Anxiety contribution on students’ text comprehension in various test types Supeno Supeno; Imam Suseno

This study aims to understand how anxiety as a variable contributes to affect the ability in comprehending English texts evaluated on students’ performance on various test types, namely 1) multiple-choice tests (MC), 2) fill-in-the-blank tests (FTB), and 3) true/false tests (TF). This research used ex post facto method, with responses collected from eleventh grade high school students in Jakarta. Respondents worked on tests with similar material, although at different times. Students’ anxiety was measured based on behavioral and cognitive characteristics listed on the questionnaire given to respondents along with the English test. The results pointed out that there was indeed a difference ofstudents’ anxiety levels in working on the various English text comprehension tests given. The results of the English text comprehension tests were generally influenced by the anxiety variable, although the effect was found to be small. Teachers are recommended to apply multiple variations of ability evaluation in measuring the students’ English text comprehension by using multiple test modes.

ABSTRACT This study aims to develop a model of reading strategies of English language learning which is expected to further enhance students’ cognitive abilities in English. The model reading strategies serve as a strategy to read the English subtitles via bottom-up, top-down and mixed strategies that are capable of triggering the students' critical thinking and have been integrated with development ideas from experts and linguists. The study employed a cluster random sampling of 30 schools and 900 students for the standardization of the model reading strategies as a new model that best enhance the cognitive power of English language learning. The method used was Research and Development, through seven steps in the research cycles. The subjects were high school students in the class tenth in Special Capital Region of Jakarta. The steps to reading development strategy that are able to improve the cognitive of students are 6 steps consisting of: overall understanding, understanding on contextual meaning, assumption of contextual meaning, look for meaning in contextual output, searching for further meaning, and returning to the main idea of our thinking. ABSTRAK Penelitian ini bertujuan mengembangkan model pembelajaran bahasa Inggris yakni reading strategies, yang diharapkan dapat meningkatkan daya kognitif bahasa Inggris siswa. Permodelan reading strategies sebagai strategi untuk membaca teks bahasa Inggris melalui strategi bottom-up, top-down dan mixed yang mampu memicu pemikiran kritis siswa dan telah diintegrasikan dengan gagasan pengembangan dari para ahli dan ahli bahasa. Dengan cluster random sampling terpilih sebanyak 30 sekolah dan 900 siswa untuk standarisasi model reading strategies sebagai model baru yang dapat meningkatkan daya kognitif bahasa Inggris siswa. Metode yang digunakan adalah Research and Development, melalui tujuh langkah dalam siklus penelitian. Subjek penelitian adalah siswa SMA di kelas sepuluh di DKI Jakarta. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa reading strategies yang dapat meningkatkan kemampuan kognitif siswa yaitu melalui adalah 6 langkah strategi membaca yaitu: pemahaman teks secara utuh, memahami makna dalam konteks, berpikir dan menduga tentang makna, mencari makna dalam konteks, mencari makna lebih jauh, dan kembali pada pemikiran makna kata. This study aims to understand how anxiety as a variable contributes to affecting the ability to comprehend English texts using the ex post facto method, with eleventh grade high school students in Jakarta as the respondents. Students’ anxiety is measured based on behavioral and cognitive characteristics listed on the questionnaire given to respondents along with the English test. The results show that there is indeed a difference in anxiety levels on students in working on the various English text comprehension tests given. The results of the English text comprehension tests are generally influenced by the anxiety variable, although the effect is found to be small. Teachers are recommended to use multiple teaching methods, and to teach and motivate the students to read more. Teachers are also recommended to apply multiple variations of ability evaluation in measuring the students’ English text comprehension by using multiple test modes.

