Abstract

AbstractThis qualitative research aims to explore the reading comprehension problems encountered by eleventh grade students at SMK TI Bali Global Singaraja in academic year 2023/2024 and the solutions that students do when experience reading comprehension problems in English reading. Data were collected through observation methods, semi-structured interviews, and documentation involving a purposive sample of eleventh grade students. The results of this study indicate that the reading comprehension difficulties faced by eleventh grade students of SMK TI Bali Global Singaraja are as many as 33.33% of students have difficulty in determining the main idea (3 students), 33.33% of students have difficulty in finding references (3 students), 100% of students have difficulty in understanding new vocabulary (9 students), 55.56% of students have difficulty in making conclusions (6 students), and 22.22% of students have difficulty in finding detailed information in English reading (2 students). And when students experiencing problems understanding English reading comprehension, there are several solutions that are usually carried out by eleventh grade students at SMK TI Bali Global Singraja, such as asking (asking for help) to the teacher, asking for help from friends who understand better, Rereading (repeatedly), Matching and adjusting it to the reading concept, Translating the texts first (use Google Translate or a dictionary). The findings of this study contribute to a deeper understanding of the reading comprehension challenges faced by Indonesian vocational high school students and inform the development of effective pedagogical approaches to improve their reading skills.

Abstract

This research investigates students' perceptions of using Instagram, particularly its reels feature, to support English- speaking practice in Class XI at SMK TI Bali Global Singaraja. With the growing popularity of social media among teenagers, this study aims to explore the potential of incorporating Instagram as an innovative and engaging learning tool to enhance students' English-speaking skills. A qualitative approach was employed, utilizing questionnaires and semi-structured interviews as the main data collection instruments. The study involved 20 purposively selected Class XI students. The findings reveal that most students hold a positive view of using Instagram reels to support speaking practice. They value the accessibility, convenience, and engaging content provided by Instagram Reels. Students perceive Reels as a valuable supplementary learning resource that strengthens language concepts, improves pronunciation, expands vocabulary, and builds confidence in speaking English. This study offers valuable insights for educators and practitioners on exploring social media as an innovative and contextual medium to support English language teaching.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to recognize and examine the forbidden terms present in the Balinese language as spoken in Bebetin Village. The study adopted a descriptive qualitative research, selecting three informants according to the criteria outlined by Samarin, 1967. The taboo words found in Bebetin Village are related to the Tri Hita Karana concept, namely Parahyangan, Pawongan, and Palemahan. Parahyangan refers to the relationship between humans and God as the creator and sustainer of their existence, Pawongan encompasses human interactions in the social realm, and Palemahan centers on the connection between humans and their natural surroundings. The findings revealed 46 taboo words in use within Bebetin Village, categorized into 2 terms associated with connections to God, 37 terms linked to human harmony, and 8 terms related to environmental harmony.

Abstract

In today's digital age, many students still face challenges in learning, particularly in mastering spoken English. Despite this, there's a plethora of tools available to support educational needs. Students now have access to knowledge not only through traditional books but also via smartphones, with AI-based apps emerging as a popular option in the educational landscape. This study aims to gauge student response to using the Cake AI-based application to enhance their speaking skills. Employing a mixed-method approach, the research utilized observation via the triple E rubric and interviews as data collection instruments. Participants included grade 11 students from SMA N 1 Kubutambahan. Findings suggest that this application effectively boosts student motivation and improves their speaking abilities.

