Abstract

One of the essential underlying premises that need to be kept in mind to maintain Indonesian EFL educators’ professionalism is with the support of the robust establishment of professional identity. Previously-reviewed studies conducted in Indonesian EFL teaching-learning contexts held a strong contention that a higher level of professional identity construction would enable language teachers to show their best educational endeavour to fully fulfill the educational demands. This current small-scale qualitative study was initiated with the support of a library analysis approach to generate more comprehensible and applicable research results. To attain this major study objective, the researcher conducted an in-depth thematic analysis of 20 previously-conducted Indonesian EFL teachers’ professional identity construction studies to yield more orderly research outcomes. Two major-specific factors are believed to cultivate Indonesian EFL educators’ professional identity construction namely: (1) viable motivation to advance an entire educational quality and (2) rigorous external support emanating from educational stakeholders. To this end, it can be fairly inferred that Indonesian EFL educators can fully possess a higher degree of professional identity in an occasion where both internal motivation and mutual external support are embedded within their professional lives.

Abstract

This study aimed to explore challenges in learning grammar in an Intermediate Grammar class during COVID-19 era. The participants were English as a Foreign Language students from 2019 until 2021 who failed in Intermediate Grammar class or received C-E as the final score of this class during COVID-19. Close-ended questionnaire and interview were used as the instruments to collect the data in May and June 2022. The questionnaire asked the participants to choose responses to the statements. In the interview, the researcher involved six participants from the survey to clarify and dig in their responses using the same questions on the questionnaire. The results of this study would seem to indicate that the students failed in learning grammar class during the COVID-19 era because the grammar materials were too difficult to understand, loud noises made them unable to study peacefully when joining the online class from home. Their online grammar class was boring, and students experienced a bad internet connection. In addition, teachers and friends seemed to take an essential role in enhancing students’ grammar. At the end, this study proposed some explicit learning strategies to improve learners’ learning in an online grammar class.

Abstract

The primary goal of this research was to examine metaphors in selected Blackpink song lyrics. The study's objectives are to identify the types of metaphors syntactically based on Abdul Wahab (1986) and to analyse the metaphorical meanings of selected Blackpink song lyrics using Lakoff and Johnson's source and target (1980). A descriptive-qualitative approach is used in this study. The metaphors used in Blackpink's song lyrics were the data. The researcher applies Abdul Wahab's theory of syntactical types of metaphor to the identified data and analyses it using Lakoff and Johnson's concept of source and target in metaphor. Subjective nominative metaphor, objective nominative metaphor, predicative metaphor, and sentence metaphor were the four types of metaphor used in five selected Blackpink song lyrics. The writer finds that the phrase metaphor is the type of metaphor most commonly used in Blackpink's songs, followed by the objective metaphor of the predicative metaphor and subjective metaphor. Each of the types of metaphors collected in the following study contains abstract terms with real meanings.

The multiple-choice test was conducted after each meeting. The results showed that 63,33 % of the students could improve their achievement in the second meeting. It means that the use of WhatsApp in teaching vocabulary can improve students' achievement. Referring to the writer's experience in conducting action research, the writer offers a suggestion. It is suggested that English teachers can use WhatsApp as an alternative application to improve students' vocabulary achievement.
