Abstract

Politeness is not merely etiquette; it shapes how language conveys identity, emotion, and social connection. This study investigates politeness strategies in Soul (2020), a Pixar film that blends lighthearted storytelling with philosophical themes. Using Brown and Levinson’s (1987) framework comprising Bald on Record, Positive Politeness, Negative Politeness, and Off-Record strategies the study adopts a qualitative descriptive method. Data were collected from the film’s official script and cross-checked through multiple viewings for contextual accuracy. A total of 65 utterances were identified: 29 instances of positive politeness, 21 bald on record, 8 negative politeness, and 7 off-record strategies. These findings suggest the film prioritizes affirming, empathetic communication to navigate relationships and emotional transformation. The analysis demonstrates how politeness is used not only to manage social harmony, but also to express vulnerability and personal growth. Ultimately, the study highlights how animated dialogue can serve as a rich site for examining the interplay between language, meaning, and identity in animated storytelling.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate and analyze the types and strategies of request used by the characters in the movie Frozen II based on their social contexts. It is aimed to find the influences of social factors (power, social distance) and movie stages (orientation, complication, evaluation, resolution) to the use of types and strategies of request by the characters of the movie using pragmatics approach based on Trosborg’s (1995) theory to reveal the types and strategies of request expressions, and the theory of social context by Brown and Levinson (1987) regarding power and social distance relationship. The results show that the use of types and strategies of request by the characters  in the movie Frozen II are influenced by context of situation (power and social distance) and also the movie stages (orientation, complication, evaluation, resolution). The types and strategies of request used by the characters in each movie stage are different.

Abstract

Interpersonal meaning has important role in communication to achieve good connection among the speaker and the hearer. There are many ways in realizing interpersonal meaning, one of which is by investigating mood and modality used. Consequently, this study aims to analyze the mood and modality types identified in Taylor Swift’s speech at New York University. This study applies systemic functional linguistics in terms of interpersonal meaning proposed by Halliday and Matthiessen (2014). This study also implements qualitative method to answer the problems of the study which taken from Taylor Swift’s utterances during her speech contained mood and modality types as the data. However, the writers use data analysis technique by Miles and Huberman (1994). As the result, there are 195 clauses indicated as mood types which are divided into three types. There are 173 clauses classified as declarative mood types which made it the most frequently used by the speaker. Besides, there are 55 clauses categorized as modality types by making the modalization type as the dominant clause occured in the speech with the occurrences of 32 clauses.

Abstract

This paper highlights the significance of the interplay between pragmatic and multimodal approaches in constructing characterizations in Webtoon. Other studies often analyze the linguistic and visual elements separately, making this research that combines pragmatic theory and multimodal analysis in understanding character personality construction remain limited. This paper fills this gap by conducting an integrated analysis of the main character, Camellia, in the Indonesian Webtoon Garden of the Dead Flower. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, 41 dialogue panels were found where Camellia used the non-observance maxim of Grice's Cooperative Principle. It focuses on analyzing how the data of flouting and violating maxim synergize with multimodal cues. The results show that Camellia's characterization is explicitly constructed by flouting maxim of relevance and violating maxim of quality. This pragmatic strategy depicts her character as cunning and strategic yet vulnerable. The analysis also found that the multimodal cues amplify these pragmatic choices, such as expressive close-ups, camera framing, and typography. This study concludes that Camellia’s characterization is constructed together by linguistic and visual design, offering a robust model for analyzing characterization in digital narrative media.

Abstract

This study examines the translation strategies used in the Indonesian subtitles of song lyrics in the musical film The Greatest Showman (2017). Unlike translations intended for singing, subtitles prioritize readability and comprehension, requiring adjustments to meaning, structure, and cultural references. The research explores how the official Indonesian subtitles adapt the lyrics while maintaining coherence and accessibility for local audiences. Through a qualitative content analysis of selected lyrics, the study identifies dominant translation strategies using Gottlieb’s (1992) subtitling framework and Vermeer’s Skopos theory (1978). Findings reveal that only seven strategies are used in the Disney+ version, with transfer as the most dominant. Overall, the subtitles fulfill their communicative function, aligning with Skopos theory by preserving purpose, coherence, and fidelity within the target culture. This research contributes to audiovisual translation studies by highlighting the challenges of translating non-singable song subtitles and the importance of strategic choices in producing functional and culturally appropriate translations.

