Abstract

People with disabilities (PWDSs) are usually left out of the mainstream education and socio-economic activities. These include those with sensory, physical, and cognitive disabilities. The United Nation's Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (2006) and Kenya's Persons with Disabilities Act (2004) address issues affecting PWDSs to promote, protect, and ensure the full and equal enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms, promote respect for their dignity as well as facilitate the full participation in all sectors of society. Despite these efforts, PWDSs continue to be marked by experiences of discrimination, prejudice and inequality. Religion and Theological interpretations of disability have significantly shaped the ways in which society relates to PWDSs thereby reinforcing marginalization and exclusion in the social, economic, political, educational and religious life of the society. This presentation is derived from a study on promoting awareness and participation of PWDSs in education and other community-based programs in Siaya County. This action research study investigated the relationship between poverty and Disability from the perspective of PWDSs. Data was collected using focus group discussions and interviews. The main finding was that PWDSs are living in poverty, which they attribute to being disabled. The church, perceived to have a role to play in community welfare did not seem to have a structured way of identifying or providing for PWDSs, who are incidentally members of their churches. In matters of education, it was found that there are many children with disabilities out of school that members of the clergy were aware of but seemed to have no way of engaging stakeholders to support them. Misinterpretation of religious teachings seemed to have a bearing on how PWDSs were perceived. It is recommended that the church should take active role in identifying and engaging relevant stakeholders in providing services, including education, for PWDS.

Abstract

This article provides a comprehensive analysis of customs regimes, encompassing both general and special procedures, with a particular emphasis on re-exportation. The research aims to elucidate the complexities and practical applications of re-exportation, a customs regime frequently employed yet often misunderstood due to limited information dissemination from customs authorities. The study explores the intricacies of re-exportation procedures, including the necessary documentation and operational processes, to ensure its effective and compliant implementation. The research employs a qualitative methodology, drawing upon legal documents, customs regulations, and official guidelines to examine the theoretical and practical aspects of re-exportation within the broader context of customs regimes. The data analysis reveals that re-exportation serves as a crucial mechanism in international trade, facilitating the movement of goods that were initially imported but subsequently require re-export due to various reasons, such as incorrect specifications, quality issues, or changes in market demand. The findings underscore the importance of meticulous planning and adherence to customs regulations to avoid penalties and ensure the seamless execution of re-exportation operations. Concludes by emphasizing the need for enhanced transparency and information sharing from customs authorities to promote a deeper understanding of re-exportation procedures among businesses and individuals engaged in international trade. This contributes to the existing body of knowledge by providing a detailed analysis of re-exportation and its implications for customs compliance and trade facilitation. The insights presented in this article can assist businesses and individuals in navigating the complexities of re-exportation, thereby fostering greater efficiency and effectiveness in their international trade operations.

Abstract

In Africa, the production of ceramic sculpture receptacles is a common artistic practice. This artistry has attracted a plethora of historical, cultural, archaeological, and ethnographic studies. Such studies have revealed some of these African ceramic sculpture receptacles' metaphorical, philosophical, social, and cultural contexts. However, the paucity of literature on the symbols and metaphors of the ceramic sculpture receptacles produced at Takoradi Technical University (TTU) in Ghana provides a research gap. The current study, therefore, sought to examine selected ceramic sculpture receptacles from the Ceramic Design Technology Department of TTU to reveal their symbolic and metaphorical connotations from the indigenous Ghanaian cultural context. The study utilised a qualitative research approach and a descriptive research design. Twelve (12) ceramic sculpture receptacles were purposively sampled, and triangulation of instruments, including non-participant observation, personal interviews, and document reviews, were used to elicit interpretative data from thirteen experts (lecturers & students of TTU), who were all practicing artists. The findings reveal that the twelve ceramic sculpture receptacles incorporate culturally revered animals (birds, reptiles, amphibians, mammals) as decorative symbols. These animal-related metaphors are strongly tied to traditional Ghanaian society's sociocultural, religious, and political dimensions. These symbols reflect rich cultural values and philosophies, making the artefacts vital for preserving and promoting Ghanaian cultural heritage. The study recommends further research on other institutional artefacts to decode their embedded sociocultural repositories. This tends to promote and preserve Ghanaian cultural and artistic heritage, which serves as an educational tool for current and future generations.

Abstract

This research paper studies the cognitive aspect of the magazine's cover lines, which are employed to represent and present celebrities to the public. The present study aims to identify the conceptual metaphors and the cognitive function they fulfill in print media discourse, particularly the celebrity magazine category. Lakoff and Johnson 1980 is the model adopted for analyzing the data under study. The results of this paper revealed a scarcity of metaphorical language in magazine cover lines in general.  Additionally, most conceptual metaphors have been spotted as confined to limited metaphor patterns and types. These are found geared towards unveiling facts related to a celebrity's private life. They are intended to arouse the readers' curiosity and encourage them to buy the issue.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the difficulties Japanese language learners face in understanding and mastering the meanings of kanji characters, as well as to evaluate the effectiveness of the image-based visual method in helping learners comprehend and master kanji. A qualitative approach with a descriptive method was employed in this study. The data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests administered to 12 Japanese language learners at Universitas Harapan Medan. The results indicate that prior to the image-based visual learning method, students encountered difficulties in mastering the meanings of kanji characters. The pre-test scores revealed challenges in recalling the meanings of kanji, the correct order of strokes, and the pronunciation associated with kanji. However, after the implementation of the image-based visual learning method, there was a significant improvement in the post-test scores. The average score increased from 37.92 in the pre-test to 80.42 in the post-test. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that Japanese language learners struggle to master kanji meanings. However, the image-based visual learning method proved effective in helping them understand and master kanji, with significant improvements observed. This learning method helped learners recall and understand kanji characters and overcome the difficulties they faced previously.
