Abstract

Community ills such as beggars on the waterfront (seaside) in Padang are a social issue that requires special attention.  This research aims to determine the factors that cause the presence of beggars on Padang beaches, the factors that cause beggars to quit their profession, the life patterns of beggars on Padang beaches, and the impact that beggars have on visitors to Padang beaches.  The research method used is a qualitative approach using observation, interview and documentation study techniques.  The socio-economic impact that arises is the emergence of social inequality, decreased community productivity, and an increase in the government's burden in dealing with these social problems.  Comprehensive efforts are needed from the government and community to overcome the phenomenon of begging on the Padang seafront, such as empowering the community's economy, increasing access to education and skills training, as well as strict law enforcement.

Abstract

Social media is now not only a mass communication tool but also a means of massively and rapidly shaping people's consumption patterns. In Padang City, the increase in social media use has triggered significant changes in consumer behavior, particularly among the younger generation. The emerging issues are not only related to impulsive consumption but also to individuals' increasing reliance on social media as a primary reference in determining consumption needs. This phenomenon raises concerns about the blurring of the line between real needs and digitally constructed desires. Using a descriptive quantitative approach, the data in this study were obtained through literature review and interviews with 30 respondents aged 18–40 who actively use social media for at least 2 hours per day. The results indicate that platforms such as Instagram and TikTok play a significant role in influencing purchasing decisions, particularly through promotional content and viral trends. These findings confirm that social media is a crucial actor in shaping urban consumer culture. Therefore, strengthening digital literacy and education on healthy consumption are needed to enable the public to respond wisely to social media exposure. Keywords: digital consumption, mass communication, social media, consumer behavior, visual trends

Abstract

This study explores the dynamics of intercultural communication between migrant students and the local community in Padang, West Sumatra. The growing presence of students from various regions has led to increasingly complex cultural interactions. Employing a qualitative method with a case study approach, data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation involving both migrant students and local community members. The findings reveal that intercultural interactions are dynamic but marked by several key challenges, including language barriers, social stereotypes, and differences in cultural values. These challenges can hinder the process of adaptation and social integration for students in their new environment. Nevertheless, adaptation occurs through various strategies such as learning the local language, participating in community activities, and building interpersonal relationships through informal approaches. This study emphasizes the importance of intercultural communication competence as a crucial factor in fostering harmonious social integration within multicultural settings. The ability to understand cultural differences and engage in empathetic communication plays a vital role in minimizing misunderstandings and creating inclusive spaces for interaction. These insights are relevant not only for educational and social policy development but also contribute to the broader discourse on intercultural communication within the diverse sociocultural context of Indonesia

Abstract

The development of digital technology and algorithms used by social media platforms has transformed the patterns of information consumption in society. The phenomenon of the filter bubble, where users are exposed only to information that aligns with their preferences and beliefs, has narrowed the space for public discourse. This study aims to explore the impact of algorithms on mass communication and its implications for information consumption patterns. The research utilizes a literature review with a descriptive qualitative approach, analyzing various articles and studies related to the influence of algorithms and the filter bubble on media interactions and audiences. The findings reveal that algorithms play a significant role in directing and limiting the types of information users are exposed to. This reinforces the formation of echo chambers, where individuals are more likely to receive information that confirms their existing beliefs, reducing the diversity of perspectives. The study also finds that this phenomenon may exacerbate social polarization, shrink the space for constructive dialogue, and influence political and social behavior. As a result, mass communication in the digital era faces new challenges in creating an inclusive and open public space. This research is expected to provide insights for the development of media policies and digital literacy to address the evolving landscape of mass communication in the future.
