Abstract

This research attempts to describe the image of women empowerment in the era of postfeminism that is represented by Fifth Harmony’s self-objectification image in their four music videos; Work from Home, Boss, Worth It and That’s My Girl. This research is descriptive qualitative. The method employed consists of watching, classifying and analyzing the data that are collected by selecting the scenes, lyrics and other elements of music video representing the image of self-objectification and postfeminism.From the analysis, Fifth Harmony in their music videos use their self-objectification image to portray the values of women empowerment in post-feminism era. The music videos are portraying the issues of domesticity (femininity and sexuality) as women’s choice and source of power, confident and successful independent women as a symbol of Girl Power and sisterhood as source of women’s power in the era of postfeminism.

Abstract

The object  of this study is translation of the charactonyms in the book The Silmarillion by J. R. R. Tolkien. This objective of this study is to analyze the techniques used by the translator in translating the charactonyms and the impact of the techniques on the quality of the translation of the charactonyms in terms of accuracy and acceptability. The data are charactonyms found in the book, their translations and the quality assessed with the help of informants. The data were collected using content analysis and focus group discussion. As many as 196 charactonyms from the novel The Silmarillion were discovered and analyzed. This research also unveiled that the translator uses 27 techniques that use six of Fernandes’ (2006) techniques—rendition, copy, addition, transcription, transposition, and deletion—either as single or combined technique, in which 3 techniques are single techniques and 24 are combined techniques. The overall score for the accuracy of the translation is 2.98 and for acceptability is 2.45, making the overall score being 2.72.

Abstract

This research aims to answer how the issues of Black racial stereotype and race relationship are being used in the Chris Rock’s standup comedy entitled Never Scared. The issues of Black racial stereotype and race relationship are analyzed through the portrayal of living in US as Black people in the eyes of Chris Rock, an influential American Black comedian. This research is a descriptive qualitative research which uses Arthur Asa Berger’s techniques of comedy theory as an approach. As a result, this research finds that living in US as Black people is likely to be exposed by racial violence involving White people. The result also signifies how Black people are considered as inferior race in US society which then leads to the mentioning of racial discrimination towards Black people.

Abstract

Gish Jen’s Typical American is a portrayal of Chinese immigrants’ struggles in adapting the life in America (USA). The main characters started to live in the USA; they, however, were struggling in trying to maintain their Chinese values as well as embracing the new American culture. In the process of adjusting this new culture, they had to cope with things that were not always suitable for their prior culture as Chinese. It is found that there are two dominant types of acculturation process presented by the characters in this novel: (1) separation when Ralph’s family maintained their original culture through family reunification and Chinese women’s role perpetuation in the family; and (2) assimilation shown by the rejections to maintain their original culture since the main characters have been influenced by American doctrines. It reveals also that in Gish Jen’s Typical American, acculturation was one of the ways to cope with the culture shock that they experienced as the first generation of Chinese immigrants in the USA. This research reveals also that cultural values were something fluid, although there were differences between Chinese and American cultures that affect one's belief, they were able to adapt to the new culture with some adjustments.

Abstract

This research examines the construction of the enemy in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds (2009) as postmodern enemy through the portrayal of the Nazi. Applying Derrida's deconstruction theory to see how Hollywood cinematic convention is being deconstructed, the analysis shows that the Nazi are being deconstructed through the following construction: 1) wearing distinctive outfit, 2) being dehumanized as evil, 3) having different purpose from the hero, 4) being on the losing side, and 5) being racially different. The Nazi shows some qualities of not being stereotypical enemy: they are depicted to show patriotism, loyalty, and compassion. The blurry characteristics between hero and enemy shows postmodernity.