Abstract

This research examines the linguistic strategies and ideological meanings embedded in Zohran Mamdani’s 2025 mayoral victory speech by applying Van Djik’s Critical Discourse Analysis framework. Through an exploration of the macrostructure, superstructure, and microstructure, the study shows how Mamdani shapes a progressive political persona, builds a sense of shared agency, and contests the dominance of established power holders. On the macrostructural level, the speech is organized around five key ideas: the reclaiming of political power by working-class groups, the forging of broad-based solidarity, the portrayal of the election win as a historical turning point, the outlining of concrete policy proposals, and New York City’s role in resisting nationwide right-wing movements. The superstructure analysis indicates that the speech combines typical features of victory addresses with rhetorical elements commonly found in social movements, such as collective emotional release and explicit challenges to political opponents. Meanwhile, the microstructural analysis reveals intentional lexical patterns, vivid depictions of labor, extensive use of inclusive pronounse, and recurring metaphors particularly those involving grasping, breathing, and light that help construct its message of transformation.

Abstract

This research analyses simile and metaphor translation in six songs from Olivia Rodrigo’s “GUTS” album (All-American Bitch, Bad Idea Right?, Vampire, Lacy, Ballad of Homeschooled Girl, and Making the Bed). It identifies various types of simile and metaphor, analyses translation techniques used by translator, and assessed the translation quality focusing on accuracy and acceptability. Translating simile and metaphor is challenging because not all of them can be translated literally due to different cultures. There are found 109 data consisting of 23 similes and 86 metaphors. The researcher found three types of simile (animal, concrete-to-abstract, and synaesthetic) and four types of metaphor (anthropomorphic, animal, concrete-to-abstract, and synaesthetic). In The results reveal that there are three translation techniques proposed by Larson implemented by the translator. Besides, the translator also implemented his own technique. The analysis of accuracy shows that 8 similes and 24 metaphors are considered accurate, 9 similes and 48 metaphors are considered less accurate, and lastly 6 similes and 14 metaphors are considered inaccurate. The analysis of acceptability shows that 14 similes and 56 metaphors are considered acceptable, 7 similes and 30 metaphors are considered less acceptable, and 2 similes are considered unacceptable. The findings show that preserving the original imagery of similes and metaphors leads to the highest quality translations, supporting previous research.

Abstract

This study examined how a digital comic represented dynamic bodily movement and abstract emotional experience within a static visual medium. The object of analysis was the one-shot webtoon If It’s Okay With You, Teacher by Studio Paran (2022), which depicted the transformation of a ballet technician into an emotionally expressive artist. The main problem addressed in this research was the semiotic challenge of visualizing fluid ballet movement and the intangible emotion of first love through static images. This research employed a qualitative approach using Multimodal Discourse Analysis, focusing on Visual Grammar. The analysis explored representational, interactive, and compositional meanings in selected panels, paying particular attention to bodily posture, gaze, implied motion, spatial arrangement, and color composition. The findings showed that the webtoon successfully simulated movement through implied vectors, sequential panel structure, and expressive body orientation, while emotional transformation was conveyed through facial expressions, gaze direction, and gradual shifts in color tone. The vertical-scrolling format further functioned as a semiotic resource that structured narrative rhythm and emotional progression. The study concluded that visual grammar provided an effective framework for understanding how static digital images could construct the illusion of motion and articulate invisible emotional states.

Abstract

Indonesian horror movies are often characterized by their deep engagement with culturally specific concepts forming the narratives. When these films are introduced to international audiences through streaming platforms, the synopses, which are intended to be brief and persuasive, must balance clarity with cultural integrity. This study investigates two key issues: (1) the translation techniques employed to render culturally embedded horror-related concepts from Indonesian into English, and (2) the extent to which these techniques influence the representation of Indonesian cultural identity in the translated synopses. The data are 43 culturally embedded horror concepts and their English translated versions taken from Netflix. Using four stages of ethnography approach as the data analysis technique, results revealed that the translation techniques used are: literal translation, modulation, generalization, adaptation, borrowing, and established equivalence. Meanwhile, the impacts of the translation techniques towards the representation of Indonesian culture are categorized into: preservation, transformation, and reduction. This study contributes theoretically to the frameworks of translator’s decisions on cultural visibility. Practically, it also gives insights on the possible problems and solutions of rendering culturally specific concepts in short, high-stakes texts aimed at global viewers.   Keywords: culture, movie, synopsis, techniques, translation

Abstract

The role of literature in human life is inseparable from the process of forming thoughts, feelings and an understanding of reality. In its development, literature does not exist in isolation but is always linked to the times and prevailing currents of thought. Second, this song also blurs the line between entertainment and social criticism. The characteristics of postmodernism can be found in various fields, including art, literature and popular culture. The relationship between postmodernism and literature becomes even more intriguing when literary works appear not only in conventional forms such as novels or poetry, but also in more popular forms, such as songs. One example of a work that can be analysed within this framework is Lil Dicky’s song “Earth.” The song was created to raise awareness of the importance of protecting the environment and addressing the climate crisis. From a literary perspective, Earth employs personification as one of its primary devices. From a postmodern perspective, “Earth” exhibits several distinctive characteristics. Second, this song also blurs the line between entertainment and social criticism. In addition, “Earth” can also be linked to the discourse on sustainable development as articulated in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
