Abstract

This study explores the role of Javanese culture on communication patterns among communication science students in campus environments. Javanese culture, rich in values such as harmony, respect, and empathy, plays a pivotal role in shaping interactions among Javanese communication science students. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, data was gathered through observations and in-depth interviews with Javanese communication science students at one of campuses in Java. Findings reveal that Javanese communication science students tend to engage in subtle communication and avoid direct conflicts, reflecting their efforts to maintain harmony in daily interactions. The formal and respectful communication patterns observed in their interactions with professors or senior peers also underscore their reverence for social hierarchies ingrained in Javanese culture. Furthermore, Javanese students demonstrate adeptness in adapting to multicultural environments, adjusting their communication styles without compromising their cultural values. Despite technological advances and the influence of social media, traditional Javanese cultural values persist in their online interactions, indicating cultural resilience amidst modernization. This study highlights the significance of cultural education in preserving Javanese cultural identity among students and enhancing understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity on campus. It provides insights into local cultural dynamics within the context of higher education and its relevance in an increasingly interconnected global era.

Abstract

This article aims to explore the values of Islamic Cyberculture in mitigating inferiority and cancel culture in virtual spaces. The phenomenon of cancel culture and inferiority is an interesting issue. In Indonesia, this issue has affected people's personal lives, from rejection to petitions. This is certainly legitimate because there are no regulations governing the criminal offence of cancel culture. However, psychologically, it is found that this culture arises because of the inferiority of individuals so that they make destructive movements. The urgency of this research is to rebuild Islamic Cyberculture in overcoming problems in social media. This article uses a qualitative method with a case study approach. Primary data in this research are case examples and articles that are reviewed using literature review techniques. After the data is collected, the author will analyse the data using content analysis techniques. The results show that there are at least four components of Islamic Cyberculture in the Qur'an, namely: Principles of Justice and Equality, Ethics of Speaking and Interacting, Importance of Knowledge and Reflection and Avoiding Fitnah and Ghibah. Field facts show that there are at least five urgent challenges regarding inferiority and cancel culture in Indonesia, namely: 1) Social Pressure and Unrealistic Expectations, 2) Cancel Culture and Quick Judgement, 3) Self-Censorship and Restrictions on Freedom of Expression, 4) Polarisation and Lack of Constructive Dialogue and 5) Use of Technology for Character Destruction. All of these problems can be minimised by Islamic Cyberculture that continues to voice positive messages, build awareness of digital ethics, and educate the public. Islamic Cyberculture brings a grand narrative in restoring a more inclusive and wise virtual environment.

Abstract

Research shows the positive impact of using technology, including easy access to information, maintaining communication with distant friends, broadening horizons, and supporting communication and academic learning. However, negative impacts also occur, such as reduced quality of personal communication, lack of non-verbal communication skills, poor academic concentration, and dependence on technology for social interaction. It is recommended to use technology in the campus environment, increase digital awareness and encourage activities that require face-to-face communication, such as group discussions and collaborative projects, to help students develop social skills and create better interpersonal relationships.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to determine the influence of social media on family communication patterns in the digital era. This research uses quantitative research methods through literature reviews, namely collecting data, both from library materials and also previous research. The development of information technology, especially social media, has helped people work and communicate. Social media enables social interactions and relationships. All human activities are now supported by digital technology. Every individual has digital exchange through digital symbols. The development of technology and communication media will also change family interactions and other fields such as economics, politics, education and culture. The physical dimension of the family has been replaced by the real world. Family interaction in the digital era relies on information technology. Therefore, the research wants to examine the influence of social media on family communication patterns in the digital era. The results of this research, namely the influence of social media on family communication patterns in the digital era, are where social media influences digital family communication patterns which makes it easier for every age group in the family to use social media, when children are at home, parents cannot also fully control the flow of information received by the child. Communication that takes place between family members, parents and children is not smooth and unbalanced, and this also makes people in the family become individualistic because they are busy with their cell phones.

Abstract

This journal discusses that digital culture has a significant role in the daily life of Generation Z students of UINSU Communication Sciences. Positive experiences using communication technology include the ease of interacting and obtaining information, but there are also risks such as the spread of false information and negative content. It is important to understand the meaning of the use of digital cultural communication through framing theory and phenomenological approaches so that Generation Z can use technology responsibly and intelligently. This study discusses the analysis of digital cultural behavior in Generation Z of UINSU Communication Science students. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with an in-depth interview method. The results of the study show that the motives for using Generation Z's digital communication are varied, with positive and negative experiences. The use of digital technology allows them to connect with people remotely, but it also carries risks such as the spread of false information.