Abstract

 This research studies about deixis used by McDonald’s webpage content. There are two objectives of this research. The first objective is to identify the types of deixis used by McDonald’s webpage content and the second objective is to analyze the referents meaning of the deixis used by McDonald’s webpage content. The research method is descriptive qualitative method with data analysis technique, that is content analysis design. The result of the research shows that there were 94 deixis used by McDonald’s web page content. The data of deixis types are classified into five types. They are person deixis, time deixis, place deixis, social deixis and discourse deixis. In this research, person deixis became the most dominant type of deixis used by McDonald’s. person deixis in addressing McDonald’s teams and McDonald’s customers. The usage of social deixis to address McDonald’s partners and the relation, discourse deixis for explaining the discourse in upcoming and prior portion about the McDonald’s content in the McDonald’s webpage. Next, place deixis is used to mention the location and the time deixis is used for referring the specific time.

Abstract

This article examines the types of swearing employed by the characters in the movie Sweet Sixteen, knowing how the contextual situation affects the use and the meaning of swearing, and knowing how the sociocultural background of the characters influences the level of swearing' offensiveness. This research is a descriptive qualitative research under the framework of Sociopragmatics study. The relationship between social phenomena and methods becomes the focus of this research.

Abstract

This research focuses on the translation analysis of taboo expressions in “Deadpool 2” movie. This study aims to find out (i) the type of taboo in the movie and (ii) the techniques employed by two different translators from different platforms to translate taboo expressions. This is a descriptive-qualitative research. The sources of data in this research are the dialogue in movie titled “Deadpool 2” and its Indonesian subtitles produced by 2 different translators, also respondents to assess the translation acceptability whichh in this research called as familiarity. The data in this research are 167 data of taboo expressions found in the said movie and its translations and information from respondents concerning familiarity of the translations. The results of the analysis of the category of taboo expression shows that from 167 data there are eight categories of taboo that are identified in “Deadpool 2”. The categories are sexual references (41%), profane or blasphemous (11%), scatological referents and disgusting object (10%), some animal names (2%), ethnic-racial-gender slurs (1%), insulting references to perceived psychological, physical, or social deviations (7%), ancestral allusions (2%), and offensive slang (25%). The analysis of translation techniques employed by the two translators shows that in total there are eleven translation techniques, namely maintaining with the same lexical items, maintaining with different lexical items, mitigating with the same lexical items, mitigating with different lexical items, generalization, deletion, translating to proper interjection, euphemism, reformulation, substitution and literal translation. 
“Let Alone at Miss Universe”: Siera Bearchell as Embodiment of Cultural Resistance of Femininity in Miss Universe Asyifa Quamilla

Abstract

The existence of plus size contender in Miss Universe has broken down the normalization of slenderness which has been one of manifestations of femininity in American society and its beauty pageant industries. The plus size lens is brought by Siera Bearchell who has been placed on Top 9 in Miss Universe 2016 edition to resist the cultural normalization of slender body size. By using textual analysis, this research focuses on Siera Bearchell’s YouTube videos and news articles related to the plus size contender to investigate the way she embodies the cultural resistance through her personal practices in the Miss Universe pageant. This research shows that Siera Bearchell has failed at embodying the dominant ideology of feminine slender ideal in Miss Universe. However, this failure cannot put Siera Bearchell to cultural obedience to the bodily ideal. This occurs since Siera Bearchell has resisted the cultural normalization by embodying her plus size body as a state for personal space and freedom. Therefore, the symbol of normalization of feminine slender size contradicts her identity as the plus size contender. Ultimately, this research shows that the existence of plus size contender in Miss Universe has been a symbol of cultural resistance of femininity in the American beauty pageant.

Abstract

This article aims to portray the Orientalism of Arabs in Larry Charles’s film The Dictator (2012). The research applies Edward Said’s Orientalism to define the Western perspective in representing the awful images of Arabs in the film. It also deploys post-colonial discourse and comedy film theory in defining the distorted images of Arabs which often represented not as its natural form in this comedy genre film. As the result – throughout many Western and Orientalist creations – Arabs are depicted as bomber, barbaric and lustful.
