Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the management of hazardous and toxic waste (B3) at PT. X, a spare parts manufacturing industry in Surabaya. Hazardous waste management is a major challenge in this industry due to its hazardous, corrosive, flammable and environmentally harmful properties if improperly handled. Data was collected through field observations, interviews with relevant stakeholders, and analysis of regulations and company reports. The results show that PT. X's level of compliance in hazardous waste management is 61.1%, which is considered fair but not ideal. Key deficiencies were identified in the areas of packaging, labelling and storage. The waste packaging does not fully match the waste characteristics, while the labelling is fragile and lacks complete information. In addition, the storage area is located within the production area, making it unsafe and difficult to access. To improve the management of hazardous waste, the study recommends the use of appropriate packaging materials, durable labels with comprehensive information, and the design of storage facilities that meet regulatory standards. Implementing these recommendations is expected to improve the effectiveness of hazardous waste management, reduce pollution risks and protect both the environment and human health.

Abstract

Waste is the residual result of daily human activity that is no longer wanted and that needs to go through a good treatment process so that it does not cause problems for the environment. The increase in waste generation is due to the high consumption of people and the increase in population growth. The increase in the amount of waste generation will certainly lead to an increase in the amount of waste entering the final processing site or landfill and will affect the life of the landfill itself. Therefore, the construction of the TPST is a solution to reduce the amount of waste going to the landfill and increase the amount of integrated waste processing in Ngawi Regency. This study aims to analyse the waste processing process at TPST Selopuro, Ngawi Regency and to see the results of the waste processing process at TPST Selopuro and the waste processing methods applied at TPST Selopuro. The data collection method includes primary and secondary data, and the results include data on incoming waste generation and data on the results of the waste processing process at the integrated waste management site.

Abstract

This study evaluates the effect of varying hammer strokes during the forging process using an automatic hammer machine on the hardness of ST 37 steel, ST 60 steel and automotive leaf springs. The experiments were carried out at a temperature of 600°C to analyse dimensional changes and material hardness resulting from plastic deformation. Data was obtained from thickness and hardness tests using the Vickers method. Variations in hammer strokes (0, 32 and 49 strokes) resulted in a significant increase in material hardness. For ST 37 steel the hardness increased from 137,964 kgf/mm² to 170,088 kgf/mm², for ST 60 steel from 158,781 kgf/mm² to 172,56 kgf/mm² and for automotive leaf springs from 198,442 kgf/mm² to 241,756 kgf/mm². This improvement is attributed to the strain hardening mechanism, which induces the accumulation of dislocations in the microstructure of the material, thereby increasing its resistance to further deformation. The variation in hammer strokes also influenced the changes in material thickness, with different levels of deformation depending on the mechanical properties of each material. ST 60 steel showed a more controlled deformation response compared to ST 37 steel, while automotive leaf springs showed greater deformation due to their more ductile nature. These results emphasise that forging process parameters, such as the number of hammer strokes, play a crucial role in enhancing the mechanical properties of materials to meet specific engineering application requirements.

Abstract

Increased activity in shopping centres generates liquid waste that has the potential to pollute the environment if not properly managed. The assessment was carried out by measuring the efficiency of the wastewater treatment plant in treating wastewater quality parameters such as Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Total Suspended Solids (TSS) and pH in accordance with the quality standards set by the government. The research methodology included field observations, laboratory analyses and interviews with STP managers. The results showed that the results of the wastewater quality standard test at the wastewater treatment plant of Mall Y had met the domestic wastewater quality standard, but Mall X had parameters that did not meet the quality standard. Factors such as the level of efficiency and treatment capacity of the STP and the level of maintenance of the equipment can significantly affect performance. These findings are expected to provide a reference for shopping centre managers to improve wastewater management and comply with applicable environmental regulations, as well as contribute to sustainable environmental management.

Abstract

This study investigated the effect of varying heat treatment on the hardness of expeller arm digesters. Wear is a surface failure that can alter the surface profile and affect the performance of components. This is due to the release of particles from the surface of the material and the low hardness of the Expeller Arm Digester which is made from low carbon steel with a carbon content of 0.189%. One method of increasing its hardness is through heat treatment in the form of a hardening process. The study investigated hardening using different holding times (25, 30 and 35 minutes) and cooling media (water, brine and oil). Vickers hardness tests were then carried out on both the original expeller arm digester samples and the treated samples.  The best results were obtained with a 35 minute holding time and water cooling, giving a hardness of 548.12 VHN and an influence percentage of 99.45%. The lowest hardness of 276.76 VHN and 0.7% influence percentage was observed with a holding time of 35 minutes and oil cooling. The microstructure affects the hardness of the steel, the steel with a higher martensite content will cause an increase in the hardness of the steel.

Abstract

Noise pollution from construction projects is a critical issue, especially in high-density areas such as the ASN 2 housing projects in IKN. In this study, noise levels were measured at 29 predetermined points using a Sound Level Meter (SLM) during three time intervals to assess variations in noise intensity. Noise mapping was performed using the Surfer 24 application to visualise the spatial distribution of noise and identify areas exceeding the noise threshold of 85 dB, as regulated by Permenaker No. 5/2018. The results showed that several locations exceeded the permissible exposure limits, with Daily Noise Dose (DND) values exceeding 100%, and these areas were classified as hazardous. Mitigation measures include technical controls (equipment modifications and noise barriers), administrative controls (shift rotation and warning signs) and personal protective equipment (PPE) such as earplugs. These measures aim to protect the health of workers and reduce the risk of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL).

Abstract

The Drinking Water Safety Plan (WSP) is a systematic approach to ensuring the quality and safety of the community's drinking water. With increasing challenges such as contamination of raw water sources, climate change, and population growth, the development of WSPs is critical to protecting public health from the risks of waterborne diseases. In addition, the lack of guidance in the development of RPAMs indicates that clear documents and training are critical to the successful implementation of WSPs. The process of developing a WSP document involves four main stages: preparation, risk analysis system, management and communication, and feedback. Each stage is designed to help identify and manage risks that may affect the quality of water the community receives. Stakeholder involvement and clear guidance are critical to the successful implementation of the WSP. Through this approach, the WSP is expected to increase community access to safe and quality drinking water in line with the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6.1 target to achieve universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all by 2030.
