Abstract

A B S T R A C TThis research aims to analyze hegemony in Terra Nullius a novel by Claire. G. Coleman uses Antonio Gramsci’s theory in literary studies and sociology. The research focuses on discussing the concept of hegemony that occurs in the main character. The theory in literary studies is used to analyze the novel, using an intrinsic approach including characterization, plot, and setting which is elaborated through an extrinsic approach related to hegemony. This research used a qualitative method with data collection techniques including literature study, observation, and note-taking. The main data used are novels and several books and journals to support the research. The results of the research in the novel Terra Nullius are the concept of hegemony and the state involving civil society, namely the Natives called Aboriginals, with Settlers communities, Europeans. In the hegemony that occurs, the practice of supremacy has been found, namely a group that manifests itself in leadership that dominates the opposition to destroy or subdue the Aboriginals with weapons. All done to win power over the nobody land called Australia. Consequently, it became an Integral state, a hegemony shielded by the systems of violence.

Abstract

This research is conducted to identify types, strategies, and functions of flouting maxims and types of humor theory in the utterances produced by the characters in Fresh Off the Boat Season 1. The discussion is then used to analyze the relation between characters’ roles in the story and their goals, the choice of flouting maxims, and the type of humor that later resulted. This research is qualitative descriptive research that applies a pragmatic approach. The data were examined using four steps of analysis: domain analysis, taxonomy analysis, componential analysis, and cultural theme analysis. The result shows that the roles of the characters and their goals in conversation influence the choice of types and strategies of flouting maxims, which later also affected the types of humor theory. The positive functions tended to fall into the incongruity theory type of humor, while the negative functions were more likely to produce the superiority and relief theories type of humor.

Abstract

This study looks at how the protagonist and antagonist characters in the novel "Boys Don't Cry" employ affect, as well as the characterization that results.  The purpose of this study is to examine the forms of affect employed by the characters, as well as the characterization manifested, and to explain how the usage of affect and characterization evolved based on the narrative text's general structure.  This study used descriptive qualitative research with embedded single case study.  To achieve the objectives, this study employs appraisal framework and characterization theory.  The research location takes the form of a novel entitled "Boys Don't Cry". The findings revealed 278 applications of affect, the majority of which were negative-antipathy affect.  The findings also indicate that affect influences character characterization, with negative-irritable characterization being the most prevalent attribute.  Furthermore, it was discovered that the usage of affect evolves based on the narrative text's general structure, which determines the development of characterization.

Abstract

The research conducted at MA Al Ukhuwah Sukoharjo aimed to explore second language acquisition among high school students, specifically focusing on error types and factors influencing these errors with a gender-based analysis. Utilizing a descriptive qualitative approach and the four stages of analysis—domain, taxonomic, componential, and cultural theme—the study identified 841 errors, with misformation errors comprising the majority at 51.6%. Female students exhibited a higher error rate at 80.38% compared to their male counterparts (19.62%). Causes of errors, such as overgeneralization, incomplete rule application, incorrect hypothesis conception, and ignorance of rule restrictions, were identified, with the latter significantly impacting language mastery. These findings provide valuable insights for educators, informing strategies to address challenges in mastering English, particularly in areas like tense usage, sentence structure, diction, and conjunctions among high school students at MA Al Ukhuwah Sukoharjo.

Abstract

This research aims to explore the practical application of Google Docs to facilitate collaborative writing within an EFL writing class at Universitas PGRI Jombang. Engaging 22 EFL students enrolled in an English paragraph writing course, the study employed participant observation and structured interviews as data collection methods. While all 22 students used Google Docs for collaborative writing during the participant observation phase, only a subset of 10 students were chosen for in-depth structured interviews to uncover their experiences. The findings revealed a positive reception among students toward Google Docs' functionalities, particularly real-time editing, commenting, and auto-saving. These tools significantly eased the exchange of ideas, fostering productive discussions and seamless real-time cooperation. However, the study also identified certain challenges, including uneven participation levels among students and potential distractions within the digital realm.

