Abstract

This study analyzes the translation of English modals into Indonesian within the context of the novel "Deck the Halls" by Mary Higgins Clark and Carol Higgins Clark. Modals, such as "can," "could," "may," "might," "should," "would," and "must," are crucial in expressing nuances of possibility, necessity, permission, and ability. Their accurate translation is vital for preserving the narrative's tone, intent, and subtlety. This study examines how these English modals are rendered in Indonesian, highlighting translation strategies employed to convey the original meaning effectively. The analysis reveals that modals are often translated through literal and contextual approaches. For instance, "must" is translated as "harus" to convey strong necessity, while "might" is rendered as "mungkin" to express uncertainty. The study also explores challenges such as nuance loss and context sensitivity, which arise due to structural and cultural differences between English and Indonesian. The effectiveness of the translation is evaluated based on how well it retains the original modals' meanings and narrative functions. Overall, this analysis demonstrates that while translating English modals involves navigating complex linguistic and cultural factors, the strategies employed in "Deck the Halls" generally succeed in preserving the narrative's intended tone and meaning.

Abstract

This paper aims to identify and analyze the figurative language implemented in Eminem’s songs “Mockingbird,” “When I’m Gone”, and “Hailie’s Song”. Using a descriptive qualitative research method, this study collected data through careful listening and reading of the song's lyrics. This process involved identification, categorization, and analysis of the lyrics, leading to conclusions about the theme song's explanation and interpretation. The theoretical framework is based on Hurford and Heasley’s (1983) semantic theory, with the meaning approach presented by Geoffrey N. Leech. The findings reveal how figurative language intricately depicts themes of fame, family issues, and father’s sacrifice, offering deeper insights into the artist’s emotional landscape.

Abstract

Proficiency in English is essential for individuals working in the hospitality industry, including in Indonesia. However, many Indonesian hotel- staff struggle to use English appropriately in workplace settings despite being employed in five-star establishments. In the context of English Language Teaching (ELT), there is a need for instructional materials that incorporate relevant linguistic features and pragmatic usage tailored to the specific contexts and situations of the hospitality industry. This study, therefore, aimed to develop English teaching materials that emphasize linguistic elements and expressions frequently used in hospitality settings. A corpus linguistics approach was adopted to ensure the materials reflect authentic and commonly used language in real-life hospitality interactions. Employing a qualitative-descriptive design, the study utilized the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) to identify frequently occurring English expressions within hospitality discourse. The findings revealed a range of commonly used expressions that are contextually relevant to the hospitality sector. Based on these results, it is recommended that English teaching materials for hotel staff be developed using corpus-based approaches to promote more authentic and natural language use in professional hospitality environments.
