Abstract

Environmental problems are increasingly showing an increase. This indicates that environmental policies have not been successful. Exploitation of natural resources and the environment has led to a worsening of the environmental quality of natural resources, particularly in terms of monitoring and developing living mechanisms. Environmental protection and management based on Article 1 point (2) of Law Number 32 of 2009 concerning Environmental Protection and Management (UUPPLH) is a systematic and integrated effort made to preserve environmental functions and prevent environmental pollution and/or damage that includes planning, utilization, control, maintenance, supervision, and law enforcement. Given the complexity of environmental protection and management and the problems that are cross-sectoral and regional in nature, in the implementation of development it is necessary to plan and implement environmental protection and management that are in line with the principles of sustainable development, namely balanced economic, socio-cultural and environmental development as the pillars interdependent and mutually reinforcing one another. In its implementation it involves various parties, as well as strictness in complying with environmental law. It is hoped that with the participation of various parties and supervision and compliance with laws that can really be enforced, it can be used as a common reference for managing the environment in a wise way so that the goals of sustainable development can really be implemented in the field and not stop at mere slogans.

Abstract

One of the damage to the coastline can be triggered by the disruption of the natural balance in the coastal area. Overcoming coastal abrasion requires comprehensive, sustainable and involving all parties. Various efforts have been made by the Bengkalis Regency Government. This qualitative descriptive research was conducted in September 2022 using field survey methods and literature studies. From the results of the discussion, it can be concluded as follows: 1. Efforts to overcome abrasion through the construction of coastal protection, only 23.7% of the beaches affected by abrasion have been realized and have not run optimally and 2. Efforts to plant mangroves on peat soil have not been successful and mangrove planting on clay Clay has not found a planting technique that can prevent mangrove seedlings from being carried away by currents or sea waves.

Abstract

Land cover in forested area has changed rapidly. This study aims to determine the existing conditions and changes in land cover in the Sungai Pulai Protection Forest Area on Bintan Island, Riau Islands in the last 13 (thirteen) years from 2009 – 2022 along with the contributing factors. This research was conducted using survey and interview methods. Data analysis consisted of map analysis and descriptive analysis. The results showed that there were 9 (nine) classes of land cover in the Sungai Pulai Protected Forest area in the period 2009 – 2022, namely secondary forest, shrubs, plantations, dry land agriculture, dry land agriculture mixed with shrubs, open land, bodies of water, settlements and airport. The most extensive land cover in the Sungai Pulai Protection Forest is palm oil plantations covering an area of 241.51 ha (32.12%), followed by dryland agriculture mixed with shrubs covering an area of 221.19 ha (29.42%), settlements covering 120.18 ha (15.99%), and dryland agriculture area of 71.99 ha (9.58%). Changes in land cover are caused by community activities in forest areas including agriculture, settlements, illegal logging, forest fires, and palm oil plantations by companies. The increase in these activities was caused by weak law enforcement, increasing population, economic needs of the community and lack of public awareness about the importance of forest functions.

Abstract

The monitoring of the quality of industrial wastewater in Riau Province has been continuously carried out by the competent authorities. However, environmental conditions continue to deteriorate, especially environmental pollution caused by industrial wastewater. SNI ISO 14001 environmental management system is needed to support these activities. After researching, one of the causes that not many people know about is the competence of the laboratory for testing industrial wastewater samples. The report of test results issued by the laboratory is the key to determining the content of environmental pollutants, whether it exceeds the waste water quality standard or not. This condition determines whether the industry has violated the rules or not. Laboratory competence can be seen from the accreditation certificate owned by the laboratory. Accreditation is given by KAN (National Accreditation Committee). This research was conducted in October 2022, the results show that there are only less than 2% of testing laboratories in Riau Province from thousands of KAN accredited laboratories in Indonesia, only 0.71% of environmental laboratories can test wastewater. Distribution in regencies in Riau Province is also uneven, in Siak Regency 2 Labs, Bengkalis 3 Labs, Pekanbaru City 4 Labs, Rokan Hulu Regency, Rokan Hilir and Dumai City 1 each. Meanwhile, of the 13 regencies/cities in Riau Province, there are still 6 regencies, namely Indragiri Hulu, Kampar, Meranti Islands, Kuantan Singingi and Pelalawan which do not yet have a wastewater testing laboratory. This means that environmental laboratory facilities are still lacking in Riau Province and not available in several districts, and there are still many agencies that do not know that industrial wastewater testing must utilize the KAN-accredited environmental laboratory in monitoring the quality (quality standards) of industrial wastewater in Riau Province. Environmental laboratories should be able to develop, because there is economic potential from these testing services.

