Abstract

This present study intended to develop the first draft syllabus for writing course in English Education major. Particularly in teaching writing as foreign language, syllabus became one of the key factors for teachers before and while delivering thelesson. The research was carried out by initial steps of research and development approach (R and D). The respondents were the students from writing classes, writing lecturers, and the stakeholders in one university in Jakarta. In collecting data, the instruments were the questionnaire and in-depth interview. After analyzing the data from need analysis descriptively, the researchers have modeled a developed layout of the syllabus for writing class. The syllabus is developed in a set of concepts and rationale, general and specific objectives or outcomes of the course as competences, teaching methods, materials and content, practices and activity, and evaluation.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis kesalahan penggunaan taksonomi dan ejaan dalam buku panduan Happy Love Guide karya Jose Aditya untuk mengungkapkan seberapa banyak kesalahan yang terdapat dalam buku panduan ini. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah analisis isi yang didalamnya terdapat upaya memutuskan tujuan, mendefinisikan istilah-istilah, mengkhususkan unit yang akan dianalisis, mencari data yang relevan, membangun hubungan konseptual, merencanakan penarikan sampel, dan melakukan pengodean kategori yang dilakukan secara objektif dan sistematis. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan adalah teknik sadap, yakni menyadap kesalahan data yang terdapat dalam buku Happy Love Guide. Teknik analisis data yang digunakan adalah teknik agih dengan teknik dasar bagi unsur langsung dan teknik lanjutan yang digunakan adalah teknik pengubahan wujud dengan merekonstruksi kalimat. Hasil penelitian ini ditemukan 42 buah data kesalahan taksonomi siasat permukan dengan rincian sebagai berikut:  (1) penambahan sebanyak 18 buah data, (2) pembentukan sebanyak 15 buah data, (3) penghilangan sebanyak 7 buah data, dan (4) pengurutan sebanyak 2 buah data. Sementara itu, ditemukan 45 buah data kesalahan ejaan dengan rincian sebagai berikut: (1) penulisan kata sebanyak 22 buah data, (2) penggunaan tanda baca sebanyak 9 buah data, (3) penggunaan huruf miring sebanyak 5 buah data, (4) penggunaan huruf kapital sebanyak 4 buah data, (5) penggunaan unsur serapan sebanyak 3 buah data, (6) penggunaan lambang bilangan sebanyak 2 buah data, dan (7) tidak ada kesalahan pada pemenggalan kata. Kata kunci: Kesalahan Berbahasa, Taksonomi Siasat Permukaan, Ejaan, Buku Panduan “Happy Love Guide”.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan (1) Aspek kohesi gramatikal dalam kumpulan cerpen konvensi karya A. Mustofa Bisri dan (2) Aspek kohesi leksikal dalam kumpulan cerpen konvensi karya A. Mustofa Bisri. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan adalah simak bebas libat cakap dan catat. Teknik analisis data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah teknik agih dengan teknik dasar bagi unsur langsung (BUL) dan teknik lanjutan yang digunakan adalah teknik lesap dan teknik ganti. Setelah melakukan penelitian, peneliti menemukan beberapa temuan, sebagai berikut; (1) Kohesi gramatikal dalam penelitian ini ditemukan 109 data dengan rincian sebagai berikut; aspek pengacuan sebanyak 99 data atau 91%, konjungsi sebanyak 8 data atau 7%, ellipsis sebanyak 2 data atau 2%, dan subtitusi 0 data atau 0%. Sedangkan (2) Kohesi leksikal ditemukan 26 data dengan rincian sebagai berikut; aspek repetisi 6 data atau 23%, sinonim sebanyak 6 data atau 23%, antonim 6 data atau 23%, ekuivalensi sebanayak 4 data atau 15%. hiponimi sebanyak 2 data atau 8%, dan kolokasi sebanyak 2 data atau 8%. Masing-masing aspek dari kohesi, baik kohesi gramatikal maupun kohesi leksikal   ini memiliki peran dalam pembentukan teks dalam wacana, sehingga wacana dapat tersusun secara koheren.Kata Kunci : Kohesi Gramatikal, Kohesi Leksikal, Cerpen

