Abstract

Lithocarpus Bl. (1826) is here considered to include the following genera: Synaedrys Lindl. (1836), Cyclobalanus (Endl.) Oersted (1867, p.p.),and Pasania (Miq.) Oersted (1867, p.p.).In Malesia 104 species are recognized, of which 25 are new to science and 7 are new combinations.Apart from these there are 10 more species which are considered as doubtful,as from the specimens so far examined it is difficult to decide their correct status. Pasania littoralis (Bl.) Oersted (basionym: Quercus littoralis Bl.)is excluded from the genus, and the species has been reidentified by Dr. A.J.G.H.Kostermans (Bogor) as Atuna scabra (Hassk.)Kosterm.In Malesia most species of Lithocarpus may be distinguished from those of Castanopsis by the ridged inner surface of their bark, uniseriate and multiseriate wood-rays,spiral arrangement of leaves and bud-scales,and by their cupule which always encloses one fruit only, and which are solitary or in dichasial clusters along the rachis, possessing interseminal cupule segments and a scattered pattern of vascularization

Abstract

1. In this paper a total of 153 species of Lauraceae (not including the 96 species reduced to synonymy) are discussed. 2. New species are described in Alseodaphne (1), Beilschmiedia (6), Cinna in.omM.7n (23), Cryptocarya (3), Endiandra (3), Lindera (1), Litsea (24), Persea (2) and Phoebe (4). 3. New combinations are proposed in Beilschmiedia (2), Endiandra (1) and Litsea (3). 4. New names are coined for species of Beilschmiedia (1), Cinnamomum (2)and Litsea (2). 5. Reductions are made in Actinodaphne (5), Alseodaphne (1), Beilschmiedia.(5), Cinnamomum (45), Endiandra (3), Lindera,(1),Litsea -(11),Machilus(1), Neolitsea (3),Persea (2), Phoebe (4), Tetradenm (3) and Tetranthera (11). 6. Beilschmiedia maingayi Hook, f., Cinnamomum siibavenium Miq., Litsea artocarpifolia Gamble and L. castanea Hook. f. are recorded for the first time for Java.

Abstract

In the light of recent monographic studies it has been found necessary to augment and revise to some extent the treatment of Javanese Pandanaceae in Backer & Bakhuizen van den Brink's "Flora of Java". Several name changes are suggested and some species omitted by these authors are enumerated. Notes on various species of different origin now cultivated in the Hortus Bogoriensis are also included. Pandanus sect. Multispina Fagerlind is reduced to a subsection of Pandanus sect. Rykia.

Abstract

There are only two species of Mangifera, M. duperreana Pierre from Indochina and M. lagenifera Griff, from Malay Peninsula and Sumatra, which were described to have flowers with 10 (—12) stamens, of which 5 (or 6) are fertile. In the latest monograph of the genus by Mukherji (in Lloydia 12,1949: 73 — 136), they were placed in two different sections (without naming the sections). According to him, the floral morphology of these two species shows that they "possess the most primitive feature in the genus (pentacyclic flowers)" (cf. J. Linn. Soc. Bot. 55, 1953: 75). In the course of revising this genus for the Flora Malesiana, a new species having flowers with also ten stamens was discovered, which has been named and described here as Mangifera decandra (= ten-stamened; in Gk: deca-, ten; andro-, male) ; its epithet alludes to the significant number of stamens.

The genus Hymenodictyon is a genus of often large, often deciduous trees which is widely distributed over the African and Asian-Malesian tropics, with 11 species recorded for Madagascar.

Abstract

The anatomy of leaves, twigs, wood and seedling of Kostermansia Soegeng is described. A comparison with some species of Coelostegia and Durio indicates the close affinities between the three taxa, but also shows some differences in leaf anatomy, probably valuable for diagnostic purposes. The stomata in Kostermansia show a very remarkable arrangement in circles around the insertions of the scales.

This is the report of a trip in 1968 conducted by Dr. M. Jacobs of the Rijksherbarium, Leiden, Netherlands, and Dr. B. Prijanto of the Forest Research Institute, Bogor, Indonesia. In April 1968 while I was botanising in the Fourth Division of Sarawak, I was shown by Mr. David Senada, District Forest Officer, Bintulu, a tall fan palm growing by the new Bintulu to Miri road, about 15 km from Bintulu.

Abstract

An illustrated description of Triposporium novoguineensei Rifai sp. nov. is presented based on a specimen collected at Garaina, New Guinea.A special visitor award from the Australian Government enabled me to attend the 42nd Australian and New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Science (ANZAAS) Congress held in August 1970 in Port Moresby (Territory of Papua and New Guinea), and to participate in a botanical and agricultural post-congress tour around the Territory. The ample opportunity to collect fungi during this tour was fully utilized and a specimen which appeared to represent an undescribed species of Triposporium was found in Garaina Tea Estate, Garaina, Territory of Papua.
