Abstract

The purpose of this research is to examine the effect of integrating CiDOS on teaching architectural design process for Malaysian polytechnic architectural students in producing a creative product. The web based information is set up based on Caroll’s minimal theory, while the integration is based on Brown and Campione’s technology of learning theory. This study utilized a quasi-experimental method. Final semester students from two (2) classes being used as research samples where sixty (25) students are in the treatment group and another sixty (25) students are in the control group. The final products being evaluated by the experts in architectural field using an instrument based on Creative Product Analysis Model (CPAM). The inferential statistics namely T-Test and Pearson Correlation Analysis with a significant level p = 0.01 were utilized. Research outcome shows that there is a significant difference between the treatment group product (M=79.1) and control group product (M=70.5).  This research contributes to the use of real case in the development of an architectural website, in the use of mobile technology as media information sources and in the construction of validated instrument which is used to evaluate creative architectural products. Keywords: Web Mobile, Design Process, Creative Product, CPAM

Abstract

Malaysia has done very well in eradicating the problem of poverty in the country. The poverty rate has fallen from 49.3 percent in 1970 to 3.9 percent in 2009. Nonetheless, one main facet of such phenomenon remains, i.e. the majority of the poor are from the Malay-Muslim community. In Malaysia, the management of zakat is under the state jurisdiction. As such the collection and disbursement of the zakat funds also falls under the purview of the Majlis Agama Islam Negeri. Each of the Majlis Agama Islam Negeri has its own zakat collection body. Two issues emerged. First, while zakat should be able to free the recipient from poverty, yet, the proportion of money allocated for these groups of asnaf is very minimal such that it fails to uplift the economic well-being of the recipients. Second, current practices adopted by most zakat agency are to give cash money to the recipients which failed to motivate them to embark on productive activities to uplift their economic well-beings. This paper evaluate the attempt made to provide start-up capital for the poor to engage in business activities using the zakat fund in the hope that the success of the initiatives will see a reduction in the incidence of poverty among the muslim communities and to ensure that the money disbursed to the poor and the needy are used not for consumptive purpose but for productive activities. Keywords: zakah, poverty, poor and needy

Abstract

Learning a second language will be considered succeed when the learner is able to speak in the language s/he is studying (Nunan, 1999). Speaking is not merely about being able to pronounce the word correctly, using the appropriate stress and intonation, but more important is to survive in the different context where the conversation is taking place (Harmer, 1997). This paper offers to use authentic materials in the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) speaking classroom since authentic gives students “exposure to real language and its use in its own community” (Widdowson, 1990).  Authentic materials are materials that we can use in the classroom and that have not been changed in any way for EFL students (Sanderson in Tamo, 2009). The use of authentic materials in EFL speaking classroom will give students chances to encounter the real world and how the language is really used. They are also said to be motivating, giving students sense of achievement when able to communicate as the native speakers do. Therefore, it is recommended that teachers use authentic spoken materials in EFL classroom audio visually to enable students to imitate native speakers of English in speaking, not only on how to pronounce the words correctly and using the appropriate stress in speaking, but also able to use correct body language to avoid cultural misunderstanding. However, both teacher and students also need to be aware of a few disadvantages of using different sources of authentic materials, especially when dealing with culture issues. Teachers are also encouraged to give pedagogical support for students when dealing with listening tasks and literary texts. Key words: Speaking, teaching speaking, authentic materials, EFL classroom

Abstract

Urbanization has opened urban thermal comfort zones thereby creating an urban island environment worldwide. Knowledge necessary to mitigate this phenomenon extend beyond knowledge on the city itself. This study sought to determine the role of environments in creating an urban heat island. A literature review was applied, to collect current knowledge on social, built, modified, and natural environment, in POETIC framework. The aim was to ascertain environmental components of urban heat island in Palembang city. The results indicated some environmental dimensions of urban heat island in Palembang. Social dimension consists of education level, people density in a house, and income level. Built dimension consists of distance between building, material albedo, material impermeability, building height, ventilations number, and ventilations area. Modified environment dimension consists of area of burning spot in open space, water pollution level, air pollution level, garden area, and green roof area. Natural environment consists of green open space area, vegetation density, and leaf area exposed to open space. Some hypotheses was developed and recommended for the further research. Keywords: Environment, POETIC model, Urban Heat Island