Abstract

The objective of this research is to analyze the character and moral value in “The Lorax” by Chris Renaud. The method employed a descriptive-analysis. Movie script and scenes were the data with tables for characters and moral values to be analyzed as the instruments. The data were analyzed by using Schmidt’s theory for characters and Gulla’s theory for moral values. The research results find out the five types of characters. The protagonist has the most fractions with 26%. Sidekick has the second-highest level at 20%. Another sidekick represents the same 20 % of the total. The antagonist's share of showing in this story is 16 %. The following percentage is 10 % for the mentor and the smallest group in terms of character is a love interest at 8%. The research also results in 11 moral values in this movie.They are kindness 18,7%, commitment 17,6%,  love 14,7%, honesty 12,7%, respect for others 9,8%, integrity 4,9%,  sacrifice 4,9%, compassionate 4,9%, truthfulness 4,9%, tolerance 3,9% and sincerity 3%. Ted Wiggins as the protagonist and the moral value of kindness have the most portion in this movie

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out: semantic (denotation and connotation), pragmatic (illocutionary act: assertive/representative, directive, commisive, expressive, and declarative), and frequency of occurrence of the semantic and pragmatic aspects. The research object of this study is utterances containing semantic and pragmatic aspects. The data were collected from Jacinda Ardern’s speech on Tuesday, 19 March 2019. The speech was delivered in front of the Parliament after the Christchurch mosque terror attack. The technique used is the noting technique, separating technique, and transferring technique in collecting the data. This research is aimed to analyze the semantic and pragmatic aspects of Jacinda Ardern’s speech. The method used in this research is the qualitative descriptive method that aims to analyze the semantic and pragmatic aspects of Jacinda Ardern’s speech. The research findings as follows: the writer focuses on two aspects of semantic, namely denotation and connotation, and in pragmatic aspects, the writer focuses on the illocutionary act, which is assertive/representative, directive, commisive, expressive, and declarative.  After the writer analyzed the data, the result is 1. Semantic aspects: a. denotation (76%), b. connotation (24%). The bigger presentations are denotation because each sentence mostly has literal or primary meaning. 2. Pragmatic aspects (illocutionary): a. assertive (46%), b. directive (12%), c. commisive (17%), d. expressive (8%) and e. declarative (17%). The bigger presentations are assertive speech acts because the speaker is representing reality.

Abstract

Students in Indonesia have already learned English since they were in Junior High School; in fact, some of them have studied English since they were in Elementary School but most of them are not able to speak English fluently even though they have graduated from Senior High Schools. This caused of Teachers taught English by focusing on grammar and using Indonesian as lingua franca when they were teaching. To solve the problem mentioned above, a new strategy is needed, the strategy which is appropriate to teaching English as a means of communication.Key words : English learning strategy, English as a means of communication

Abstract

The research aims to analyze the characters and moral values contained in the film "TheSound of Music" by Robert Wise. Based on the theories of character and moral values, there are four primary points to analyze: 1) There are three kinds of characters that appear in the characters in "The Sound of Music" by Robert Wise based on Russel, those are the Protagonist, the main protagonist played by Maria and the Von Trapp Family and the sisters in the monastery, the Antagonist, played by The Baroness and Herr Zeller, and Foil character played by Rolfe and Franz, 2) There are seven types of moral values that appear in "The Sound of Music" by Robert Wise based on Borba, they are respect, kindness, conscience, self-control, justice, empathy and tolerance.Keywords: content analysis; moral values; movie

Abstract

The aims of this research: 1. To describe in detail the implementation of Interdisciplinary learning. 2. To describe the planning of implementation, 3. To describe the process of Interdisciplinary between English and Economy , 4. To describe the assessment done 5.To describe in detail the students’ achievements as the effect for Speaking and Writing skills .The population is class X of SMA Lentera Harapan Curug. The sample is 35 and the method is descriptive research, and it is a case study. The results show: 1. The interdisciplinary implemented is multidisciplinary because it is suitable for the high school. 2.The interdisciplinary learning planning is at the beginning of the semester. 3.The implementation consists of preliminary, core, and closing activities. 4.The assessment facilitated an authentic to assess the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains.5.The implementation developed students writing and speaking skills that can be seen from the student’s achievement which is in good score.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze white supremacy and structural racism in the film "The Shawshank Redemption". The method used is descriptive-qualitative to describe white supremacy and structural racism in the film. Data is obtained, analyzed and explained based on dialogues contained in the film, namely: 1) white supremacy that is analyzed from a) the appearances of the character using a sequence table, and b) visible glorification and invisible glorification using glorification dialogue table, and 2) structural racism, using binary opposition, namely positive and negative characterization of the characters. By the sequence table, the character that is predominant in the film is Andy Dufresne. From the glorification dialogue table, visible glorification gets the highest presentation while invisible glorification gets the lowest presentation. This shows that white supremacy exists in American film. As for structural racism, the negative characterization of the supporting characters is the highest while the negative characterization of the main character is the lowest. This shows that structural racism exists in American film.Key Words: American film; drama; white supremacy; structural racism.
