Abstract

Facing death is never an easy task to accomplish, not even for modernity which claims to master and understand all things under the sun. Many philosophers and thinkers ponder upon “death” as both a mystery and a problem, grand in scope and unfathomable in depth. Nevertheless, only a few thinkers relate death with modernity. Zygmunt Bauman is one of the living legends in this respect. With him, one is challenged to be unsettled on the case of thinking about the phenomenon of death and its implications within the framework of modernity’s project, obsession, critique, and power struggle. Deconstructing mortality is arguably one of modernity’s persistent obsessions. By applying hermeneutical approach, Bauman envisions three ways of modernity’s reading on the issue of mortality as well as three strategies to deal with it, namely degeneration, hygiene and immigrant. However, these three readings and strategies, though convincing and relevant in interpreting modernity’s attitude toward death, are lacking in prediction and predilection of the future. Hans Jonas’ way of dealing with mortality issue is discussed at the end of this paper to complete the philosophical reflection on death by Bauman.

Abstract

Ci is an integral part of daily life for the people of Asmat region, for geographically it is located in the lowlands and in the middle of the very broad swamp area in Papua, Indonesia. Since the rivers separate as well as connect one place from another, having a ci becomes a habitus of Asmat people. Ci means a canoe in the Asmat language. Ci is a very important cultural material to meet the needs of daily life, both personal and communal. One of the very basic Asmat expression is “Ci opak, jis opak” (no canoe, no firewood). This means that a family cannot live without a canoe because the most simple things like firewood for cooking are not available. Therefore, ci is fundamental in the life of Asmat people. Unfortunately, ci tends to be shifted or even replaced by motorised transport, while the Asmat people themselves give less attention to preserve it. As a result, they become powerless and are often described like a man who “cemen opak” (does not have a penis) or who is impotent that he is marginalised in the various fields of life.

Abstract

Abstract

This article is an endeavour to be ‘imagerially present’ among the believers in Java, and in this way, could add to the sensitivity to what is happening in the praxis of faith of the Catholics in Java. Christian faith may have caused some changes in the believers’ imagination. Catechesis on the church in Java can take many advantages from this research, considering that its outcome comprises of the church images which can be used to enhance the catechetical material. The distinction of images appears in four dimensions (the believers’ imagerial preferences, the church’s relevance, the believers’ intentions to participate and their contextual and meaningful images). This research is an opening towards further reflections about ‘imagerial catechesis’ in Java. In this eye, it prepares a necessary path for deepening the conviction that the believers’ ‘cultural’ ways of being church are an essential element in the process of doing theology with images. No less than seventeen images have surfaced during the efforts of re-imagining the church images. These ‘cultural’ and communal images are correlated with the ‘biblical’ images of the church in order to unearth the believers’ interpretations of the latter within the sociocultural contexts.

Abstract

Thomas S. Kuhn envisioned the development science as occured through a scientific revolution when the scientific paradigm defended by the scientific community was no longer able to solve concrete problems. The scientists then shifted to a new paradigm that was able to solve the problem as well as promising a more stable of future research. This view has been criticized by Larry Laudan who says that paradigm shift is incompatible with the reality of the development of science itself. For Laudan, science develops through an internal evolution of science itself. The paradigm will never be abandoned altogether whenever scientists face a new scientific problem. Scientific theories will prove its compatibility and update itself through the process of scientific dialogue vertically and horizontally in the hierarchical model of epistemic justification.

Abstract

Liturgy is an essential part of the Catholic Church, because in the liturgy is celebrated the feast of faith as the foundation on which the Catholic Church has been established. The celebration of faith which is spiritual in its nature is carried on in a “physical container”, namely the architecture of the Catholic Church. Because the feast is a holy and sacred celebration, the “physical container” should also be a “sacred space” that it becomes essential as well to create an architectural work with sacred space that can accommodate the holy celebration. This paper wants to explore the theological and liturgical meaning of the concept of sacred space in the Catholic Church architecture. This understanding might be important for those who have particular concern for the Catholic Church architecture, which lately seems to suffer desacralisation in the context and appearance of its architecture.
