Abstract

English is one of the existing languages in this world. Speaking is one of the important skills in English. A priority for many second language or foreign language learners is the mastery of speaking. Speaking is one of the indicators that someone understands English. As a foreign language, English tends to be difficult to be learnt by foreign language learners. The researcher aimed to find out if the use of inquiry-based learning method can improve the students’ speaking skill at the tenth-grade students of vocational high school. This research used classroom action research (CAR). The cycles of this research were planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The method used in collecting the data was a test. The research result of students’ pre test was 66.6. Meanwhile the students’ post test result was 72.2. In conclusion inquiry based learning method improved speaking skill at the tenth grade students of vocational high school.

Abstract

The contract between teacher and student or what is often called as teacher-student agreement is one of the class management in applying student discipline. Good class management, especially in student discipline, is considered important in creating a conducive learning atmosphere. In conventional learning, teacher and student contracts regarding student discipline are related to how students' attitudes in participating in learning, such as students not being allowed to go around the class while learning is taking place, students are not allowed to be busy with other things besides those related to learning and others. At this time, when online learning or distance learning is applied, of course this contract is also undergoing changes. There is a disciplinary agreement between the teacher and students that adapts to distance learning conditions. This study aims to identify the learning discipline contract between students and teachers in distance learning. Questionnaires and interviews were used to collect data. The data were analysed descriptively to get a description of the agreement between teachers and students in online learning and the type of agreement that commonly used. The findings show that the most widely regulation is related to student’s obedience in following teacher’s instruction in online class. This study also revealed that learning contract is an effective way to create a successful online learning based on teacher’s perspectives.

Abstract

Teaching and learning English method recently have become very important issue to discuss as it is seen to not be effective anymore. This is proven by the majority of students who cannot achieve the learning target even when they learn English for many years. English Camp serves as a method that gives the teacher and the student a new learning atmosphere in which it can be done either inside or outside the classroom. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach where the data were collected through observation, interview, and documentation. The date then was analyzed by using triangulation consisting the process of; data condensation, the display of the data, conclusion verification. The result of this research suggested that English Camp is perceived as an effective atmosphere for English learners and teachers in achieving the learning objective. It can improve students speaking performance for speaking is all about forming habits when this is the focus of the entire learning activities.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the strategies used by the teachers and the inhibiting factors that can influence the development of HOTS in Reading Class. It applied qualitative approach with case study research design. The subject of the research were two English teachers of Senior High School. The techniques of collecting the data were used observation and interview. The data were analyzed using the qualitative method there are data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusions. The finding of the research shows that there were 5 types of teaching strategies, including informing learning objectives, divergent questions, group discussion, giving feedback and giving motivation. The most dominant strategy used by the teacher was divergent question. Meanwhile, the learning objective and group discussion was the least prominent, with only 3 data. Then, five inhibiting process such as time, pupil learning ability, pupil’s mastery, planning domain, and class environment can influence the development of HOTS.

Abstract

Teaching Arabic by using books is pretty much a routines done by teachers and students in an institute or school. This study focuses on how to analyze the book Lessons of the Arabic Language on the Up-to-date method of teaching from the cultural, social, psychological, linguistic, and educational aspects and to identify the shortcomings and advantages of the teaching of Arabic by using books. This study employed qualitative descriptive research. The data were collected through observation and document analysis. The results of this study indicate that in terms of preparing the textbooks, one must consider such aspects as; the cultural, social, psychological, linguistic, and educational aspects. Moreover, even though it has some disadvantages, it does not diminish the quality of the book used in which it is evidenced on how popular method is implemented.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the form of speech acts and the meaning of conversational implicatures in the book Disney Princess (al-ba??u 'an al-kanzi) by Jacqueline A. Ball as a corpus of data. The data of this study used a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. The results of the research in the book show that there are three forms of speech and conversational implicatures, namely, locutionary forms, illocutions, and perlocutions. The classification of conversational implicatures with twelve locutionary speech forms, namely: seven declarative sentences, one imperative sentence, and four interrogative sentences. The 35 illocutionary forms found were a) assertive with the function of stating four utterances, proposing one utterance, complaining in one utterance, and expressing an opinion in one utterance; b) the directive with the function of commanding is two utterances, asking for four utterances, and giving advice in two utterances; c) commissive with the function of promising two utterances, and offering one utterance; d) expressive with the function of thanking ten utterances, criticizing five utterances, and praising two utterances. Meanwhile, the perlocutionary forms found were five utterances with two persuading effects, one effect of making the hearer to do something, one effect of making the hearer to think, and one effect of attracting attention.
