Abstract

 This research is conducted to analyze the use of reduction technique on interrogative sentences in the movie subtitle of National Treasure 2: Book of Secret. The objectives of this research are (1) to find out the types of reduction technique in translating interrogative sentences in the movie subtitle of National Treasure 2: Book of Secret: (2) to find out the accuracy and acceptability of the interrogative sentences that are translated using reduction technique in the movie subtitle of National Treasure 2: Book of Secret as a result of the reduction technique application.This research is a descriptive qualitative research. The data consist of interrogative sentences with reduction technique that are found in the movie subtitle National Treasure 2: Book of Secret and the statement from the informants about the quality of the translation. The sampling techniques are total sampling and a purposive sampling technique.The result of this study shows that there are 62 data (52.54%) accurate, 51 data (43.22%) less accurate, and five data (4.23%) inaccurate. The current study also shows that there are 111 data (94.06%) classified into acceptable translations and seven (5.93%) classified into less acceptable translations. Keywords: reduction, reduction techniques, translation quality.

Abstract

Speaking skills play a vital role in the tourism industry, particularly in community-based destinations where local residents interact directly with visitors. This study explores the development of speaking competence among tourism actors in a rural tourism village in Klaten Regency, Central Java. It aims to identify language needs, analyze challenges in English oral communication, and recommend pedagogical strategies for English for Tourism (EfT) instruction. The findings, derived from observation, interviews, and document analysis, indicate that limited vocabulary, lack of confidence, and insufficient exposure to authentic communicative practice hinder local guides and hosts in delivering quality tourist experiences. The study highlights the effectiveness of task-based learning, role-play, and digital storytelling as contextually relevant approaches to enhance speaking competence in tourism education and community training programs.

Abstract

This research attempts to highlight the issue of microaggressions that occurs in American ethnic minority groups, particularly among Indian-American children featured in the children's novel American as Paneer Pie. Published in 2020, this novel is written by an Indian-American writer named Supriya Kelkar. American as Paneer Pie tells about the story of Lekha, an Indian-American girl who faces racial microaggressions at school. This research identifies the acts of racial microaggressions that occur to the character Lekha in the novel American as Paneer Pie. As a literary analysis, this research uses intrinsic approaches by Pickering and Hoeper as the intrinsic analysis and the theory of microaggressions by DeraldWing Sue as the extrinsic analysis to reveal the problems. The research findings indicate that there are found some acts of racial microaggressions faced by Lekha as an Indian American girl such as mispronouncing her Indian name, stereotyping her Indian physical appearance and lifestyle, and marginalizing her as the minority in the class. These racial microaggressions finally influence her life to change herself to voice her right as the American.

Abstract

This study analyzes politeness strategies in directive speech acts performed by the main characters in The Amazing World of Gumball Season 2. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the data consist of directive utterances from two main characters, supported by document analysis and informant input. The research is grounded in Brown and Levinson’s (1987) politeness theory, Searle’s (1979) classification of directives, Molina and Albir’s (2002) translation techniques, and Nababan et al.’s (2012) model of translation quality assessment. The findings reveal three types of politeness strategies: bald on record (46.23%), positive politeness (30.19%), and negative politeness (23.58%), with no instances of off-record strategies. Thirteen shifts in politeness strategies were identified due to translation techniques, with reduction being the most influential. Despite these shifts, the overall translation quality remained accurate and acceptable, aligning with the cartoon’s humorous and friendly tone.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the translation strategies to translate the astronautic registers as well as the acceptability aspect of the translation. The data comprise 74 astronautic registers in the source text and translated version of The Martian novel. A questionnaire with inputs from the respondents is also put into consideration. The results show that 6 translation strategies consist of translation by a more general word (12%), translation by a more neutral or less expressive word (22%), translation by loan word and loan word plus explanation (17%), translation by paraphrase using related words (31%), translation by paraphrase using unrelated words (15%), translation by omission (3%). This implied most of the registers actually has a similar equivalent in the TL, but the form has to be modified in the TL to capture the main message. Furthermore, in terms of acceptability, 58% data are acceptable, 35% data are less acceptable, and 7% data are unacceptable. It indicates there are still a high number of translations that fail to capture the intended meaning of the registers, bear no nuance as a technical term, and sound unnatural in the TL.