Pengaruh Motivasi, Disiplin Kerja dan Gaya Kepemimpinan Kepala Sekolah terhadap Kinerja Guru Bahasa Inggris SMP DKI Jakarta Imam Suseno; Supeno Supeno; Ira Miranti

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kinerja satuan pendidik yang kemudian dilihat pengaruhnya dari faktor motivasi, disiplin dan gaya kepemimpinan pimpinan lembaga pendidikan tersebut. Teropong utama tertuju pada kinerja guru bahasa Inggris Sekolah Menengah Pertama Jakarta. Sampel diperoleh melalui teknik cluster random sampling. Data kuantitatif dikumpulkan melalui kegiatan survei, melalui instrumen penelitian berupa angket dan wawancara yang bersifat terstruktur. Analisis data berupa regresi ganda. Hasil penelitian menyimpulkan bahwa (1) terdapat pengaruh motivasi terhadap kinerja guru bahasa Inggris, (2) terdapat pengaruh disiplin kerja terhadap kinerja guru bahasa Inggris, (3) terdapat pengaruh gaya kepemimpinan kepala sekolah terhadap kinerja guru bahasa Inggris, dan (4) terdapat pengaruh bersama antara motivasi, disiplin dan gaya kepemimpinan kepala sekolah terhadap kinerja guru bahasa Inggris. Kata Kunci : Performance, motivasi, disiplin, dan leadership style

English Speaking Difficulties Encountered by The Islamic Boarding School Students Daarul Mughni Bogor Supeno Supeno; Imam Suseno; Kokok Purwanto

The research is to find out the students’ speaking difficulties encountered by Islamic Boarding School Daarul Mughni Bogor, Indonesia. The research objective identifies and describes the process result of the students’ observation, questionnaire, and interview related to linguistic factors, non-linguistic factors, and both causes. The subject of this research is the students as about 80 respondents with a descriptive analysis of qualitative research. The research methodology is considered to be appropriately applied for the study of linguistic analysis and a description of the data. The population of the research study is the 12th – grade students of Daarul Mughni Islamic Boarding School Bogor, Indonesia. The sample of the research study was chosen by using a simple random sample of 80 respondents of 292 students. Descriptive research is selected by the researcher because it deals with the phenomenon of the students’ speaking difficulties in a real-life situation that happened to the students while they are speaking English at school. The description of the questionnaire result explains about three aspects such as linguistic factors, non- linguistic factors, and the causes of speaking difficulties related to the environment, speaking difficulties related to English teaching, and curriculum design

Penerapan Teknik JIGSAW untuk Meningkatkan Keterampilan Memahami Bacaan Bahasa Inggris Dengan Memperhatikan Sikap Berbahasa Siswa Supeno Supeno; Imam Suseno

Peningkatan keterampilan memahami bacaan bahasa Inggris dengan menerapkan teknik pembelajaran JIGSAW merupakan bagian dari upaya memperbaiki situasi dan proses pembelajaran dikelas. Teknik pembelajaran JIGSAW dengan memperhatikan beberapa aspek: pembentukan kelompok diskusi, penentuan jumlah anggota dalam satu kelompok, jumlah siswa yang mewakili sebagai kelompok ahli, dan cara evaluasi untuk menilai efektivitas diskusi serta upaya meningkatkan sikap berbahasa siswa. Penelitian ini termasuk jenis classroom action research, menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif sebab peneliti membangun gambaran yang kompleks dan holistic, melaporkan pandangan atau opini dari kolaborator dan situasi penelitian berjalan secara yang alamiah. Penelitian diawali dengan melakukan penelitian pendahuluan dan kemudian melakukan tindakan berupa siklus, terdiri dari perencanaan, pelaksanaan tindakan, analisis data, serta refleksi. Setelah melakukan analisis dan refleksi pada siklus I, peneliti melanjutkan dengan siklus II dan setelah melakukan analisis dan refleksi hasil tindakan pada siklus II, peneliti dan kolaborator memutuskan untuk berhenti karena telah mendapatkan alur pelaksanaan JIGSAW yang ideal. Penerapan teknik pembelajaran JIGSAW dapat berlangsung sangat baik dengan teknis kunci yaitu 1) menentukan siswa menjadi anggota kelompok ahli, 2) jumlah kelompok sesuai dengan jumlah siswa dalam kelompok ahli (tiap kelompok terdiri dari 4-5 siswa), 3) guru berupaya meningkatkan sikap berbahasa siswa melalui pendekatan dan komunikasi dengan baik, 4) menggunakan instrumen untuk mendeteksi sikap berbahasa siswa dan keterampilan memahami bacaan bahasa Inggris.Kata kunci: teknik jigsaw, sikap berbahasa, dan keterampilan memahami bacaan bahasa Inggris.

