Abstract

Traditional craftsmanship maps out the Chinese philosophy of creation, but it has suffered during the rapid transformation of the aesthetic of industrialised, urbanised modernity. Glass art has a long history in China, but for a long time it has not been able to integrate deeply with science, but has existed as an imitation or substitute for nearby materials, so the several changes in glass art are closely linked to the entry of Western art into the Chinese art world, which is why it is defined as 'imported'. After the initial imitation of Western glass art, modern China has come to recognise the importance of its own cultural identity, which is at the heart of Eastern art's standing on the world stage and its dialogue with the world.

Abstract

This academic paper explores the influence of Basic Design Fundamentals (BDF) education on the creative process of fashion design students in Surabaya, Indonesia. BDF education, rooted in the principles of design, serves as a foundational element in various design disciplines, including fashion. The study employs a mixed-method research approach, combining quantitative Likert scale assessments and qualitative interviews with ten students from the University of Surabaya's fashion design program. The research reveals that BDF education significantly enhances the creative abilities of fashion design students in Surabaya. The majority of participants strongly agree that BDF education positively impacted their creative process, resulting in more visually appealing and well-structured designs. Moreover, BDF education empowers students to strike a balance between creative intuition and systematic thinking, fostering innovative design solutions. However, some participants suggest the need for a more direct application of BDF principles to fashion design projects to bridge the gap between theory and practice effectively. Overall, this study underscores the vital role of BDF education in nurturing creativity and problem-solving skills among fashion design students in Surabaya. The findings offer valuable insights for curriculum development, emphasizing the potential benefits of integrating theoretical design principles with practical applications, thereby enhancing the quality and competitiveness of fashion design graduates. Future research may explore the broader applicability of these findings across diverse cultural and educational contexts.

Abstract

The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) imposes on signatory States the obligation to implement and apply legal measures promoting equality and the elimination of gender discrimination. The General Assembly adopted it in 1979. Violence against women is, on the one hand, one of the most systematic and widespread forms of human rights violation in the world and, on the other, a socio-economic problem that impacts social harmony, economic growth and threatens overall development progress.  The consequences include the deterioration of women’s mental and physical health, disruption of communities, and a decrease in economic productivity. The manifestation of unequal power relations between women and men is one of the most extreme forms of gender-based discrimination and an attack on the dignity and fundamental rights of women and girls. Gender-based violence stems from structural causes linked to the norms and values of a society, culture, or community. These factors legitimize and perpetuate various gender inequalities based on a hierarchy of relationships between men and women, thus contributing to gender-based violence. Harmful stereotypes and traditional expectations further bolster these inequalities, restricting women's autonomy and frequently rationalizing acts of violence. At the beginning of October 2023, a woman was subjected to cruel and degrading treatment, tied up and beaten by law enforcement officers in Kisangani, the capital of Tshopo province, on the orders of her ex-husband; the latter, using his position as a public official, ordered the arrest and beating of his ex-wife by law enforcement officers; As a result, the person who gave the order and the officers who carried out the manifestly illegal order were prosecuted and convicted, in accordance with the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women, which requires States to act with due diligence to prevent, investigate and punish acts of violence against women in accordance with national law, whether perpetrated by the State or by private persons. Every woman has the right to respect for the inherent dignity of the human person and to recognition and protection of her human and legal rights. This article is timely and calls for the unfailing application of provisions on respect for the recognised rights of women and girls, in the interests of a fairer and more balanced society.

Abstract

Students with Hearing Impairment (HI) encounter various challenges in learning due to their hearing loss, significantly impacting their academic performance, particularly in exams such as the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE). This study aims to explore the correlation between proficiency in Kenyan Sign Language (KSL) and Signed Exact English (SEE) with English performance among HI learners. Conducted in four special secondary schools for the deaf in Kenya's Nyanza region, the study involved 48 participants, including 33 Form 3 students, 7 English teachers, 4 Curriculum Support Officers, and 4 School Principals. Utilizing a qualitative multiple case study design, the research employed purposive sampling to select schools, saturated sampling for English teachers, and stratified sampling for Form 3 students. Data collection methods included in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, classroom observations, and document analysis. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data, revealing that pre-lingual HI students, deaf before speech development, exhibit greater proficiency in KSL than SEE and Standard English (SE). Conversely, post-lingual HI students, deafened after speech acquisition, may struggle with KSL initially but tend to excel in SEE due to their prior speech development. Over time, post-lingual students may achieve proficiency in KSL after integrating into the Deaf community.

The researcher used  quantitative approach by the design of this study was quasi-experimental research to determine the effectiveness of the Engage, Study, and Activate (ESA) method on vocabulary mastery. The population of the research consisted of 205 students, and the sample of the research was the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 5 Tangerang for the academic year 2021-2022, which consisted of 60 students. The results of the research showed that the students’ vocabulary in the pre-test and post-test differed significantly, up to 20 percent. After receiving the treatment, their vocabulary significantly improved. This can be seen from the average pre-test results in the experimental class of 61.6 and the average post-test of 74.13. The mean of the pre-test results in the control class was 58.66, and the average post-test results were 64.26. The value of the t-test was greater than the t-table (5.40 > 2.00). It indicated that the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. It can be concluded that the use of the Engage, Study, and Activate (ESA) method is effective in improving vocabulary mastery.
