Abstract

This study explores the role of Javanese culture in shaping communication patterns among communication studies students in a university setting. Javanese culture, which is rich in values such as harmony, respect, and empathy, plays an important role in influencing interactions among Javanese communication students. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through observation and in-depth interviews with Javanese communication studies students at a university in Java. The findings indicate that Javanese communication students tend to engage in subtle communication and avoid direct confrontation, reflecting their efforts to maintain harmony in everyday interactions. The formal and respectful communication patterns observed in their interactions with lecturers or senior students also highlight their respect for social hierarchy, which is deeply rooted in Javanese culture. Furthermore, Javanese students demonstrate adaptability within multicultural environments by adjusting their communication styles without compromising their cultural values. Despite technological advancements and the influence of social media, traditional Javanese cultural values remain present in their online interactions, indicating cultural resilience amid modernization. This study emphasizes the importance of cultural education in preserving Javanese cultural identity among students and in enhancing understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity on campus. This book offers insights into local cultural dynamics in the context of higher education and their relevance in an increasingly interconnected global era.

Abstract

This article examines how Islamic Cyber Culture can reduce feelings of inferiority and the spread of cancel culture in virtual spaces. In Indonesia, cancel culture has increasingly affected individuals through online rejection and public petitions, while legally remaining largely unregulated. Psychologically, this phenomenon is often rooted in inferiority feelings that encourage destructive digital behavior. Using a qualitative case study approach, the study analyzes relevant cases and literature through content analysis. The findings identify four Qur’anic components of Islamic Cyber Culture: justice and equality, ethical speech and interaction, the importance of knowledge and reflection, and avoiding slander and backbiting (fitnah and ghibah). The study also highlights five urgent challenges in Indonesia: social pressure and unrealistic expectations, rapid judgment and cancellation, self-censorship, polarization and weak dialogue, and technology-driven character assassination. These challenges can be minimized by reinforcing Islamic Cyber Culture through positive narratives, digital ethics awareness, and public education, ultimately fostering a more inclusive and wise online environment.

Abstract

The study highlights the positive impacts of technology use, including easier access to information, maintaining communication with friends who live far away, broadening knowledge, and supporting academic communication and learning. However, negative effects also occur, such as a decline in the quality of personal communication, limited nonverbal communication skills, poor academic concentration, and dependence on technology for social interaction. It is recommended to manage technology use wisely in campus environments, enhance digital awareness, and encourage activities that require face-to-face communication such as group discussions and collaborative projects to help students develop social skills and build better interpersonal relationships.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of social media on family communication patterns in the digital era. This research employs a quantitative approach through a literature review, involving data collection from scholarly sources and previous studies. The development of information technology, particularly social media, has helped people work and communicate more effectively. Social media enables interaction and social relationships, and today almost all human activities are supported by digital technology. Individuals engage in digital exchanges through digital symbols. Advances in technology and communication media have also transformed family interactions as well as other sectors such as the economy, politics, education, and culture. The physical dimension of family life has increasingly been replaced by virtual realities, and family interactions in the digital era depend heavily on information technology. Therefore, this study seeks to test the impact of social media on family communication patterns in the digital era. The findings indicate that social media shapes digital family communication patterns by making it easier for every age group within the family to use social media. In addition, when children are at home, parents are not able to fully control the flow of information received by their children. Communication between family members particularly between parents and children tends to be less smooth and unbalanced, which also encourages individualistic behavior as family members become preoccupied with their mobile phones.

Abstract

This journal discusses that digital culture plays a significant role in the daily lives of Generation Z students in the Communication Studies Department at UINSU. The positive experiences of using communication technology include ease of interaction and access to information, but there are also risks such as the spread of misinformation and negative content. It is important to understand the meaning of digital cultural communication through framing theory and a phenomenological approach so that Generation Z can use technology responsibly and intelligently. This study analyzes the digital cultural behavior of Generation Z students in the Communication Studies Department at UINSU. It employs a descriptive qualitative approach using in-depth interviews. The findings indicate that Generation Z students have diverse motives for using digital communication, resulting in both positive and negative experiences. Digital technology enables them to stay connected with others over long distances, yet it also carries risks such as the spread of false information.
