Abstract

This study investigated and described factors affecting the achievements of maritime students in learning English and was concerned with four factors that are believed to be closely related to learning English. They are family background, orientation, beliefs and learning experiences. The qualitative descriptive method was used for doing this study. The subject of this study was two nautical classes in the fourth semester in 2014/15 at the Malahayati Merchant Marine College at Durung, Aceh Besar District, on the north coast of Aceh about 22 km, east of Banda Aceh. The instrument used for collecting the data was a questionnaire with 17 items, comprising both open ended and closed questions. In addition, interviews were conducted to clarify the data from the questionnaire. The data from the questionnaire were coded, grouped, classified and concluded. The achievements of the students in learning ESL were affected by four factors, viz: (i) family background, which covered the students’ origins and their parents’ level of education, (ii) beliefs, (iii) orientation, and (iv) learning experiences. Of these four factors, belief was the most important one.

Abstract

This study intended to find out if there was a significant difference in writing ability between students who were taught writing using the Process Genre Approach (PGA) and those who were taught writing using the teacher’s usual approach. Two classes were taken using random sampling, one for the experimental group (EG) and the other for the control group (CG), with 24 students in each group from eleventh graders in Nurul Ulum MA Peureulak. Data, from the results of pre-tests and post-tests, was collected for quantitative analysis of the students’ writing abilities. The results from the analysis showed that the mean of the post-test scores from the EG was 67 whilst that from the CG was 53. The results from the t-test showed that the students who were taught using the PGA performed significantly better in writing than those who were taught the standard way. Analysis of the students’ writing ability showed more than 20 % improvement in four aspects of writing: organization, structure/grammar, content/idea and mechanics. The EG achieved significant improvement in all aspects of their writing ability than the CG so we can conclude that using the PGA can improve EFL writing ability more than present standard teaching-learning for EFL writing.

The Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) questionnaire adapted and modified from Horwitz, Horwitz, and Cope (1986), and Yahya (2013) was used in collecting the data. Sixty five second grade, year 11 senior high students from SMA Negeri 5 Banda Aceh were asked to fill in the questionnaire to find out what factors lead to speaking anxiety among these EFL students. The findings indicated that communication apprehension factors lead to 71% of students’ speaking anxiety followed by fear of negative evaluations, 53%; then test anxiety, 48%, and the lowest was 39% for anxiety about English classes. English teachers are expected to be able to understand the character of each of their students in the classroom, because the anxiety level for each student can be different, one from the other.

Abstract

This study analyzed the syllabus for second grade of the elementary level at private bilingual school in Banda Aceh. It is a qualitative case study which analyzed the syllabus using a coding system. Out of six aspects to be reviewed based on Breen’s (2001) concepts, five aspects were fulfilled by the syllabus. However the syllabus did not cover one important aspect for an ideal syllabus, namely local content. Moreover, the syllabus was developed without a balance of language skills. It failed to describe the methods to be used in the teaching and learning processes and only specified a small number of games. On the other hand, this syllabus had a theme-based syllabus design which favors young language learners learning a foreign language.  The syllabus had also a good time table for assessment in order to monitor the progress of students during and at the end of the course. Finally, this syllabus specified the teaching objectives which thus enabled teachers to expand the teaching materials.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the reasons for dialect shifting by speakers from West Aceh when they speak Acehnese outside of the West Aceh area. A qualitative method was used for this research. The data was collected using interviews following an interview guide. The researcher interviewed the informants who were all from West Aceh and living in Banda Aceh for educational purposes. Based on the results from the interviews, the researcher found that the West Acehnese shifted their dialect into other dialects when they spoke with other Acehnese outside of West Aceh. The dialect was shifted by them for various reasons, such as lacking confidence to use their own dialect, to avoid embarrassment or being ridiculed by other speakers, to make them easier to be understood, to get acceptance and respect from the community where they were and due to being influenced, unconsciously, by other, more dominant dialects.
