Abstract

This research aims to explore the role of vegetarianism in building spiritual well-being according to Buddhist teachings at Maha Vihara Maitreya Duta Palembang. This research uses a qualitative approach through interviews and literature studies with Buddhist practitioners and spiritual experts. The results and discussion of this study show that vegetarianism is in harmony with the core principles of Buddhism such as ahimsa (non-violence), Karuna (compassion), and metta (loving-kindness). This practice helps reduce negative karma and increase positive karma by avoiding killing animals for food consumption. Additionally, a vegetarian diet is also known to support the development of self-control, discipline and inner calm, which are essential in the Buddhist practice of meditation and contemplation. And it is recommended that future researchers be able to develop research like this even better so that it can fill in the deficiencies in this research.

And what is the position of women in the views of the two religious feminist figures, namely Kamla Bhasin and Leila Ahmed. Based on these two things, the definition, causes and how to resolve the conflict that occurred will be elaborated on based on the thoughts of the two figures. This research uses a feminist and comparative approach, and also searches for library data, especially books containing the main thoughts of Kamla Bhasin and Leila Ahmed. Apart from that, researchers looked for other sources in the form of journals, theses, theses, articles, news, and results of interviews by bloggers/writers with these two figures through strict selection. In this study several findings were found: First, Islam and Hinduism basically glorify women. Teaching gender equality and justice, it's just that many people who act as interpreters of sacred texts and influential religious figures in society are misguided in interpreting and conveying their messages, this is due to the influence of cultural elements that are closely related to patriarchy. . Second, according to Kamla, many women are afraid to fight the patriarchy that restrains them because they are afraid of being accused of being against/opposing local religion and culture..

Abstract

This study aims to describe and analyze the role of the Tajurhalang Village Government, Bogor Regency, in maintaining inter-religious harmony. The background of this research stems from the dynamics of inter-religious relations in Indonesia, which are often characterized by conflict. As the closest government unit to the community, the village government has a strategic role in creating social harmony amid religious diversity. Therefore, this research seeks to understand the steps taken by the Tajurhalang Village Government in maintaining and strengthening inter-religious tolerance. This research uses a qualitative method with a sociology of religion approach. Data were collected through direct observation, interviews with the village government and religious leaders, and the study of related literature. This approach allowed the researcher to explore in depth the strategies applied in managing religious diversity at the village level and identify the factors that support the effectiveness of the policy. The results show that the Tajurhalang Village Government is active in maintaining inter-religious harmony through various strategies. Some of these include organizing social activities such as gotong royong, free medical treatment, and compensation for orphans, as well as fostering youth based on religious moderation. In addition, the village government initiated quarterly meetings with religious leaders, managed the allocation and limitation of houses of worship, and encouraged interfaith dialog. These efforts are supported by the utilization of local social and cultural conditions, thus creating a harmonious atmosphere in the community. Thus, Tajurhalang Village can serve as an example for other regions in managing religious diversity

Abstract

This paper examines the role of the Islamic Cultural Center (ICC) Jakarta as a cultural platform for the introduction of Shia Islam in Indonesia, particularly in the Greater Jakarta area. ICC functions as an intellectual hub for the Shia community, focusing on studies of Islamic culture and serving as a form of Iranian cultural diplomacy in the country. Rather than conducting direct propagation of Shia teachings, ICC adopts a cultural approach aimed at fostering understanding and correcting negative prejudices about Shia and its figures within the wider society. Through religious and cultural programs, seminars, scholarly discussions, publishing, educational activities, and the use of information technology, ICC actively contributes to promoting Islam as a religion of mercy for the universe (rahmatan lil ‘alamin) and serves as a bridge for inter-sectarian communication. This research employs a qualitative method, utilizing interviews, field observations, and literature studies, analyzed through an anthropological lens based on Bronislaw Malinowski’s functionalism theory. The results highlight that ICC Jakarta prioritizes educational and cultural endeavors in introducing the Shia identity to Indonesia’s diverse society.

Abstract

Vihara Gayatri is understood not merely as a place of worship, but as a spiritual and social space that plays a significant role in shaping the religious identity of young Buddhists. This study aims to analyze the symbolic meaning and the role of religious traditions in Vihara Gayatri, Depok, in the process of forming the religious identity of Buddhist youth amid the tide of modernization. Using a qualitative method with an anthropological approach, data were obtained through in-depth interviews with temple administrators, a romo (spiritual leader), young devotees, and visitors, supported by field observation and literature review. The findings reveal that the traditions practiced at Vihara Gayatri such as the Seven Wells ritual, the lighting of the Great Candle, and Dhamma learning activities are perceived as means of spiritual purification, moral cultivation, and social cohesion. The water from the seven wells symbolizes inner cleansing, the Great Candle represents wisdom and enlightenment, while Dhamma activities serve as a medium for internalizing Buddhist teachings. These findings align with Erik Erikson’s psychosocial identity theory, which emphasizes the role of social experience in identity formation, and demonstrate how the vihara functions as a symbolic system that reinforces the religious identity of Buddhist youth within a dynamic cultural and spiritual context.

Abstract

This research analyzes the role of religious figures in the electoral dynamics of the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI) in DKI Jakarta, a region known for its strong political identity polarization. PSI presents an anomaly because it positions itself as a modern party that rejects the politicization of religion, yet it has managed to maintain significant electability. The results of the qualitative analysis show that the role of support and legitimacy from religious figures is marginal and not essential in the formation of PSI's electoral base, thereby rejecting the hypothesis of the centrality of religious legitimacy. PSI's electability is driven by non-primordial factors, including its appeal to urban young voters (Millennials and Gen Z), its commitment to performance and anti-corruption issues, and the construction of a political identity as a modern/secular opposition to religion-based parties. The existing role of religious figures is limited to the personal, educational, and dialogical realms, rather than institutional mass mobilization. These findings introduce the concept of "Electability Without Religious Legitimacy" and verify the shift in political cleavage from a primordial basis to a generational and modernist-vs-traditionalist ideological basis in Indonesian urban politics.

Abstract

This study examines the ecological perspectives and practices of the Khonghucu community in Bogor using the frameworks of ecotheology and Pierre Bourdieu's social practice theory. Ecotheological analysis explores theological interpretations of the human-nature-God relationship, while Bourdieu’s theory analyzes the interplay of habitus, capital, and fields in shaping everyday environmental practices. Findings indicate that the San Cai (Tian, Di, Ren) concept and the Three Dao principle form a holistic worldview of nature as a cosmic unity that must be preserved. These values manifest in practices such as waste management, energy conservation, greening activities, and religious rituals with ecological dimensions. However, implementation faces challenges including personal inconsistency, modern lifestyle pressures, and limited religious leadership exemplification. This study contributes to understanding how religion can inspire environmental action and offers an integrative view of spiritual and practical dimensions in faith based environmental movements.

Abstract

This research is to deeply analyze and describe the social interaction patterns of the Sodong Village community in their religious life through a phenomenological approach. Phenomenology is a method for understanding the essence of a phenomenon consciously experienced by individuals, in this case, how the Sodong Village community lives their social and religious lives. This study uses a qualitative-descriptive approach with data collection techniques such as participatory observation and in-depth interviews with religious figures, community leaders, and residents. The results of this study reveal that the social interactions of the Sodong Village community are divided into three main patterns: interactions that are communal and social, religious interactions, and educational interactions. These patterns not only serve as a social mechanism to maintain harmony but also as a medium to strengthen religious and local cultural identity. The findings conclude that daily social interactions, based on the values of tolerance and mutual respect, are the primary foundation for the harmony of religious life in Sodong Village.