Abstract

This research empirically measures the economic exposure of 11 selected miscellaneous companies in Indonesia. It also attempts to empirically explore the influence of firm size (SIZE) export (EXPORT), liquidity (QR), and leverage (LTD) on the economic exposure of those companies. Annual data from 2007 to 2010 which was collected from the www.idx.co.id and www.bi.go.idwere used and analyzed by the multiple linear regression to measure the economic exposure and examine the influences of SIZE, EXPORT, QR, and LTD on the economic exposure. Both partial (t-test) and simultaneous (F-test) hypotheses were constructed and tested at the 5% level of significance. Data was analyzed by the software of SPSS for Windows. The research documented that, with the exception of the QR which has a negative and significant effect partially on the economic exposure, all other variables, i.e., SIZE, EXPORT, and LTD were found to have insignificant effects. Meanwhile, based on the F-test, the research found that the SIZE, EXPORT, QR, and LTD affected simultaneously and significantly the economic exposure of the companies. These findings imply that in order to manage their economic exposure, the companies should control these variables, especially QR.Keywords :Economic Exposure; Firm Size; Export Ratio; Quick Ratio; Long Term Debt to Total Asset Ratio; Miscellaneous Companies; Indonesia.

Abstract

Mining sector is a natural resource that takes a long time to do exploitation. Mining activity is also a sector that has a great impact on development in an area such as economic, social and environmental. Therefore, the concept of sustainable mining development should be directed to achieve three objectives, namely economic development, social andenvironmental. Economic purpose is not only to focus on the macro-economic growth alone, but must consider the economic conditions of local communities. Then pay attention to social goals must be the local social and cultural conditions so that welfare can be improved. Further environmental objectives must considerthe balance of the environment around the mining activity. The amount of growth in the mining sector on development in the province especially in Aceh Besar district can be seen from the Gross Domestic Regional Product (GDRP). This sector has a major role to both the local economy and the growth conditions of the local communities. But the concept of sustainable development is not only economic growth alone is the target of development of a region. According to data from the Department of Mines and Energy of the Province of Aceh in 2011, there were six (6) mining companies operating in Aceh Besar regency which has contributed greatly to the GDP of Aceh Besar district. However, the selection of research sites only in existing mining companies in the district Lhoong as a case study because of the attention to the criteria of the concept of sustainable development. The results showed that the mining activity in the area during this study generated a lot of negative impressions for both regional and local communities. Aceh post-tsunami and post-conflict between the Government of Indonesia and the Free Aceh Movement (GAM), a lot of investors who built the company's mining sector in Aceh Besar district, but the potential is very big problem will arise if the problems that exist today cannot be solved immediately. Ecological damage caused by the efforts of development and economic growth has provided a real threat. The condition raises concerns about the sustainability of resources for future generations in Aceh Besar district. Therefore, by introducing the concept of sustainable development of mining this is a solution to overcome the problems of existing mines in the province especially in Aceh Besar district. Keywords: Sustainable Mining, economic, social, environmental, Aceh Besar

Abstract

Over the last 30 years, Libya’s population has grown at rates of about 2-3% per year. According to the Department of Statistics and Census, the total population in the country was 3.23 million in 1984 and it increased to 5.5 million in 2006. Human activities and over-exploitation of the available resources are the main reasons influencing and accelerating the phenomenon of desertification in the north-western Libya. The main objective of this study is to assess the impact of population growth factor on desertification and land degradation in the region. The findings of this study suggested that the population growth rate is an important factor that influenced desertification and land degradation in the study area. Moreover, the rapid population growth and high population density in the region contributed clearly in the deterioration of the weakened and fragile environment through exploitative hypersensitive pressure caused by the growth. In addition, the overexploitation of the region resources by man  had led to the deterioration of vegetation, groundwater depletion and soil erosion. These perpetuated the prevalence desertification and increased its severity in the region. Keywords:    Population Growth, Desertification, Land Degradation, Overexploitation, North-western Libya.
