Abstract

This study examines the representation of racial harassment in the film "12 Years a Slave." The research aims to: (1) describe the forms of racial harassment experienced in the film, and (2) analyze the reasons behind these experiences. Utilizing a descriptive qualitative method, the study draws on both primary and secondary data sources. The primary data includes the film's script and the film itself, while secondary sources comprise journal articles, books, and previous research. Data collection was conducted through note-taking, focusing on instances of racial harassment depicted in the film. The analysis employs the theoretical framework of Chen & Kleiner (1999). The findings reveal three distinct forms of racial harassment from a total of 13 instances identified: physical attacks, verbal abuse, and intimidation based on race or color. Furthermore, the research identifies that the historical context of racism in America and the legal requirement for Black individuals to possess documentation proving their freedom contribute to these experiences of racial harassment. The study concludes by discussing the implications of these findings in understanding racial harassment as portrayed in "12 Years a Slave," highlighting the significance of the Chen & Kleiner framework in analyzing such representations.

Abstract

Culture shock is a condition where individuals feel shocked, confused, anxious, and restless when moving from their home area to a culturally distinct environment. This phenomenon can cause challenges in intercultural communication. This study explores the factors and impacts of culture shock experienced by students from Maluku studying in Makassar. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the study draws on primary and secondary data from five student informants through interviews, observations, and documentation. Key findings reveal that language, food, and environmental factors contribute to culture shock, while impacts are categorized into positive (e.g., adaptation, cultural learning) and negative (e.g., anxiety, loss of appetite) outcomes. These findings imply that students need better preparation for transitioning into new cultural contexts.

Abstract

This study explores the use of figurative language in selected songs by Taylor Swift to understand its prevalence and impact. The primary objectives are to identify the types of figurative language used and determine the most dominant form. Employing a qualitative approach, this research analyzes five songs: "Bad Blood," "Blank Space," "Look What You Made Me Do," "End Game," and "You Belong With Me." The study utilizes the theoretical framework of Kennedy and Gioia to categorize figurative language into metaphors, similes, hyperboles, repetitions, symbols, and personifications. Findings reveal that metaphors are the most dominant, accounting for 38% of the figurative language, followed by hyperboles (24%) and repetitions (16%). The results underscore the role of figurative language in enriching song lyrics, creating depth, and enhancing listener engagement. These insights provide a foundation for further exploration of figurative language in contemporary music and its relevance to literary studies.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze and interpret the types of figurative language used in the poem My Mistress' Eyes Are Nothing Like the Sun. The study addresses the research problem of identifying dominant figurative language types and their interpretive methods, focusing on their contribution to understanding the poem’s meaning. Using Knickerbocker and Renninger's (1963) theory to classify figurative language types and Charles W. Kreidler's (1998) framework for interpreting language, the study applied qualitative content analysis. The findings reveal five types of figurative language in the poem: simile, hyperbole, metaphor, irony, and allusion. Among these, simile, hyperbole, irony, and allusion each appeared in two lines (14%), while metaphor was the least frequent, appearing in one line (8%). Notably, 36% of the poem contains literal language without figurative expressions. Regarding interpretive methods, connotation was the most frequently used (27%), followed by reference and denotation (21% each). Less common methods include lexical grammatical meanings (16%), morphemes (5%), homonymy and polysemy (5%), and lexical ambiguity (5%). This study highlights the predominance of similes and connotations in shaping the poem's meaning, contributing to a nuanced appreciation of its moral and literary value. The findings underscore the utility of combining linguistic and literary approaches to deepen the analysis of figurative language in poetry, offering valuable insights for literary studies and moral value analysis in literature.