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the use of English songs in Spotify to improve students’ vocabulary at seventh grade students. It was a classroom action research conducted at SMPN 1 Singaraja involving 7th grade students of class A1. Further, this research was held in two cycles. Before the implementation of English songs the mean score students vocabulary mastery was 56.25. In the first cycle, the researcher observed an enhancement in the mastery of vocabulary, with an average score of 67.18. Subsequently, in the second cycle, a notable improvement was noted in the vocabulary mastery of compared to the preceding cycle, with an average score of 79.84. These findings underscore the profound impact of utilizing English songs on the enhancement of vocabulary mastery among seventh-grade students. These findings indicate a convincing enhancement in vocabulary mastery due to the implementation of English songs. Moreover, students exhibited heightened enjoyment, active participation, motivation, and engagement during lessons incorporating English songs for vocabulary learning. In summary, the integration of English songs via Spotify improved vocabulary mastery among seventh-grade students learning English.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the use of the Think-Pair-Share strategy by teacher to enhance students’ speaking skills at SMP Negeri 1 Karawang Barat. A descriptive qualitative method was employed to collect data through classroom observations and interviews with teachers and students. Participants included VIII C students at SMP Negeri 1 Karawang Barat who engaged in Think-Pair-Share sessions during the research period. The findings indicate that implementing the Think-Pair-Share strategy significantly improves students’ speaking skills through small group discussion activities. Students demonstrated improvements in verbal abilities, the ability to articulate ideas, and enhanced confidence in public speaking. Data analysis also revealed that social interaction among students when using this strategy helped deepen their understanding of learning materials and fostered collaboration among classmates. This study highlights the importance of active learning strategies in enhancing students’ speaking skills in secondary schools. The implications of this research suggest that integrating the Think-Pair-Share strategy can positively contribute to the development of language learning curricula in schools by promoting active student participation, improving their speaking skills, and facilitating collaborative learning.

Abstract

Ttudy discussed the contribution or effect offered by the use of drama as a technique in teaching in the EFL classroom, whether it is a good or bad contribution. Through a literature review, several scientific articles were used in this study, of which selected scientific journals from 2000 to 2020 which were obtained from official sources or educational websites. First, the data collection technique is carried out by analyzing the related studies/articles that have been done previously. Second, the data that has been obtained from several scientific articles containing the same research is managed by paraphrasing technique in order to obtain valid data. The result in this study shows that the use of drama has a good contribution in improving language skills, motivation and good character building for students but also drama cannot be applied to all student characters

Abstract

English is very important to master because nowadays almost all industries are looking for people who have English skills so they can talk to foreigners very fluently. Students, especially students majoring in English, really need to master it. One way that can improve speaking skills is to watch English movies. This study aims to analyze students' perceptions of the use of English films in improving speaking skills at Ganesha University of Education. This study used a qualitative research design with data collection using a questionnaire distributed to 4 classes in semester 4. The results showed that students' perceptions of English films improved their speaking skills. Through English films, they learn new vocabulary and how to pronounce it which they can hear from the characters in the film.

Abstract

This study focuses on improving the ability to write negotiation texts for grade X A students of Bali Mandara State High School through the application of the Cooperative Learning model. Motivated by the problem of low mastery of negotiation text writing skills, this study uses a Classroom Action Research (PTK) approach with teachers and 29 students as subjects. The results showed that the application of Cooperative Learning effectively improved students' ability to write negotiation texts. In the first cycle, the average student score reached 78.15 with 65.52% of students achieving KKM. Cycle II showed a significant improvement, with an average score of 84.46 and 100% of students achieving KKM. The learning process is well structured, engages students in groups, motivates them to seek ideas outside the classroom, and encourages active participation and creativity.

Abstract

This research was driven by the reduced learning ability and interest of students in learning to write procedural texts. This research is a qualitative descriptive research. The aim of this research is to describe the learning steps, writing skills using the Titiz Craft YouTube Channel, and the obstacles experienced in the learning text procedures for class XI students at SMA Negeri 1 Woha. The data collection techniques used in this research were observation, interviews and documentation. The results of this research show that the learning process at SMA Negeri 1 Woha is carried out face-to-face and the Titiz Craft YouTube Channel has been implemented as a learning medium. Students' abilities in text learning procedures via the Titiz Craft YouTube Channel were said to be successful with an average score of 80. One of the obstacles that faced students during learning was that students had difficulty using standard language and vocabulary.
