Abstract

The problem addressed in this study is the gap between the ideal of holistic Islamic education and the phenomenon of politicization of Islamic boarding schools in the contemporary era, which has the potential to reduce the educational and spiritual role of these institutions. This study uses a qualitative approach with a philosophical-analytical library research method. Data collection techniques were carried out through documentary studies of primary sources, namely the book At-Tarbiyah al-Islamiyyah wa Falsafatuha by Athiyah al-Abrasyi, as well as secondary sources in the form of relevant literature on the politicization of Islamic boarding schools and their role in politics. The data analysis techniques used are content analysis and conceptual analysis with hermeneutics to understand and contextualize al-Abrasyi's thoughts on current realities. The results of the study show: first, al-Abrasyi's concept of Islamic education emphasizes the integral formation of a complete human being that combines spiritual, intellectual, moral, and social aspects, with Islamic boarding schools as bastions of universal Islamic values. Second, various forms of contemporary politicization, such as electoral mobilization, the instrumentalization of kiai, and partisan curricula, are deviations from the essence of education because they reduce pesantren to transactional tools, threaten integrity, and divide communities. Third, as a solution, the ideal principle of the role of pesantren in the public sphere must be based on the ethics of benefit and independence. Pesantren need to function as a moral force by instilling Islamic political ethics, maintaining independence from power, and being active in community empowerment and advocacy for justice. Thus, the influence of pesantren should be built through exemplary behavior and sincere devotion, not pragmatic politicization, in order to be in harmony with the essence of holistic Islamic education.

Abstract

This study aims to examine how the values of religious moderation sourced from the Qur'an are integrated in the management model of the Istiqlal Mosque, as well as analyze the effectiveness of its application in institutional governance, da'wah programs, and congregational services. This research uses a qualitative method with the type of case study research and phenomenological approach, through data collection techniques in the form of observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation studies. The results of the study show that the Istiqlal Mosque consistently applies the values of tawassuṭ, tasāmuḥ, and i'tidāl in its management through program innovations such as the Istiqlal Learning Center (ILC), civilization diplomacy, strengthening Qur'anic literacy, and inclusive and professional public services. This management model has proven to be able to strengthen Istiqlal's role as the center of moderate Islamic civilization that is adaptive, modern, and oriented towards the benefit of the ummah. This research is useful as a theoretical reference in the development of the management of religious institutions based on religious moderation and as a practical inspiration for other mosques in building governance that is inclusive, harmonious, and in harmony with the values of the Qur'an.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the increasing spread of religious radicalism in Indonesia which has the potential to threaten social harmony, the integrity of the nation, and moderate Islamic values that have taken root in people's lives. In this context, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) as the largest religious organization in Indonesia has a strategic role in counteracting radicalism through cultural and religious educational approaches. This research aims to analyze NU's strategy in preventing and overcoming radicalism, especially through strengthening moderate Islamic values (wasathiyyah), developing education based on local traditions, and internalizing the teachings of Ahlussunnah wal Jama'ah. The research methodology used is a qualitative approach with a descriptive-analytical type of research. Data was collected through literature studies of NU's official documents, books, and scientific journals, and supported by interviews and observations of NU's educational practices and religious activities at the grassroots level. Data analysis techniques are carried out by means of data reduction, data presentation, and thematic conclusion drawn. The findings of the study show that NU's strategy in countering radicalism is carried out through several main approaches, namely: (1) cultural education based on pesantren traditions, religious practices, and local wisdom; (2) strengthening the curriculum and moderate Islamic da'wah that emphasizes the values of tasamuh (tolerance), tawazun (balance), and i'tidal (justice); and (3) the development of educational and da'wah institutional networks that are adaptive to contemporary challenges. This strategy has proven effective in building people's ideological resilience to radical ideas and strengthening a peaceful and inclusive Islam in Indonesia.

