Abstract

Pitaya (as known as red dragon fruit in Indonesia) and honey contain high polyphenols and flavo-noids as the main source of antioxidants. Antioxidant compounds in pitaya and honey can reduce systolic and diastolic blood pressure. The aim of this study were to determine the characteristics of gender, age, and Body Mass Index of hypertensive respondents and determine the effect of the combination of pitaya juice and honey on the reduction in blood pressure and Body Mass Index for geriatric hypertensive respondents at the Puskesmas Sempaja Samarinda. This research used quasi-experimental method and data was taken with pre-test and post-test procedures. The data of respondent characteristics shown are women got the highest percentage of 58.9%, middle age of 57.8% and normal weight category (BMI) of 40.7%. The results of descriptive analysis in sys-tolic and diastolic blood pressure from pre-test are 138.64 mmHg and 82.28 mmHg, the post-test are 132.55 mmHg and 77.85 mmHg and decrease in the Body Mass Index of 0.22 kg/m2. The conclusion of this research is the combination of pitaya juice and honey was able to reduce the blood pressure and Body Mass Index

Abstract

Diarrhea remains a major gastrointestinal health problem, highlighting the need for safe and effective alternative therapies, including those derived from traditional medicinal plants. This review aims to evaluate the antidiarrheal potential of various medicinal plants based on preclinical evidence. A narrative review approach was employed by searching the Google search engine using the keyword “antidiarrheal” for scientific publications published between 2018 and 2025. The included literature consisted of preclinical studies using in vivo and/or in vitro approaches. The medicinal plants reviewed included Piper betle L., Eugenia polyantha, Zingiber officinale, Mangifera indica, Psidium guajava L., Curcuma longa L., Pithecellobium jiringa, Crescentia cujete L., fermented Hylocereus polyrhizus, Centella asiatica, Pometia pinnata, Moringa oleifera L., Strobilanthes crispus, and Cuminum cyminum. The findings indicate that these plants exhibit antidiarrheal activity through multiple mechanisms, including antibacterial effects against enteric pathogens, inhibition of intestinal motility, antispasmodic effects, and reduction of intestinal fluid secretion, which are closely associated with the presence of secondary metabolites such as flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids, terpenoids, and phenolic compounds. Several plants demonstrated antidiarrheal efficacy comparable to loperamide at specific doses, suggesting their potential as alternative antidiarrheal agents. However, further studies involving extract standardization, identification of active marker compounds, safety evaluation, and clinical trials are required to confirm their efficacy and safety in humans.

Abstract

Indonesia is the world’s third-largest producer of coffee, behind Brazil and Vietnam. The content of coffee fruit skin compounds is able to protect the skin from UV rays, slow down the premature aging process and improve microcirculation in the blood. This study sough to ascertain whether differences in HPMC concentration in peel off gel mask formulations of fruit peel extract from arabica coffee (Coffea arabica) affect the requirements of physical properties and physical stability of good preparations, and to determine the optimal formula that meets the physical properties and stability requirements for the development of coffee fruit peel-based cosmeics. The sample was arabica coffee fruit peel powder which was made into a thick extract by maceration extraction method using 96% ethanol solvent. The peel off gel mask is formulated into 3 formulas with concentrations of Formulation 1 (HPMC 2%), Formulation 2 (HPMC 2.5%) and Formulation 3 (HPMC 3%). The three peel off gel mask formulas produced were then compared with their physical properties based on days 0, 7, 14, 21 and 28 with organoleptis testing, homogeneity test, pH test, dispersion test and drying time. The results showed that the peel off gel preparation of arabica coffee fruit peel extract (Coffea arabica) had a brown color with a characteristic smell of coffee and Formulation 1, Formulation 2 and Formulation 3 respectively had a slightly viscous, somewhat viscous and viscous consistency. All three formulas have an average pH of 4.5-5.2, Formulation 1 has the greatest dispersion and drying time values compared to Formulation 2 and Formulation 3.

Abstract

Abstract

Indonesia’s floral biodiversity provides significant opportunities for researchers to explore secondary metabolites as potential candidates for novel anticancer drugs, particularly for blood cancer (leukemia). This study aimed to analyze the chemical constituents of jamblang (Syzygium cumini) that exhibit favorable potential and conformations as leukemia agents targeting the PERK receptor. The method employed was an in-silico study based on molecular docking using AutoDock Tools, followed by visualization with BIOVIA Discovery Studio Visualizer, as well as pharmacokinetic and toxicity (ADMET) analyses using pkCSM. The molecular docking results demonstrated that Lycopene was the best-performing test ligand, exhibiting the lowest binding energy ΔGbind value of −12.34 kcal/mol. In addition, one test ligand, Myricetin-3-O-rhamnoside, showed potential as a biomarker compound with a ΔGbind value of −8.02 kcal/mol and may be utilized for further research. Meanwhile, the native ligand GSK2606414, used as the positive control, showed a ΔGbind value of −12.11 kcal/mol. Pharmacokinetic and toxicity studies were conducted on the best-performing test ligands obtained from the molecular docking analysis. Based on the ADMET analysis, six test ligands exhibited the most favorable pharmacokinetic and toxicity profiles. Therefore, it can be concluded that jamblang (Syzygium cumini) has promising potential as a source of anticancer agents for leukemia.
