Abstract

The research aims to analyze the characters and moral values contained in the film "TheSound of Music" by Robert Wise. Based on the theories of character and moral values, there are four primary points to analyze: 1) There are three kinds of characters that appear in the characters in "The Sound of Music" by Robert Wise based on Russel, those are the Protagonist, the main protagonist played by Maria and the Von Trapp Family and the sisters in the monastery, the Antagonist, played by The Baroness and Herr Zeller, and Foil character played by Rolfe and Franz, 2) There are seven types of moral values that appear in "The Sound of Music" by Robert Wise based on Borba, they are respect, kindness, conscience, self-control, justice, empathy and tolerance.Keywords: content analysis; moral values; movie

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze white supremacy and structural racism in the film "The Shawshank Redemption". The method used is descriptive-qualitative to describe white supremacy and structural racism in the film. Data is obtained, analyzed and explained based on dialogues contained in the film, namely: 1) white supremacy that is analyzed from a) the appearances of the character using a sequence table, and b) visible glorification and invisible glorification using glorification dialogue table, and 2) structural racism, using binary opposition, namely positive and negative characterization of the characters. By the sequence table, the character that is predominant in the film is Andy Dufresne. From the glorification dialogue table, visible glorification gets the highest presentation while invisible glorification gets the lowest presentation. This shows that white supremacy exists in American film. As for structural racism, the negative characterization of the supporting characters is the highest while the negative characterization of the main character is the lowest. This shows that structural racism exists in American film.Key Words: American film; drama; white supremacy; structural racism.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of reading habit and grammar mastery towards the Students descriptive writing, then do research using the survey method. The sample used 90 students with cluster random sampling technique. The results showed that there is a significant influence reading habits and mastery of grammar together on the ability to write descriptive texts English. This is evidenced by the acquisition of the Sig. 0.000 <0.05 and Fh = 18.414. Together. 2) There is a significant effect on the ability of the habit of reading English writing descriptive texts. This is evidenced by the acquisition of the Sig 0,002, <0.05 and th =3,235. 3). Also, there is a significant effect on the ability of mastering grammar writing descriptive texts English. This is evidenced by the acquisition Sig.0,005 value <0.05 and th =2902Keywords: reading habits; grammar mastery; foreign language writing; descriptive text.

Abstract

Abstract: Illocutionary act is an important part in order to understand the speech acts. It is related to the speaker’s intention in the conversation, and it can be seen from the utterances. In contrast, Perlocutionary act is the effect of the utterance which the speaker said to the hearer. This act does not consist of certain things in certain ways, but it is having certain effects. The literary works of concern for this study is The Book of Lost Things novel. The purpose of this paper is to describe the Illocutionary and Perlocutionary acts employed by the characters in the novel. The finding of this study indicates that the characters in The Book of Lost Things employed all types of Illocutionary acts and responding to that using Perlocutionary acts. It can be concluded that the used of Illocutionary and Perlocutionary acts can be found in this novel.Key Words: illocutionary act; perlocutionary act; speech act; the book of lost things.

Abstract

The Objective of this research was to analyze, know and describe the use of simple present verb on descriptive text and the use of adjective on descriptive text made by students of Public Junior High School in Bekasi. The number of population is 612. As the sample the researcher took 60 students from the population. The method used in this study was content analysis method to describe students’ errors consisting 418 erroneous sentences and analyze the data taken from written test. The finding shows that errors are 1). 56,93% or 238 errors occurred in the simple present verb and 2). 43,06% or 180 errors occurred in Adjective. It happened because the students did not really understand and they were not able to use simple present verb and adjective correctly in the sentence.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the characters and moral values contained in the film "Miracle Worker" by William Gibson. Based on the theories of character and moral values collected, four main points are analyzed, they are: 1) How is the character appear in "Miracle Worker" by William Gibson based on the theory put forward by Russel How is moral values that appear in "Miracle Worker" by William Gibson based on the theory put forward by Milhorn. 3) There are three kinds of characters that appear in the characters in "Miracle Worker" by William Gibson based on Russel’s theory, those are the Protagonist, the protagonist played by Kate Keller, Annie Sullivan, Captain Arthur Keller, Mr. Anagnos, and Viney, the Foil, played by Hellen Keller, James Keller, and Aunt Ev, 4) There are six types of moral values that appear in “Miracle Worker" by William Gibson based on Milhorn’s theory, they are: belief, fairness, kind-hearted honesty, responsibility, and tolerance, belief is the most dominant moral values of all moral values that arise.Keywords: character; moral value; moral value; film.