Abstract

Sufism holds a strategic position in shaping the Islamic character of the Nusantara community one that is moderate, tolerant, and civil. This article provides a comparative study of the thoughts of three prominent Nusantara scholars: Syekh Arsyad al-Banjari, Syekh Nawawi al-Bantani, and KH. Hasyim Asy’ari within the framework of Ahlussunnah wal Jama‘ah (Aswaja). The study employs a literature-based approach by examining primary works as well as relevant secondary sources. The findings reveal that all three scholars regard Sufism as a dimension that perfects the Sharia, characterized by an ethical-moral orientation (tasawwuf akhlaqi) that emphasizes purification of the soul, cultivation of proper conduct, and integration of Sharia, ethics, and spiritual practice. Syekh Arsyad al-Banjari highlights soul purification grounded in adherence to Sharia; Syekh Nawawi al-Bantani stresses a Sufism centered on ihsani ethics and social responsibility; while KH. Hasyim Asy’ari positions Sufism as the moral foundation of santri education, especially within pesantren traditions. Comparatively, the three scholars share a convergent orientation toward religious moderation, rejection of extreme forms of Sufism, and reinforcement of social ethics. Their ideas remain highly relevant in addressing contemporary challenges such as moral degradation, digital disruption, radicalism, and mental health issues. Thus, the Sufi legacy of Nusantara scholars within the Aswaja perspective carries not only historical value but also serves as a transformative paradigm for modern Islamic spirituality and education.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate Islamic Religious Education (PAI) learning in developing students’ character at SMP Negeri 8 Samarinda using the CIPP (Context, Input, Process, Product) evaluation model. This research employed a qualitative approach with an evaluative research design. Data collection techniques were conducted through observation, interviews, and documentation involving the principal, Islamic Religious Education teachers, and students as research subjects. Data analysis used the Miles and Huberman model through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that in the context aspect, PAI learning had been aligned with the Merdeka Curriculum and students’ character development needs through various religious habituation activities at school. In the input aspect, the learning process was supported by learning tools, varied teaching methods, digital learning media, and adequate teacher competence, although there were still limitations in learning facilities and infrastructure. In the process aspect, learning activities were carried out actively and interactively through discussions, question-and-answer sessions, presentations, worship practices, and the habituation of character values in daily learning activities. Meanwhile, in the product aspect, PAI learning had a positive impact on students’ character development, particularly in religious attitudes, discipline, responsibility, and politeness. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that Islamic Religious Education learning at SMP Negeri 8 Samarinda has been implemented quite effectively in supporting students’ character development based on the CIPP evaluation model. However, improvements are still needed in learning facilities, equal student participation, and sustainable character development programs.

Abstract

This article examines the challenges and opportunities of research methodology in contemporary Islamic education studies. The rapid development of science, digital technology, and social transformation has encouraged significant changes in research approaches used to study Islamic education. This study aims to analyze the development of research methodologies, identify methodological challenges and opportunities, and explain their implications for the future of Islamic education studies. The research employed a qualitative approach using the library research method. Data were collected from scientific journal articles, books, proceedings, and other relevant academic sources, then analyzed through content analysis techniques. The findings indicate that research methodology in Islamic education has shifted from predominantly normative and textual approaches toward more empirical, contextual, interdisciplinary, and technology-based approaches. The study also reveals several challenges, including the integration of Islamic normative values with scientific objectivity, the complexity of educational issues, and ethical concerns in digital research. On the other hand, the development of mixed methods, digital technology utilization, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the integration of Islamic epistemology with modern scientific methodologies provide significant opportunities for strengthening Islamic education research. These developments have implications for improving methodological competence, digital literacy, curriculum reform, and the development of an integrative research paradigm. Therefore, adaptive and innovative methodological development is essential to enhance the quality, relevance, and contribution of Islamic education studies in responding to contemporary educational challenges.

Abstract

The development of students' character has become a major concern in primary education, particularly in the context of Islamic education, where moral, spiritual, and social values are expected to be integrated into the learning process. However, conventional teacher-centered instructional practices often limit students' engagement and reduce opportunities for meaningful character formation. This study aims to examine the implementation of creative learning methods in Islamic education and to analyze their contribution to character development among primary school students. The research employed a qualitative library research design by systematically reviewing contemporary scholarly literature, educational policies, and empirical studies related to creative pedagogy, Islamic education, and character education. Data were analyzed using descriptive-analytical and thematic content analysis to identify key pedagogical patterns and their implications for character development. The findings indicate that creative learning methods—including project-based learning, storytelling, role-playing, educational games, collaborative learning, digital learning media, and reflective activities significantly enhance students' participation, critical thinking, creativity, communication skills, and internalization of Islamic values. These methods also promote essential character traits such as honesty, responsibility, discipline, empathy, cooperation, and respect for diversity by encouraging active and contextual learning experiences. The study further reveals that the integration of creative pedagogy with Islamic ethical principles strengthens both cognitive achievement and affective development, leading to a more holistic educational process. The novelty of this study lies in proposing an integrated conceptual framework that synthesizes creative pedagogical approaches with Islamic character education principles, providing a comprehensive model for fostering twenty-first-century competencies while preserving Islamic moral values in primary school education.

Abstract

Cultivating Qur'anic morals in early childhood requires sustained collaboration between schools and families to ensure consistent moral habituation across learning environments. This study aims to analyze the implementation and dynamics of parent–school collaboration in cultivating Qur'anic morals through the At-Tibyan Curriculum at TAUD SaQu Zidna Ilma. A qualitative case study design was employed using semi-structured interviews, non-participant observation, and document analysis. Data were analyzed using the Miles model through four stages: data collection, data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The findings reveal that collaboration is built through continuous communication, shared understanding developed through parenting programs, collaborative monitoring using adab journals and mutaba'ah books, and a clear division of roles between schools and families. The dynamics of collaboration are influenced by parental involvement, teacher responsiveness, monitoring systems, and institutional support. This study demonstrates that the effective cultivation of Qur'anic morals depends on the integration of collaborative mechanisms that sustain moral habituation across school and home environments.
