Abstract

Not only change the landscape of popular culture, but the presence of social media also reshapes the structure and the agency. Nowadays, social media can turn ordinary people to celebrities. Using Instagram and YouTube, Ria Ricis has become a piety celebrity who shows her Islamic identity through Islamic performance by wearing the veil in a casual way and earns money from her uploaded videos in social media. Based on a case study of this figure, this paper raises questions related to Islamic popular culture in Indonesia: How does Indonesian define their public sphere currently amid the growth of social media usage? How does Indonesian Muslim respond to social media as a part of digital technology amidst Islamization in the post of an authoritarian regime? What is the possibility of tension for that young Indonesian Muslim as micro-celebrity while facing the three factors related, Islamic identities, enjoyment, and economic benefits? This paper argues that the new media platform has not only affected Indonesian Muslims' lifestyles, but also the way in which they negotiate Islamic values, secular life, and economic interest.

Abstract

This study focusses on the genealogy of the Forum Lingkar Pena and Komunitas Matapena movements, which have produced novel Islam remaja (Islamic youth novels) and novel pop pesantren (pesantren popular novels). Using Bourdieu’s concept of habitus, I analyze the field where Forum Lingkar Pena and Komunitas Matapena discourses are disseminated, particularly among Muslim youth in Indonesia and how Islamic popular culture is represented through these novels and the dynamic of Muslim youth community in struggling for meaning in the Indonesian literary field in general. This research found that establishment of FLP and Komunitas Matapena can be described through three main ideas. Firstly, these communities encountered the massiveness of popular culture by offering a medium that supports identity formation for Muslim youth. Secondly, there is a link between the idealism promoted by Muslim organization movements and the establishment of FLP and Komunitas Matapena, and this link determines their forms and cultural products. Thirdly, they use popular culture, such as magazines and popular novels, as media to spread and preserve their idealism, targeting young people.

Abstract

This paper explores the veiling issues and the negotiation of piety among women in Komunitas Muslimah Beauty of Detik Forum. This paper examines to what extent this online community discusses hijab as fashion and piety? what the basis of the arguments for negotiating them? and how is piety constructed through commodity by women in that forum? The answers to this question are important to understand because they examine the assumption considering the lack of connection between piety and veiling when both are more materialized in such of commodity fetishism. To do this, I analyze the online discussion within the Komunitas Muslimah Beautiful in detik.com website. The findings of the paper inform both sociological understanding of the rise democracy in terms of the public sphere as well as the negotiation of women in their effort to connect veiling and piety within their online discussion.

Abstract

Abstract

This paper aims to understand the post-New Order political Islam, by taking the case in Tasikmalaya from its historical and reactualization perspective. Maurice Halbwachs and Pierre Nora called the last thing as a memory, which is considered the antithesis of history. In practice, the boundary between history and memory is indeed blurred or obscured. For the analysis in this paper, these two things are positioned differently. The focus of the article is to understand the extent to which democracy works in local cultural values which may conflict with the views of liberal human rights. The case of Tasikmalaya is interesting to put in the context of “democratic communitarianism” and more broadly can be used to see tolerance in Indonesia through the lens of cooperation between universal human rights principles and religious interpretations that are grounded in communal experience.

Abstract

This study tries to present the characteristics of  philosophical knowledge of the Qur'an and Prophetic Revelation according to Munji Laswad in his book Islâm wa al-Falâsifa". This book presents the appearance or manifestation of the philosophers' unity (their perspective on Islam) in several theological discourses based on the characteristics of philosophical perspectives. The author finds that philosophers according to Munji Laswad have special characteristics in seeing and understanding Islam and some of the main concepts in it specifically related to their perspective on the Qur'an and Prophetic Revelation. Among these characteristics is a knowledge (depiction of something) that must be connected with the burhan (demonstrative proposition) which is a special feature of the schools of Islamic philosophy. Even this type of burhan is a differentiator between philosophy and others, either theology, Sufism or jurisprudence.
