Abstract

For John Henry Newman, the illative sense is a faculty owned universally and not particularly by every human being. It is an ability that converges from the various particularities into the one and the same substance, that is, the existence of God. Newman’s illative sense is a way of explaining the sensus fidelium, which is based not simply on the intellect but also on ‘the logic of the heart’. It is a potential to deduce based on the consciousness of the conscience through understanding, judgment, and senses concerning the meaning of a phenomenon. This faculty can assess and conclude in a perfect way, and is beneficial during the process of the mind in deciding naturally whether something is right or wrong within the concrete circumstances. In the light of this idea, Newman’s illative sense is regarded helpful to understand the believers’ way of apprehension in matters of faith, for they might have adopted a particular way of apprehending the objects of faith. This article tries to put the whole idea of illative sense in its relevance to the history and the development of philosophical and theological thoughts.

Abstract

The author argues that homily is not only an event to explain the Scriptures and relate them to the believers’ experiences in order to find God’s will in their daily lives, but a transformative experience for the preacher that it should be conveyed in an attractive, understandable, and influential way. One of the alternatives discussed here is the imaginative preaching. The setting of the imaginative preaching is the world of images, that is, the images living in the sphere of mind and heart. A homily is a space that captures various images from the Scriptures as well as from the believers’ experiences and paints the images through the verbal language, which is used not only to ‘explain’ something already known by the hearers, but to present a figurative language that may open the horizons formerly not realised with simply an explaining language. Imaginative preaching intensifies and opens up the horizons, and not simply widens them. It may offer different ways of understanding to the believers as a community, which is also the place of God’s presence and works day-by-day. In this way imaginative preaching might also be seen as an area of study that focuses on the relatedness among God’s stories, the believers’ stories, and the preacher’s stories. A homilist must always build a bridge between the text and the believers’ context by way of painting the images in the sphere of figurative-verbal-language – a narrative.

Abstract

This study attempts to come up with a contextual theological understanding of the biblical concepts of the Kingdom of God in the light of the armed conflict in Mindanao. It seeks to understand the roots and causes of conflict in Mindanao (hermeneutical situation), into which the meaning of the biblical message of a peaceable kingdom is interpreted and understood in a meaningful manner. Taking into account the current socio-political, economic and cultural realities that contribute to the on-going armed conflict in Mindanao, this study raises the issue of how the kingdom of God which embodies God’s love, peace, liberation and justice should be understood and concretized in a way that it could inform and influence the different religious groups and organizations involved in the Mindanao peace process. This attempt for contextualization is based on the principle that theological formulation in the context of conflict in Mindanao, can only be meaningful and intelligible if it reflects critically on the lived-experiences that is shared by different Muslim and Christian communities in Mindanao, especially the poor and marginalized masses in their search for well-being and self-determination.

Abstract

Wilhelm von Humboldt has put the foundation of Germany’s educational system. He emphasizes the importance of integrity in term of individual personality. Through education, one can develop one’s integrity and personality. The basis of this integrity is human freedom, that is, the freedom to decide one’s own worldview according to one’s choices in life. With this freedom, human is fashioned through the process of education to develop his/her intellectual knowledge, conscience and skills to work in life. One then can contribute genuinely to the development of one’s neighbourhood and society. However, Humboldt’s theory of education needs some critical remarks as well. Without bold conscience the concept of integrity and personality might be twisted into a justification of self-importance. Germany had its own criticism concerning this arrogance during the World War II. Apart from that, when interpreted and applied critically, Humboldt’s ideas of education may contribute a great deal to the development of educational system as well as philosophy of education in Indonesia.

Abstract

For some contemporary thinkers, traditional and modern metaphysical systems were not considered as an adequate account, for they might have abolished the ontological difference. Such circumstances might have taken place because metaphysics was thought of as circumscribing by considering the whatness of any phenomena in form of, or oder of, the same, i.e. substance, essence or first cause. Jean-Luc Marion moves further and suggests phenomenological accounts that culminate in the givenness and the saturated phenomenon – ideas which open the possibilites to overcome the inadequacy of metaphysics. With the phenomenological third reduction, Marion shows that givenness already presents itself which is anterior to the dichotomy between essence and existence. This phenomenology of givenness enables phenomena to appear by itself in the saturated phenomena. In a paradoxical way, he shows that the constituting subject had already been constituted. Phenomenology, therefore, allows the subject to describe any phenomena in the form of, or order of, the other such as Marion proposed. Considering the contexts, this article may serve as an introduction to the notion of givenness and the saturated phenomenon.
