Abstract

The purpose of this research was to identify the Teaching of English as a Second Language (TESL) pre-service teachers’ beliefs about second language (L2) learning, to determine whether there is a significant difference in beliefs among the TESL pre-service teachers of different years of study and how these beliefs were formed. These are important as the pre-service teachers’ beliefs would have a direct influence on their practices as a teacher in future. This research was conducted with a sample size of 113 respondents using a mixed method design. Data collection is using the Belief About Language Learning Inventory, often known as BALLI approach to ensure a comprehensive understanding of individuals' beliefs. In addition, data was gathered using semi-structured interviews thus, guaranteeing a more in-depth understanding of the participants' experiences and beliefs. Descriptive statistics showed that the highest mean score was recorded for the “motivation and expectations” dimensions. The ANOVA results showed statistically significant difference in the mean scores amongst the different years of study. Interview results indicated that beliefs were dominantly influenced by social support and exposure to the L2, and intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Results of the study could inform course developers and lecturers as to which aspects of language learning and pedagogical knowledge need to be focused on in the pre-service teachers’ curriculum.

The aim of this research is to describe and find out the results of the evaluation of the implementation of electronic-based programs (Smart Auditing) at the Makassar City Inspectorate. This research uses qualitative research methods through case studies. Data collection taken with observation, interview, and documentation of directly involved informants in implementation of that activities. The process of data analysis includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. This research uses theory from the E-Auditing concept to see the level of success of electronic auditing with indicators of (1)the success of the target, (2)satisfaction to the program and (3)levels input and output. The results of the research conducted show that the implementation of the electronic-based inspection program or known as Smart Auditing at the Makassar City Inspectorate has been carried out well and has succeeded in achieving its objectives. However, there is still a need to improve facilities and infrastructure to support the achievement of goals, increase understanding in the field of Technology and Information for implementers and commitment and discipline from Regional Apparatus Organizations in the future.

Abstract

Soft skills comprise a blend of social abilities, interpersonal communication, knowledge, and character traits that enhance individuals' social and professional lives. Beyond technical expertise, soft skills are widely recognized for significantly improving employability prospects and aiding job candidates in enhancing their competitiveness during job hunting and career development. While some research projects suggest that technical knowledge is less crucial than soft skills in job interviews, other scholars argue for an equal emphasis on both to craft a comprehensive job applicant profile. This paper investigates this topic from a three-pronged perspective. First, it explores the extent to which soft skills overshadow technical knowledge in the eyes of employers in the Moroccan job market. Second, it assesses the level of engagement of Moroccan university students in learning and acquiring soft skills. Finally, it underscores the role of higher education teachers in cultivating soft skills through their instruction. This study is an exploratory endeavor that utilizes secondary data sources from scientific journals and administers questionnaires to teachers, enterprise managers, and students to unveil their attitudes in the Moroccan context. The results reveal some disparities between the existing literature and the situation in Morocco. It appears that the interest in soft skills in Morocco is still influenced more by personal and functional variables than institutional recommendations.

Abstract

This study examines the evolution of the Kama Sutra within the context of Hinduism and its subsequent misrepresentation through colonial interpretations, particularly focusing on the impact of Western scholar Sir Richard Francis Burton. Within Hinduism, the concept of Purusarthas encapsulates the foundational pursuits of human existence: Dharma, Artha, Kama, and Moksha. While Dharma, Artha, and Moksha have historically held elevated positions, Kama's significance has been marginalized over time. Originally an autonomous pillar akin to the other three, Kama underwent censorship and degradation, notably evidenced in the Manu Shastra, attributing its decline to a deviation from righteous living. The translation of the Kama Sutra into English by Burton in the 19th century propelled its misinterpretation globally, transforming it from a comprehensive guide celebrating love and fulfilment to a sensationalized sex manual. This shift obscured the text's spiritual essence and cultural context, perpetuating Orientalist stereotypes and reinforcing Western sexual fantasies. Burton's translation, influenced by colonial agendas, not only erased the agency of women but also distorted the original intentions of the text, presenting a skewed narrative that catered to Victorian ideals and patriarchal norms. This paper examines the translation, portrayal through the lens of Orientalism, and the intricate gender dynamics the Kama Sutra embodies. Employing critical frameworks of translation theory, feminist analysis, and postcolonial perspectives, this study reveals how the Kama Sutra, as a historical and sexual text, underwent transformation under the influence of Western cultural impositions. Through the prism of translation theory, the paper unravels the colonial lens shaping the Western interpretation, thereby altering the original text to fit Eurocentric ideals. The feminist analysis exposes the erasure of female agency within the text, reinforcing patriarchal norms rather than liberating women. This analysis engages post-colonial theories, notably Edward Said's Orientalism, to illuminate the intricate power dynamics entrenched in the colonial interaction. It exposes how the Western perspective imposed its cultural prism upon Eastern texts, perpetuating a dichotomy between the Occident and the Orient. This division rendered the East a subject of both fascination and apprehension, leading to a reductive depiction that obscured the multifaceted and nuanced tapestry of Eastern cultures. Additionally, the paper integrates feminist and post-colonial theories to comprehensively investigate the profound impact of this representation.

Abstract

This article explores the presence of Brazilian women artists in visual poetry on Instagram. It highlights the historical decline in recognition of women artists and the perpetuation of stereotypes that undermine their work. The article also discusses the ongoing struggle faced by female writers for recognition in the literary field. It challenges the notion that women, especially those from diverse backgrounds, are not prolific producers of poetry. The author focuses on the work of Brazilian artist Heloísa Marques as an illustrative example. Marques, an architect and visual artist, uses embroidery and collage techniques in her visual poetic compositions. The article examines her background, techniques, approach to language, and the reception of her work on Instagram. It emphasizes how social media platforms like Instagram have become spaces where women can share their work and regain recognition as poets and artists. The article sheds light on Marques's artistic contributions and the broader presence of women in visual poetry on Instagram.
