast milk output among postpartum mothers on days one through three at Sofifi General Hospital. A quasi-experimental pre-test post-test with control group design was applied to 15 respondents selected through purposive sampling. Breast milk volume was measured on the first, second, and third day and categorized as insufficient (< 7 ml), adequate (7–9.9 ml), or sufficient (≥ 10 ml). The Shapiro-Wilk normality test indicated non-normal data distribution, leading to analysis using the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test. Results showed that all respondents experienced progressive increases in milk volume, with Z values ranging from -3.410 to -3.414 and p = 0.001 across all daily comparisons. By the third day, 53.3% of respondents achieved the sufficient category. It is concluded that oxytocin massage is effective in increasing breast milk output among postpartum mothers on days one to three, and its integration into routine postpartum midwifery care protocols is strongly recommended.

Abstract

Stunting and underweight remain serious nutritional problems among children under five in Indonesia, with national prevalence rates of 17.1% for underweight and 21.6% for stunting, where maternal knowledge and education are presumed to play significant roles yet have rarely been examined simultaneously within a single research design. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between maternal education and nutritional knowledge, both before and after a health education intervention, with the weight status of children under five. A quasi-experimental one group pretest-posttest design was employed involving 40 mothers with children under five, selected through total sampling, and analyzed using Chi-Square test, Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test, and Spearman's rho correlation. Results revealed significant relationships between maternal education (p=0.000; r=0.869) and pre-intervention knowledge (p=0.000; r=0.951) with children's weight status, where all mothers with primary education had underweight children. The Wilcoxon test showed significant knowledge improvement post-intervention (Z=-6.000; p=0.000) with r=0.915 correlation to weight status, confirming the intervention's effectiveness. It is concluded that maternal formal education and nutritional knowledge are strong determinants of children's weight status. Health workers should prioritize intensive nutrition education for low-educated, low-knowledge mothers through sustained programs, while future research should employ control groups and larger samples.

Abstract

The high maternal mortality rate in Indonesia is partly attributable to insufficient knowledge among pregnant women regarding pregnancy danger signs. The Maternal and Child Health Book (MCH Book) is a print-based medium with strong potential as an effective maternal health education tool. This study aimed to analyze pregnant women's knowledge levels before and after education, identify the influence of MCH Book-based print media education, and describe the sociodemographic characteristics of respondents at UPT Puskesmas Rawat Inap Lifofa. A quantitative approach with a pre-experimental one group pretest-posttest design was employed. The sample consisted of 30 pregnant women selected through total sampling. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test. Prior to the intervention, 36.7% of respondents had poor knowledge and 43.3% had moderate knowledge. Following the intervention, 86.7% achieved good knowledge. Statistical analysis yielded Z = -4.490 with p-value = 0.000 (p < 0.05), confirming a significant effect of MCH Book education on improving pregnant women's knowledge of pregnancy danger signs. These findings imply the need for structured optimization of MCH Book utilization within antenatal care services at primary health facilities.

Abstract

Nutritional quality during the toddler phase reflects the success of biological need fulfillment underpinning child health, growth, and developmental trajectories. Nutritional deficiency and imbalance persist as public health challenges, particularly within rural communities bearing distinct social characteristics and service access configurations diverging considerably from urban counterparts. This landscape undergoes conditioning by multiple determinants, encompassing maternal capacity in comprehending nutritional principles alongside caregiving patterns operationalized throughout child rearing. This examination explores the interconnection between both aspects and toddler nutritional conditions within the service territory of Puskesmas Desa Dikawongo Hari. An analytic quantitative approach through cross-sectional design was conscripted as the investigational foundation, recruiting 30 mothers through purposive sampling. Maternal knowledge and caregiving practices were positioned as predictor components, whilst weight-for-age index served as the outcome component. Information was harvested through questionnaire instruments combined with anthropometric data and processed through Spearman Rank correlation. Statistical calculations yielded r = 0.851 with p = 0.000 for maternal knowledge, whilst caregiving practices produced r = 0.861 with p = 0.000. These outputs signal that maternal nutritional literacy expansion alongside appropriate caregiving habit fortification warrants positioning as a prioritized thrust within toddler nutritional condition improvement endeavors.
