Abstract

Applying certain psychological designations to six short stories selected from Hemingway’s Men Without Women, the present paper investigates the variable defense mechanisms that occur in the behavioral manifestations of the fictional characters. The characters’ stressed reactions are examined in accordance with given patterns of defense mechanisms before placing them within the broader framework of autobiographical repressed anxieties. The study concludes that the represented characters project Hemingway's unconscious defenses against three major sources of anxiety: the feminized dominance over his world which leads to the fear of emasculation, the sense of nostalgia for a lost male company, and the post-traumatic stress disorders caused by his terrible war experience.

Abstract

This research focuses on two review texts published in a teenage magazine called Teen Ink. It is aimed to discover the language style and text structure used by the same text producer. Using Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) approach, this research describes the register and genre employed in the two analyzed texts. The analysis was done by examining and comparing the generic structure and the metafunctions of each text. The description of data led to the interpretation of field, tenor, and mode. From the genre analysis, it can be seen that the text producer follows the same text structure for both texts, though differences were found in the technique used to compose each stage of the text. In terms of register, different dominant transitivity and circumstance types were found in both texts. Meanwhile, the text producer puts all participants surrounding the texts in equal position, and positive assessment is implied in both texts. In addition, as the texts are written in a language style that tends to be spoken, the texts are considered appropriate for the medium, namely the review column of Teen Ink magazine.

Abstract

This study is a qualitative research implementing sociolinguistics approach which aims to gain deeper insights on swearing words exploited in Deadpool 2 movie by the main character of the film. Focusing on the analysis of types and functions of swearing words, the data of this study were taken in the form of utterances produced by Wade Wilson or Deadpool as the main character of the film containing swearing words. Using a conceptual framework of swearing words and their function proposed by Anderson & Trudgill (1990) and classification theory of types of swearing words suggested by Battistellla (2005), the result of the analysis of this study finds out that the use of swearing words by a character in the film as directed by the director provides a unique way to understand the basic characteristic of the character. In the case of this study, Wade Wilson through the analysis of this research, despite having traumatic background and producing more swearing words than any other characters in the film, can be considered somewhat of a good person worthy of the titlle ‘superhero’.lin

Abstract

This research outlines the embodiment of the aspect of heroism and traditional femininity of a female figure in Barbie in Princess Power. The title of the movie undeniably raises a question on the conflicting image between masculine heroism and traditional femininity. Thus, this research aims to explore whether the movie embodies the aspect of heroism or perpetuates the traditional feminine figure. The finding reveals that women are constructed to glorify the femininity and to remain on the domestic sphere. Though the movie portrays some aspects of heroism which entails an active role in public sphere, the journey is diminished through the normalization of female figure in order to drag women into its natural sphere, to become a heroine.

Abstract

This study was undertaken to examine the type of idiomatic expressions, translation techniques used by translators in translating the idioms from English into Indonesian, as well as to assess the translation quality in terms of accuracy, acceptability, and readability. This research adopted a descriptive qualitative method since the result of this study were expressed in words and sentences. Documents and informants were used as data sources. The data consisted of all idiomatic expressions in the form of phrases taken from the Webtoon comic 'Winter Woods,' while the informants were three raters who assisted in classifying the types of idioms, translation technique, and assessing translation quality in terms of accuracy, acceptability, and readability. In choosing the source of data and the raters, this study used a purposive sampling technique to select a text that has a sufficient number of idioms and informants. The data were gathered using two methods: content analysis and focus group discussion.According to the research findings, there are 94 idioms in the 'Winter Woods' comic. It was found that 5 out of 6 types are found. They are phrasal verb, prepositional phrase, idiom with a verb as a keyword, idiom with a noun as a keyword, and idiom with an adjective as a keyword. It was discovered that the translators applied six different translation techniques to translate the idioms. They are idioms with similar meanings and forms, idioms with similar meanings but different forms, paraphrase, borrowing, omission of the idiom's play, and omission of the entire idiom.Phrasal verb is the dominant type of idiom found in the source language because about 80 percent of verbs in English are PV. This is the reason why PV is the dominant type of idiom found in the ‘Winter Woods’ comic. Of 6 translation techniques, paraphrase is the dominant technique used by the translators to translate phrasal verb since there is no such language structure as phrasal verb in target language. According to translation quality assesment, the translation of idiomatic expressions in ‘Winter Woodss’ comic is considered as accurate, acceptable, and readable as the translators have accurately transfered the meaning of the idioms while at the same time making it easy for the target readers to understand. Furthermore, any translation techniques are welcome in translation (in this case, idiom translation) as long as the message is fully conveyed in target language.