Abstract

This research aims at understanding how #dragqueeUSA challenge the concept of beauty and examining how #dragqueenUSA offer the plurality of beauty. This research Focuses on the 15 self-images posted in the hashtag takes into account the theory of myth of beauty and performativity act. The examination looks at the flexibility of beauty, the importance of makeup changes, and the relationship between the body and creativity. As a result, the Instagram hashtag #dragqueenUSA presents a fresh interpretation of beauty that eventually gives rise to posthumanism. Thus, the definition of beauty has expanded to include attributes other than just feminine beauty.

Abstract

This study explores how flouting maxims and social context contribute to the character development of Elle Woods in Legally Blonde (2001). It identifies the types and strategies of flouting used, examines their illocutionary functions, and analyzes their role across different stages of the narrative. Using a qualitative, pragmatic approach and Spradley’s ethnographic analysis, 123 utterances from the movie script were analyzed. Elle was found to flout all four maxims—quantity, quality, relevance, and manner—using strategies like overstatement, sarcasm, and ambiguity. These often occurred in high power and high distance contexts (+P +D), with relevance being the most flouted. The dominant illocutionary function was competitive. The findings show that Elle’s use of flouting maxims shifts alongside her growth, highlighting their role in portraying her transformation from a stereotypical "blonde girl" to a capable law graduate.

Abstract

This study aims to find all indirect expressive speech acts in the It End With Us novel, classify them, examine if they underwent a shift in the translation, and assessed the quality of the translation. This is a descriptive qualitative research and used purposive sampling technique. The data were later analyzed using content analysis method and were verified in Focus Group Discussion. It was discovered that this novel contained 33 indirect expressive speech acts with the following classification: boasting (10), deploring (8), complimenting (5), lamenting (5), forgiving (2), condoling (1), thanking (1), and apologizing (1). No data underwent a shift in indirectness. It can be concluded that the difficulty of translating indirect expressive speech acts is affected by several factors such as the cultural disparity between the source and target language, finding the equivalent words in the target language, and the minimum understanding on the context of the work. Additionally, the score for accuracy and acceptability is 2,81 and 2,55, while the final score of the Translation Quality Assessment is 2,68, indicating that despite the translation being imperfect, the translator has overall successfully translated the indirect expressive speech acts into the target language.

Abstract

Analyzing politeness strategies in classroom interaction can reveal the communications between teachers and students during classes. Furthermore, it can reflect the relationship of both parties and thus can be used as a mean to improve the quality of the teaching-learning process. This research is conducted to analyze the types of politeness strategies found in the teachers’ utterances in English teaching-learning process. Observations are conducted in two English classes at one of public schools in Karanganyar, Central Java, Indonesia. The subjects of the research are two English teachers. The data were analyzed using data reduction, data display, conclusion, and verification. The data were classified under the theory of politeness strategies as proposed by Brown and Levinson. The results revealed that the English teachers performed four types of politeness strategies with a total of 239 data. The different dominant politeness strategies from the two teachers showed that the intentions aimed by the teachers in classroom interactions are different. The first teacher showed the use of bald on record strategy as the dominant strategy showing the emphasis on directness and the use of simple utterances. Meanwhile, the second teacher tended to use politeness strategy to show closeness and friendliness to the students.

Abstract

As TikTok continues to gain popularity for its short-form videos, romance-related content has become a prominent genre, often promoting specific ideals and norms in romantic relationships. This study analyzes the influence of TikTok on shaping romantic expectations among male and female users. Using a qualitative approach, this research involved semi-structured interviews with young adults who actively engage with romance-themed TikTok content. The findings reveal that male participants highly maintained traditional views of masculinity and financial responsibility, such as the expectation to be the primary provider, before and after consuming such content. Female participants, meanwhile, experienced more noticeable shifts in expectations—holding flexible and realistic views on romance, but later expressing greater desire for visible emotional and financial investment from partners. Despite these influences, both genders demonstrated critical engagement with the content, often distinguishing between social media ideals and real-life relationship values. This research emphasizes TikTok’s dual role as a platform that both strengthens and challenges traditional gender norms in romantic contexts. While some creators show how men should not share their emotional vulnerability, others challenge these norms by promoting emotional openness between men and their partners. Users, in turn, selectively compare these portrayals in line with their personal experiences.