Abstract

This article explores how subcultural resistance is represented in two of t.A.T.u.’s most iconic music videos, Not Gonna Get Us and All the Things She Said. Using a semiotic approach, the study analyzes visual codes, mise-en-scène, and lyrical structures to uncover how these elements express rebellion and emotional urgency within the socio-political context of early 2000s Russia. Visual cues such as fences, surveillance imagery, and enclosed spaces are recontextualized to symbolize control, escape, and resistance. The lyrics act as recurring affirmations of defiance, reinforcing a refusal to conform. The study highlights how movement, spatial dynamics, and contrasting aesthetics construct narratives of struggle against dominant ideologies, particularly around gender and identity. By foregrounding emotional intensity and intimate bonds, the videos create alternative meanings that challenge mainstream interpretations of love. This research reveals how popular media can subvert traditional norms through layered signs, offering space for dissent within familiar cultural formats.

Abstract

This research analyzed the directive illocutionary acts, translation strategies, and their acceptability in Alyssa’s utterances in The End of the F***ing World Season 1. Using Searle’s (1969) directive illocutionary act theory, Gottlieb’s (1992) translation strategies, and Nababan et al.’s (2012) acceptability assessment, this qualitative study collected data through questionnaires with rater feedback. The findings identified 59 directive acts, with commanding (33) as the most frequent, followed by asking (14), suggesting (9), inviting (2), and prohibiting (1). The most used subtitling strategies were transfer (31), condensation (10), and paraphrase (9), ensuring fidelity and fluency. Acceptability results showed 57 instances as acceptable and only 2 as less acceptable. The predominance of transfer, condensation, and paraphrase confirmed their effectiveness in maintaining Alyssa’s character traits and enhancing subtitle quality.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to examine how women characters are depicted in Saumya Dave's novel, Well-Behaved Indian Women, using four models of Gynocriticism proposed by Elaine Showalter. The research employed a descriptive qualitative methodology, relying on data in the form of descriptions and dialogues from the novel. The data gathered through reading the novel and relevant references, was analyzed by organizing, managing, and interpreting it using the chosen theoretical framework. The findings revealed that Dave's novel incorporates the four models of Gynocriticism, namely women's writing and woman's body, women's writing and women's language, women's writing and woman's psyche, and women's writing and women's culture, in its portrayal of the women characters.

Abstract

Social interaction also requires good communication between the speaker and the listener. In everyday life, communication can lead to misunderstandings if the speaker and listener are unable to maintain a good and polite attitude. This phenomenon doses not only occur in everyday life but also in narrative forms. In building good communication, politeness is one of the crucial elements. This study discusses politeness strategies found in The Princess Switch movie using Brown and Levinson's theory. This study is a qualitative descriptive study based on four stages of analysis, namely domain analysis, componential analysis, taxonomy analysis, and cultural theme analysis. This study uses a pragmatic approach. This study identifies the use of politeness strategies, namely bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off record. Additionally, the use of politeness strategies is also based on social context, namely power and social distance. Abstract

Grammarly serves as an online grammar checker that allows users to identify and rectify errors in grammar, pronunciation, punctuation, and plagiarism. This study aims to explore students' perceptions regarding the use of Grammarly as a writing assistant in essay classes. Employing a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through questionnaires and structured interviews. The participants were English major students at Universitas PGRI Jombang enrolled in essay writing classes, with 23 students responding to the questionnaires and 4 participating in interviews. The findings indicate a positive perception among students towards Grammarly as a helpful tool for writing English essays. They appreciate its user-friendly interface, helpful advice, clear explanations, accurate grammar checks, and prompt corrections. Moreover, they find it beneficial for enhancing writing skills and boosting self-confidence, particularly in essay writing. The study also highlights Grammarly's role in facilitating learning about English grammar rules. Despite utilizing only the free version, nearly all students highly recommend Grammarly for supporting English students in essay writing. They value its straightforward feedback, which aids in understanding complex grammar issues and enables them to refine their writing while reducing common errors. In conclusion, students consider Grammarly a valuable tool for enhancing their essay writing skills. Not only does it assist in correcting grammatical errors, but it also serves as an educational resource that enriches students' understanding of English grammar. Therefore, integrating Grammarly into the essay writing curriculum can greatly benefit English students, providing them with an accessible and effective resource to improve their writing proficiency.