Abstract

A technique has been developed to calculate a solar energy potential using Reanalysis data of ECMWF (ERA5)  in Pekanbaru, Riau. The average of solar radiation in Pekanbaru is around 5.0 to 5.5 kWh/m in ten years. The abundant solar energy sources in Pekanbaru that can be utilized is the main factor to support developing the rooftop photovoltaic (PV) systems as a part of renewable energy. The Government’s goals of installing the PV systems are set around 3.6 GW by 2025, therefore, community participation to successful development the system is urgently needed. Considering those factors, the community's understanding and perception towards the PV system should be investigated. This research is based on a qualitative method of questionnaire and a Likert Scale Scoring will be applied to analyze the outcome. The result describes the knowledge level of community to PV systems in Pekanbaru is quite impressive for understanding of renewable energy and environmental awareness at around 86.34% and 83.79% respectively. On the other hand, the aspect of information accessibility and local campaign of PV system utilization shows a mediocre percentage at around 73.23%. Those index scores reveal the support from local governments is required for developing PV systems as one of the possible solutions to reduce greenhouse gases (GHGs)

Abstract

Biotechnology activities related to genetic engineering in plants are currently developing rapidly. This is done to overcome several problems related to improving the quality of food crops as well as various obstacles encountered during crop cultivation. However, along with the development of transgenic plants, various environmental issues due to genetic engineering technology in plants have emerged. The perpetrators of genetic engineering technology development must of course continue to apply environmental ethics so that cases related to the development of genetic engineering products do not occur. Therefore, efforts are needed to apply environmental ethical principles to genetic engineering technology. Several principles of environmental ethics include (1) respect for nature; (2) The principle of moral responsibility (moral responsibility for nature); (3) cosmic solidarity; (4) compassion and concern for nature (caring for nature); (5) The principle of not causing damage (no harm principle); (6) Living simply and in harmony with nature; (7) The principle of justice; (8) The principle of democracy; (9) The principle of moral integrity. In addition to upholding the ethical principles of the environment, government regulations regarding the safety regulations for genetically engineered products must still be complied with in order to avoid the risk of negatively impacting these engineered products.

Abstract

This aims of this study to determine the efficiency and adsorption capacity of the biosorbent in absorbing mercury (II), determine the adsorption kinetics and isotherm model and the biosorbent regeneration ability of white jabon fruit. The optimization of the biosorbent powder was carried out on the parameters of pH, contact time and adsorbate concentration. The biosorbent is regenerated by desorption using an HCl desorption agent. Jabon fruit biosorbent powder was made through the drying process of Jabon fruit that has been cut and washed and then ground using a mortar and pestle. The results of the physical and chemical characteristics in this study showed a water content value of 8.09%, ash content of 1.32%, iodine adsorption capacity of 753.5812 mg/g and methylene blue adsorption capacity of 24.8632 mg/g. The results of the biosorption test showed that the optimum conditions for the biosorbent powder were pH 6 with an efficiency of 99.728% and a capacity of 4.7855 mg/g,  a contact time of 40 minutes with an efficiency of 99.493% and a capacity of 4.7747 mg/g, at an initial concentration of 80 mgL-1 with an efficiency of 99,912. % and the capacity was 3,5761 mg/g. Based on the FTIR results, the functional groups were C-H aliphatic, C-H aromatic, C=O, C-O and N-H. Based on the results of BET analysis, biosorbent powder had a surface area before adsorption of 3.53039 m2/g, after adsorption I 0 m2/g and after regeneration II 0.17056 m2/g. Based on the SEM-EDS results, it was found that the jabon fruit biosorbent powder had elements of O, C, Na, N, Cl, K, Hg and had an uneven texture. However, because it was in powder form, the distance between the particles looked very tight and has a small grain size. So the surface texture looked very smooth. In this study, the percentage of regeneration was 98.36%. The adsorption kinetics of this study follows the second-order Pseudo equation where the equation was y = 0.2097x - 0.0075 with R2 = 1 and K= 5.86339 gmg-1min-1, assuming a chemical adsorption process which includes intervalence forces or electron exchange between the adsorbent and adsorbate and the adsorption isotherm model follows the Langmuir equation with the equation y= 0.019x + 0.0153 with R2 = 0.9665 It is assumed that the active site on the surface of the adsorbent is homogeneous.
