Abstract

Speaking is one of the most challenging skills for junior high school students, as it requires fluency, pronunciation accuracy, confidence, and expressive communication. Many students struggle with speaking English due to limited exposure, fear of making mistakes, and lack of engaging learning methods. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of storytelling in improving the speaking skills of eighth-grade students, particularly in terms of pronunciation, fluency, confidence, and expressive delivery. Using a qualitative research approach, this study involved 20 eighth-grade students with limited English-speaking experience who participated in a five-day storytelling program, where they practiced speaking in small groups guided by tutors. Data were collected through pre- and postobservations, video recordings, and student reflections. The results indicate that storytelling significantly improved students’ speaking abilities, as they became more fluent, confident, and expressive in their storytelling performances. Initially, students exhibited hesitation and struggled with pronunciation, but by the final session, they demonstrated greater clarity, natural fluency, and expressive body language. Peer collaboration and tutor support played a crucial role in fostering students' engagement and reducing anxiety. Despite some early challenges, students ultimately found storytelling enjoyable and beneficial for their speaking development. These findings suggest that storytelling should be integrated into English learning as an interactive and effective method to improve students' oral communication skills, with further research needed to explore its long-term impact and its effectiveness compared to other speaking-based teaching methods.

Abstract

The study titled "The Effectiveness of the TPRC Strategy in Reading Comprehension Learning at SMA Negeri 1 Tangse" aims to evaluate whether there is a significant difference in reading comprehension skills between students taught using the TPRC strategy and those taught without it, as well as to assess the effectiveness of the TPRC strategy in improving students' reading comprehension skills at SMA Negeri 1 Tangse. This study was conducted on December 24, 2024, during the second semester of the 2024/2025 academic year. The research method used was an experimental design with a control group pretest-posttest design. The study population included all tenth-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Tangse, totaling 64 students, and the sampling technique was simple random sampling. The instrument used was a multiple-choice reading comprehension skills test. The instrument's content validity was tested, and the instrument’s reliability yielded an alpha value of 0.811 using the Iteman program, indicating a high level of reliability. Data analysis was performed using a t-test at a 5% significance level after meeting the assumptions of normality and homogeneity. The results showed that the t-test on the posttest scores of reading comprehension skills between the control group and the experimental group yielded a th value of 3.163, which is greater than the tt value of 2.00 (3.163 > 2.00), with a p-value of 0.002 (0.002 < 0.05 = significant) and degrees of freedom (df) of 62. This indicates a significant difference in reading comprehension skills between the two groups. The average improvement score in reading comprehension skills in the experimental group was 6.19, while the control group showed only a 2.12-point increase. This study concludes that the TPRC strategy is more effective in improving students’ reading comprehension skills than learning without the TPRC strategy. The researcher recommends that schools integrate the TPRC strategy regularly in reading comprehension classes and develop teacher training on the implementation of this strategy to achieve more optimal learning outcomes.

Abstract

Film is one of the most effective media for preaching in conveying moral and religious messages, including in the context of Islamic preaching. In this case, film acts as a means of communication that can reach a wider audience. One interesting example is the film "Merindu Cahaya de Amstel," which combines a love story with Islamic values conveyed through narratives and characters that are relevant to everyday life. This study aims to identify the preaching messages contained in the film "Merindu Cahaya de Amstel" using Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis. In this analysis, we will explore messages related to Islamic values contained in the film. This study refers to Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis theory, which includes three meanings: connotation, denotation, and myth. The method used in this study is a qualitative approach, where secondary data is collected to analyze the existing preaching messages. The results of the study show that each scene and dialogue between characters contains these three meanings, namely connotation, denotation, and myth. In this analysis, the dialogue is processed through metaphors and implied meanings, so that the real meaning can be produced. In addition, in the representation of Islamic values messages, there are three important categories: messages of faith, sharia, and morals. This research is expected to help the public in choosing films that convey positive messages. In addition, films that contain preaching messages also have the potential to provide a positive impact on the lives of their viewers.