Abstract

This research is aimed at finding the effect of vocabulary mastery and reading interest toward the students’ narrative writing skill. The hypothesis of this study includes: 1). There is a collaborative significant effect of the vocabulary mastery and reading interest toward the students’ narrative writing skill; 2). There is a significant effect of the vocabulary mastery toward the students’ narrative writing skill; and 3). There is a significant effect of the reading interest toward the students’ narrative writing skill. The method of the research is a double regression linear by descriptive survey analysis applying some samples from a number of population and using questionnaire and tests instrument for data collection. The number of the samples is 80 students of grade ten (X) who are students of the State Vocational High School in West Jakarta.

Abstract

This research aims at showing the connection between the characters’ reality and fantasy on identity crisis in Alice through the Looking-Glass novel by Lewis Carroll. Thus, the conducted research was analyzed using qualitative method with the approach of psychoanalytical literary criticism: Psychoanalysis by Freud as well as the theory of Psychosocial Development by Erikson to seek the identity crisis of the character Alice. As the conclusion of the research; 1) Alice’s ‘ego’ cannot manage her ‘id’ which is difficult to be gratified in reality that triggers Alice overreact her defense mechanisms; 2) Alice’s fantasy works as a defense mechanism which is caused by her unfulfilled wishes in reality; 3) It is revealed that Alice experiences identity crisis at the phase of autonomy versus doubt and shame as well as initiative versus guilt which influences her behaviors, resulting Childhood Onset schizophrenic (COS) personality disorder.Keywords: identity crisis; psychoanalysis; interpretation of dreams; personality disorder; schizophrenia

Abstract

Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh penguasaan kosakata dan minat baca terhadap kemampuan memahami teks recount. Hipotesis penelitian yang diuji meliputi: 1) Pengaruh Penguasaan Kosakata terhadap Kemampuan Memahami Teks Recount, 2) Pengaruh Minat Baca terhadap Kemampuan Memahami Teks Recount, 3) Pengaruh Penguasaan Kosakata dan Minat Baca secara bersama-sama terhadap Kemampuan Memahami Teks Recount. Penelitian dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode survei dengan jumlah sampel 66 (enampuluh enam) siswa SMP Negeri di Kabupaten Indramayu.. Instrument yang digunakan adalah angket dan hasil tes bahasa Inggris bentuk pilihan ganda dengan pilihan 20 soal penguasaan kosakata dan 20 soal mengenai teks recount. Data diolah dengan menggunakan bantuan SPSS 20 dan dianalisis dengan menggunakan analisis regresi. Berdasarkan hasil pengujian hipotesis, diperoleh kesimpulan: 1) Pengaruh Penguasaan Kosakata berpengaruh langsung terhadap Kemampuan Memahami Teks Recount, 2) Penguasaan Minat Baca berpengaruh langsung terhadap Kemampuan Memahami Teks Recount, 3) Pengaruh  Penguasaan Kosakata dan Minat Baca secara bersama-sama berpangaruh langsung terhadap Kemampuan Memahami Teks recount.             Kata kunci: Penguasaan kosakata, minat baca, teks recount.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to know 1) Types of moral aspects contained. 2) The dominant moral aspect is found. 3) Correlation of morality aspects with a sociological approach to literature. The research method used to analyze this film is a qualitative method that contains two elements, namely intrinsic elements in characters and characterizations as in morals through the approach of literary sociology. Based on the results of the study it can be concluded that 1) There are 7 moral aspects found in the “Ferdinand” film based on Michelle Borba's theory, namely Empathy, Conscience, Self-Control, Respect, Kindness, Tolerance, Justice. 2) The dominant moral aspects found were kindness (11 data), empathy (6 data), conscience (5 data), and self control (5 data). 3) the correlation of morality aspects with the approach of literary sociology, both of which highlight the conditions and social problems that are taking place in social life.
