Abstract

This study aimed to analyze how social power was depicted in the novel This Earth of Mankind (1996) translated by Max Lane and how the relationship among characters represents social power by using French and Raven's theory (1959) of social power. This research used descriptive-qualitative. This study focused on the dialogues among characters. The results of this study showed that 2 data points on the reward power, 4 data points on the coercive power, 18 data points on the legitimate power, 14 data points on the referent power, and 13 data points on the expert power. In representing social power, the characters in the novel describe various dynamics of social power. The representation of social power shows that the relationship among characters affects the dynamics of social class and social interaction among characters. Additionally, economic power highlights the character's dependence on material resources, which are often tools of control and domination. The social power did not only influence individuals separately but also shapes social structures and hierarchies in the novel, reflecting complex and dynamic social realities.

Abstract

This research aims to; analyze the types of English grammatical errors in advertisements on social media Instagram and what is the meaning of grammatical errors in advertisements on social media Instagram. This type of research is qualitative research using the Accommodation theory developed by Rod Ellis in 1999 which focuses on grammatical errors that occur in the process of learning a second or foreign language (Second Language Acquisition, SLA). This theory explains how second language learners overcome and correct their errors in grammar through the process of interaction and communication. The object of this research is English advertisements on social media Instagram. This research uses error analysis which is conducted in several stages. Preparation was done by selecting relevant advertisements from advertising accounts, after which the researcher took screenshots of the advertisements. Then, after the screenshots were taken, the data were analysed for identification and then classified into 3 categories namely omission, information error and sequencing error. The results of this research show that there are 3 types of errors that occur namely omission, misinformation, and misordering with a total of 15 data. There are omission 5, misinformation 3, and misordering 6. This research is expected to provide benefits for everyone especially for those who are interested in Applied Linguistics.

Abstract

Given that researchers aim to publish in prestigious journals, understanding the rhetorical organization of such publications is crucial. While this topic has been extensively studied, existing research has yet to explore how authors in reputable journals engage with prior literature. To fill this gap, the present study intends to analyze how research article authors respond to other earlier literature in their research article introductions (RAIs) published in reputable international applied linguistics journals. This study aims to achieve two objectives: to find out to what extent responding to other earlier literature is important in RAIs, and to discover what types of response authors employ in their RAIs. To achieve these goals, this study employed combined descriptive qualitative and quantitative approaches for analyzing 40 RAIs published in Q1 journals as data sets in the present study. Then, a new analytical framework was designed to respond to the above objectives. The results indicated that responding to other earlier literature is obligatory in RAIs published in reputable international applied linguistics journals. In responding to other earlier literature, authors employed three types of response: either extending other earlier studies, modifying other earlier studies, or establishing a new method, idea, or knowledge. This study offers theoretical contributions by expanding the understanding of how research article authors engage with prior literature within their RAIs. Its practical implications include guiding researchers on effectively utilizing prior literature to establish their research agenda when publishing in reputable journals.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the improvement of students' speaking skills by imitating social media influencers (SMI) on TikTok and Instagram through digital storytelling. In addition, this study also aims to find out how the students perceive the imitating technique and how the students create digital storytelling videos. There were 20 students participating in this study selected by purposive and convenience sampling. To accommodate the study's objectives, action research was applied, and a questionnaire adapted from the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) was administered. This study reveals that students experienced a significant improvement in speaking by imitating SMI, proven by t-test data showing 0.000 < 0.05. The study also shows a rise in mean scores from the poor category to the fair category. Additionally, this study illustrates positive perceptions toward this technique, where students find this technique easy to implement and benefit from boosting their speaking skills. Furthermore, this study shows that students demonstrated several activities in creating digital storytelling, such as preparing tools, recording videos, editing footage, and publishing videos.
