Abstract

This study uses van Dijk’s version of Critical Discourse Analysis perspective to examine the news construction of Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia’s disbandment in two online newspapers. The two online newspapers used in this study are the Jakarta Post and Jakarta Globe. From the analysis, it shows us that based on textual analysis, the government and HTI are portrayed as two opposing parties. The government is described as ruling regime having authority to maintain national interests that is Pancasila as well as national unity, diversity, and security, while HTI is described as the organization against national interest. Thus, the disbandment of HTI is a correct step to defend national interests. This is in accordance with the developing discourse in society that the existence of HTI is considered to endanger Pancasila. Furthermore, this research revealed that the history, vision mission, previous experience and the political interest of special political elites in media has had decisive influence in transforming reality into news texts.

This research analyses some issues related to the representation of the Eastern and the Western Europe as the metaphore of East and West and the postcolonial issue reflected on Bram Stoker’s Dracula. The aims of this research are to reveal Eastern and the Western Europe as the metaphore of East and West and the postcolonial issue reflected onthe novel. This research applies theory of Orientalism and theory of ambivalence as the main theories. This research is qualitative research. From the analysis, it can be concluded that Dracula by Bram Stoker implicitly contains the issue of the East and the West by representing Eastern and Western Europe. The Eastern Europe representations are exotic landscape, tradition and superstition, and lustful. The Western Europe representations are the technology and rationality, and protagonist characters. The narrative of Dracula is also the representation of the West domination over the East through the monolith stigmatization. It reflects the strength of the West as well as the flaw of the West in taking information about the East. As the result the text remains ambivalence. Keywords: Ambivalence, East, Poscolonialism, Representation, West

Abstract

It is true that film as medium can represent a lot significant values in society, one of them is tolerance. It is crucial to discuss tolerance because societies have become more diverse. Therefore, exploring tolerance on films can be fascinating and useful. By using American superhero films (Fantastic 4 (2005), Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007), and Black Panther (2018) to depict how tolerance is represented, this study offers to enhance the understanding of tolerance which has always been one of important values to have. By applying Hall’s theory of representation, this study exposes two essential points: tolerance must be conceptualized by incorporating mutualism, understanding, and peace; and tolerance shown on American superhero movies should incorporate the portrayal of race and gender.

Abstract

The popularity of Wonder Woman (2017) movie worldwide is not only reached the western lands but also the eastern countries, including Indonesia. Wonder Woman offers western post-feminist idea which can bring various responses to the audiences in Indonesia. By using descriptive qualitative approach, this research explores how the young audiences in Indonesia take pleasure and make meaning to the element of feminism in the movie. This research finds that Gal Gadot’s Diana performance in the movie offers special spectacle to the audience through her feminine qualities, such as beautiful face, ideal female body, and gentle character, despite being a powerful female hero who also has the quality of courage, strong determination, athleticism, and skill in fighting. The duality of Diana’s character, the femininity and masculinity, is also noted by the audiences as one of the most notably signs which presented feminism in the movie. Although most of the audiences are Muslim and embrace eastern culture, they tend to be more open to the feminist signs in the movie, as they have often been familiarized themselves with western values by frequently watching Hollywood movies.
