Abstract

The long debate on the relevance of the concept of Islamic caliphate government to the modern political concept has been occurring among scholars up to nowadays. This situation leads to an important question about, to what extent the relevance/irrelevance of an Islamic political concept, when it is contextualized to the modern political conditions? This article aims to explore the source of Islamic political thought from the Classical Muslim intellectual; Almawardi and its contextualization to the modern political concepts. Through an in-depth literature study by using the political institutionalism approach, found out that the spirit of the classical Islamic political concept lies on the distribution of power which is not relevant to the spirit of power separation in the modern political concepts. Hereby, it can be emphasized that even if the concept of Khilafah which is promoted by the Islamic political activists basically out of date, but there were basic values related to the government administration and institution basically still relevance to the modern political concepts. The principle of justice, problem management, and transparency were generally still agreed by government ruler in this modern era.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the environmental ethical values of Maduranese traditional society. Their belief to nature, especially related to the land and sea landscape is manifestation form of shifting paradigm: from anthropocentrism to the spirit of biocentrism-ecocentrism, become the basis for the environmental ethics development. Based on the ethnographical approach, the moral view of Maduranese traditional society is obtained through participant observation and direct interaction, the results of this study revealed that Maduranese traditional society put forward two main principles in interacting to the nature, i.e. harmony and belief to the supernatural forces, which is led to the diversity of the land use typology and nature’s rituals. For land use context, the cosmology of Maduranese traditional society is more complicated and rigorous, because the ecological factors of Madura are dominated by uneven mooring compared to the ecology of Java Island which is dominated by rice fields. The Maduranese's traditional society belief system to nature seems more syncretic than the tradition of the people in Java Island.

Abstract

The Qur’anic interpretation which is done by a mufassir, ideally must be free from various interests, personally or even politically. Factually a mufassir often carries particular interest in their interpretation processes, whether it is done consciously or not. Bakri Syahid, as a mufassir was not able to be free from the political interests that supporting New Order government when he interpreted Alquran. This can be clearly seen in his interpretation of the verses about women. Based on the theoretical analysis of Michel Foucault's power of knowledge, this study revealed that Bakri Syahid interpretation on the verses about women in Tafsir Alhuda showing the Javanese ideological influence, which is positioned women as ‘kanca wingking’ or complementary behind their husbands, and also the 'hidden' power; namely the affirmation of women position listed in national regulation No. 1, 1974 about marriage. This result also confirmed that the product of interpretation could not be completely free from the mufassir interests, and even could be a "mirror" for the government political interests in certain time.

Abstract

This study explains the role and strategy of Malaysia during Mahathir Mohammad era and Indonesia in the Soeharto era in facing their Islamists group opposition. In their early period, these two regimes used an iron cage to defeat their political enemies. Mahathir fought with the power of PAS (Parti Al-Islam Se-Malaysia) which becomes more radical in the early of 1980s; meanwhile, Suharto faced the Islamic extremist groups in the early of 1970s. Mahathir consisted to give enough spaces for competition, Suharto did not want to compromise. In its progress, these two regimes chose softer strategy by playing 'Islamic cards’ due to the double purposes: coopting the opposite and building a better image as an Islamic regime. Hence, the political project of Islamization of Mahathir and Soeharto could not be separated from the problem of domestic political contestation and an effort to look for new legitimacy. Thereby, their Islamic political projects ended differently. Due to the monetary crisis and democratic reforms in 1998 affected the Soeharto regime to step down and make an end to all of the political projects he has designed. On the contrary, the Mahathir regime has successfully survived in facing the similar crisis, so that his pro-Islamic policy has passed off although not as aggressive as in the past.
