Abstract

This study investigates the impact of the implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and the influence of the workplace's quality on workers performance using a quantitative approach. In today's competitive business landscape, optimizing employee performance is crucial, and this research aims to identify key factors contributing to performance enhancement. A structured survey was administered to employees across various sectors, and the data were analysed using statistical methods to determine the relationships between the variables. The findings reveal a significant positive correlation between the rigorous implementation of SOPs and improved worker productivity. Furthermore, the standard of the workplace was found to play a critical role in moderating this relationship, suggesting that a supportive and well-maintained work environment enhances the effectiveness of SOPs. The study provides empirical evidence that both SOPs and work environment quality are integral to boosting employee performance. These results underscore the importance of well-defined procedures and a conducive work environment in organizational strategies aimed at improving workforce productivity. Recommendations for managers include ensuring consistent application of SOPs and investing in creating a positive work environment to foster better performance outcomes.

Abstract

Childhood biological knowledge has been shown to be an important variable that affects children’s interest and understanding in biology later in life. However, in teaching and learning, most Nigerian teachers tend not associate students’ interest and understanding in biology to their childhood experiences. Hence, this study investigated childhood biological knowledge as correlate of secondary school students’ interest in biology. Two research questions and two hypotheses guided the study. The study was a correlational study and was conducted in Anambra State, Nigeria. The population of the study comprised 13, 109 biology students (5, 988 males and 7, 121 females) in 161 government owned co-educational schools, across six education zones in the State. The instruments for data collection were a researcher made Childhood Biological Knowledge Scale (CBKS) to measure childhood biological knowledge and Biology Interest Questionnaire (BIQ) to measure interest. Data analyzed using Pearson product moment correlation coefficient (Pearson r) showed that childhood biological knowledge had a low positive correlation with students' interest in biology r = 24 and a low positive correlation of r= 32 for female and r= 05 for male. Thus, students’ childhood biological knowledge increases their interest in biology over time not withstanding their gender. The study recommended among others that Biology teachers should be knowledgeable about their students' childhood biological knowledge to help them correct misconceptions that could lead to poor achievement.

Abstract

Termination abrogates or brings to an end a valid contract of employment. The act could be in form of notice of intention to bring the agreement between the parties to an end by employer or employee or it could manifest in the form of payment of salary in advance, i.e. in lieu of notice. Dismissal is instant removal from office without notice. Any employer need not adduce reason or motive for terminating the appointment of the employee with notice, but it is mandatory for the said employer to do so where he seeks to dismiss an employee. Dismissal must be based on cogent and compelling grounds as it carries with it the elements of shame, disgrace and odium as well as loss of earnings like wages and other benefits e.g. pension and gratuity. It is an affront to human dignity when one reads such dicta as ‘reinstatement will not be order even if the employee’s right to fair hearing is breached, ‘no employee can be imposed on an unwilling employer even where the employer’s behavior or motive for getting rid of the employee is wrongful, unjustifiable, unfounded or repulsive. Wrongful termination of employment, no matter how grievous can only result in damages. Nigerian employees need to be protected from the victimization, vindictiveness, nepotism and narrow-mindedness of the employers. Justice requires that punishment should be commensurate with the degree of wrongdoing.
