Abstract

Abstract

Examination malpractice is a persistent phenomenon that undermines the integrity of the educational system and labor market in Nigeria, representing a form of market failure in signaling human capital quality. This phenomenological qualitative study analyzes the lived experiences of nine quality assurance leaders responsible for monitoring the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) in Northwestern Nigeria. Through in-depth interviews and thematic analysis, the study identifies malpractice mechanisms as opportunistic behaviors driven by economic incentives and social pressures, involving both internal and external agents within a principal-agent problem framework. Findings suggest that malpractice represents rent-seeking behavior triggered by the overemphasis on certificates as labor market signals (signaling theory), exacerbated by infrastructural deficiencies that increase compliance costs. The study recommends policy interventions focused on restructuring incentive systems through stronger legal enforcement, leveraging technology to reduce information asymmetries in supervision, and shifting social focus from formal credentials to actual competencies to improve the efficiency of education and labor markets

Abstract

This interpretive qualitative case study analyzes the economic implications of developing scientific registers in African indigenous languages—specifically IsiNdebele—for natural science education. Data were collected through interviews and diary notes from stakeholders. The findings reveal that IsiNdebele remains economically underdeveloped due to the lack of scientific terminology, which limits its potential as a tool for human capital development. Stakeholders expressed divergent perceptions regarding the economic value of using a scientific register in IsiNdebele for teaching natural sciences. Some supported its use, seeing potential benefits in enhancing learning outcomes and educational efficiency through mother-tongue instruction. However, despite evidence of pedagogical benefits, many stakeholders still reject the use of a scientific register in IsiNdebele, preferring English instead. This preference is rooted in the perception of English as a global language of power and economic opportunity, considered essential for economic mobility and labor market access. Such perceptions significantly affect the economic viability of indigenous languages and hinder investments in their development. It is recommended that targeted investments be made to develop scientific registers in indigenous languages. This could shift stakeholder perceptions regarding the economic value of African languages as mediums of instruction and learning, thereby improving the economic participation of their speakers.

Abstract

This study explores the dynamics of organizational culture and management practices within a Japanese university from the perspective of international faculty. Employing a qualitative approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted with non-tenured international faculty members to understand their experiences within the context of leadership and diversity management. The findings indicate that the dominant top-down management approach is less effective in promoting inclusivity and the integration of international faculty. The hierarchical organizational culture and a tendency towards uncertainty avoidance emerge as primary obstacles to cross-cultural adaptation and collaboration. This study recommends the implementation of inclusive leadership practices and the development of intercultural competencies to foster a more open and diversity-supportive organizational culture

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the peer tutoring strategy in enhancing the academic performance of high school students in Statistics and Probability. Employing a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach, this study analyzes relevant scholarly publications over the past decade. The review findings indicate that the implementation of peer tutoring consistently yields positive impacts on student academic achievement, particularly in quantitative learning contexts. From an educational economics perspective, this strategy is considered efficient as it optimizes internal school resources without necessitating significant additional costs. Peer tutoring also contributes to increased learning productivity and a reduction in failure rates. Therefore, peer tutoring is recommended as a viable alternative teaching method suitable for widespread implementation in the context of economics and mathematics education.