Metacognitive Model in Teaching Reading and Writing Supeno Supeno

The aims of this research is to know how teaching reading and writing are observed by metacognitive model and advantages and disadvantages in teaching process itself. The samples are 42 students of SMK An-Nurmaniyah Binong Permai and 39 students of SMK Yuppentek Tangerang The research is conducted in a qualitative research as the methodology. The research findings shows that most metacognitive processess are well-applied and their advantages and disadvantages in teaching reading and writing.

Kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat ini bertujuan meningkatkan pemberdayaan potensi serta kapasitas guru pendidik di Pesantren Madrasah Diniyah Yayasan Al-Salam yang berada di Propinsi Banten. Pendekatan kepada peserta adalah dengan menerapkan pendekatan andragogi dan Kegiatan ini melibatkan guru-guru pendidik Yayasan Al-Salam dalam suatu struktur pengalaman disertai pemilihan metode pembelajaran yang sesuai yaitu metode ceramah, diskusi dan yang lainnya untuk diterapkan di dalam proses belajar mengajar baik di dalam maupun di luar kelas. Diharapkan para peserta yaitu guru dan peserta pendidik Yayasan Al-Salam mampu memilih, menerapkan satu atau beberapa pendekatan pengajaran tersebut dalam menunjang dan mensukseskan proses belajar mengajar di yayasan pondok pesantren tersebut

The purpose of this research is to discuss the effect of flashcards on teaching speaking. The purpose of this research is to find out whether Flashcard is effective for teaching speaking during online learning. This study used a quasi-experimental method with a one group pre-test and post-test design. There are two variables in this study; namely the independent variable and the dependent variable, while the independent variable is Flashcard and the dependent variable is the result of the post test (students' speaking ability). The population in this study were students of class XI Mutiara Bangsa 2. The sample of this study amounted to 13 people. This study uses only one instrument. It is an oral speaking test. Furthermore, the process instrument was used pre-test and post-test. In addition, the researcher collected data by assessing students' vocabulary and fluency. As a result, the data showed that there was a significant difference between the post-test students in the experimental class and the control class. The post-test P-value is lower than the significance level which indicates that there is a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test mean.

The textbooks play an important role in teaching and learning activity in language program. Because of the various textbooks provided, textbook analysis is seen as an important thing to be conducted in order to find out how the components of the textbook are served. This study was aimed to investigate to what extent the English textbook entitled “Bahasa Inggris: When English Rings a Bell” for eighth grade students meet the criteria of BSNP (linguistic features and presentation of materias). The linguistic features consist of language appropriateness while the presentation of materials consist of content appropriates, presentation appropriateness, and graphic appropriateness. This study was descriptive qualitative approach. The instrument used to collect the data is document study used in the form of checklist. A checklist was made adopted from BSNP (2011) framework. The results of this study showed that textbook entitled “When English Rings a Bell” for Eight Grade is suitable to be used in teaching learning process. The textbook achieved the fulfillment score language appropriateness (100%), content appropriateness (81,25%), presentation appropriateness (88,89%), and graphics appropriateness (97,64%). Then, the English textbook When English Rings a Bell for VIII Grade is categorized into “good” textbook by achieving the score of 95,07% .Thus, it can be concluded that textbook is suitable to be used in order to help the teaching learning process in the classroom with the help of other sources and teacher improvisation.
