Abstract

Yūsuf al-Qarḍāwī and Ahmad Hassan are prominent scholars who have an essential role in the development of Islam. These two figures have extraordinary thoughts in the fields of hadith, tafsir, and fiqh. Yūsuf al-Qardhawi's thoughts on the issue of usury are different from Ahmad Hassan's thoughts. This research aims to determine the differences and similarities in the thoughts of the two figures. The research method used is library study; the data sources come from articles, books, and other readings. The analysis results in this study show that in their thinking, both figures agree that the law of usury is haram. However, according to Yūsuf al-Qardhawi, it can be considered usury if everything contains an additional amount that exceeds the original amount without exception. At the same time, Ahmad Hassan's usury only occurs in matters of borrowing and lending. Apart from that, something where there is an excess in an amount is not included in usury.

Abstract

Contemporary approaches to Qur'anic interpretation have often been criticized for their perceived excesses and controversial methodologies. This research explores al-Qardhawi’s concept of Qur'anic hermeneutics as an alternative method for a balanced and moderate approach to contemporary Qur'anic reading. Al-Qardhawi’s methodology integrates textual, socio-historical, and contextual approaches with modern scientific disciplines, providing interpretive flexibility that remains rooted in maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah while preserving the authority of the Qur'anic text. This study employs a descriptive qualitative methodology, analyzing al-Qardhawi’s hermeneutical concepts through his primary works, supported by secondary sources such as books and journal articles. The findings reveal that the Qur'anic text must be interpreted in alignment with the linguistic norms of its revelation, employing a linguistic approach alongside careful consideration of siyāq (context). Maqāṣid serves as a crucial instrument to validate the meanings of verses and contextualize them for contemporary realities. While the socio-historical approach is significant, al-Qardhawi maintains that the universality of Qur'anic lafāẓ (expressions) transcends the context of revelation and remains applicable to subsequent circumstances. Integration with various scientific disciplines is deemed essential for meaningful interpretation. Additionally, the insights of the Ṣaḥābah (Companions) and early scholars are valuable for comparing and reinforcing interpretative understanding.

Abstract

This study critically examines the intertextual patterns in Tafsīr al-Jāmi‘ li Aḥkām al-Qur’ān by al-Qurṭubī, focusing on its relationship with earlier works, particularly Aḥkām al-Qur’ān by Ibn al-‘Arabī. Intertextuality in this context refers to external influences and connections between texts, exploring how al-Qurṭubī engaged with, borrowed from, and elaborated on previous tafsīr literature. The research employs a descriptive-analytical method grounded in Julia Kristeva’s intertextual theory and is conducted through library research. The findings reveal distinct intertextual patterns, with the most prominent expansion pattern. This pattern involves quoting source texts and enriching them through elaboration and additional reasoning, demonstrating al-Qurṭubī’s intellectual engagement and methodological rigor. These results highlight the dynamic interplay between tradition and originality in al-Qurṭubī’s work, offering new insights into the intertextual practices in classical Islamic scholarship.

Abstract

This paper examines the perspectives of Sayyid Quṭb, Aḥmad Muṣṭafā al-Marāghī, Muḥammad ‘Abduh, and Wahbah al-Zuḥaylī regarding the meaning of al-maysir and its contextualization in contemporary settings. The study stems from the issue of modern prize-based draws, which share characteristics with the concept of al-maysir. The research aims to present a balanced interpretation to address these challenges. It explores the relationship between prize-based draws and al-maysir as outlined in Surah al-Baqarah [2]: 219 and Surah al-Mā’idah [5]: 90-91. A thematic tafsir approach is employed to capture the exegetical views, gathering related verses under a single theme for comprehensive analysis. The findings indicate that, according to Sayyid Quṭb, Aḥmad Muṣṭafā al-Marāghī, Muḥammad ‘Abduh, and Wahbah al-Zuḥaylī, not all forms of prize-based draws are deemed haram from a Quranic perspective. As technology has evolved, prize-based draws manifest in various forms, offline and online. The study concludes that draws associated with al-maysir—particularly those involving betting, fostering enmity, or causing negligence of religious duties—are impermissible. Among these exegetes, only Muḥammad ‘Abduh, in Tafsir al-Manār, specifically discusses maysir al-yanāṣīb, or lottery gambling, which closely resembles modern prize-based draws. Although contemporary draws may occur without direct interaction and may seem less prone to causing animosity compared to pre-Islamic gambling practices, they still involve elements of gambling as they represent the unjust acquisition of wealth without legitimate exchange or benefit.

Abstract

تناقش هذه الدراسة الآيات المتعلقة بالتعجب الواردة في القرآن الكريم. بما أن القرآن هو كتاب مقدس يتمتع بأدب رفيع، فإن دراسة القرآن تتطلب منهجًا لغويًا، وفي هذه الحالة، الأسلوبية. يمتلك القرآن الكريم مجموعة متنوعة من الأساليب اللغوية في التعبير عن معنى التعجب. في الواقع، إذا كان التعبير عن جملة التعجب يعتمد فقط على صيغة التعجب مثل "ما أفعل" و "فعل به"، فإن الأدب اللغوي للقرآن لا يتم الوصول إليه بشكل كامل. تتمثل مزايا دراسة أسلوب التعجب في الكتاب المقدس للقرآن الكريم في عدة نقاط. أولًا، يعكس القرآن الله بكل مخلوقاته التي لها مكانة تستحق الإعجاب. ثانيًا، يعد دليلاً على أن القرآن يمتلك أدبًا لغويًا ديناميكيًا، وليس ثابتًا. ثالثًا، هو دليل على أن القرآن يحتوي على أوصاف متعددة في طرق التعبير - في هذه الحالة - التي تظهر معنى التعجب، وفي نفس الوقت يجب أن يتم فهم معنى التعجب بشكل غير موحد، بل من المهم أيضًا الانتباه إلى سياق الجملة.
