Abstract

Junior high school students in Indonesia consistently face systemic challenges in their mathematical reasoning skills, leading to consistently poor performance on international tests like PISA. This enduring educational disparity underscores an immediate need for pedagogical reforms that transcend rote memorization and promote approaches that foster cognitive adaptability. Our study was driven by the need to evaluate and compare the efficacy of three prominent student-centered frameworks: Problem-Based Learning (PBL), Creative Problem Solving (CPS), and Problem Posing, in enhancing students' reasoning outcomes. Our study utilized a quasi-experimental design featuring a post-test-only control group. The sample consisted of 93 seventh-grade students from Bandar Lampung. The data underwent statistical testing because the CPS group exhibited a non-normal distribution, as determined by preliminary normality testing (Sig. = 0.000). Therefore, the non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis Test was employed to ensure analytical integrity. The findings revealed a statistically significant disparity in reasoning achievement across the three experimental groups (Asymp.Sig. = 0.006). Detailed pairwise comparisons using the Bonferroni correction demonstrated that while PBL and CPS yielded comparable results (Adj.Sig. = 1.000), likely due to their shared reliance on structured problem-solving foundations, the Problem Posing model emerged as the most potent intervention. It significantly outperformed both PBL (Adj. Sig. = 0.007) and CPS (Adj. Sig. = 0.035). This superiority stems from the unique cognitive demands of problem-solving, which necessitate that students engage in thorough, divergent thinking and careful structural analysis of mathematical concepts. This model enhances metacognitive skills essential for advanced reasoning by transforming students' roles from problem solvers to creators. This study recommends problem posing as a core approach for educators aiming to improve students' mathematical reasoning. Keywords: mathematical reasoning, problem posing, problem-based learning, creative problem solving.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a SMARTECH e-module integrated with Techno-mathematical Literacy (TmL) and to analyze its content validity, practicality, and the observed changes in students' cognitive engagement following the e-module's implementation. The study used a mixed-methods design with a Design-Based Research (DBR) approach. The subjects consisted of 120 junior high school students selected through purposive sampling from three schools in different areas in West Java. In the implementation stage, a one-group pretest-posttest design was used. Data were collected through expert assessment sheets, student and teacher practicality questionnaires, cognitive engagement questionnaires, observation sheets, and interviews. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive qualitative methods to identify the e-module design characteristics; Aiken's V to assess content validity based on expert judgment; descriptive analysis to assess practicality; and paired-samples t-test, Cohen's d, and N-gain to examine changes in students' cognitive engagement. The results of the study indicate that the developed e-module has the main characteristics of a systematic learning flow, an easy-to-use digital interface, activities that encourage active thinking, and support for independent learning. The results of expert validation indicate that the e-module has adequate content validity across mathematical content suitability, TmL integration, instructional design, and activity flow (0,80 each), as well as language and readability (0.79). The results of the practicality test showed an average score of 4.35 (87%), which is classified as very practical. The pretest-posttest results showed that the use of the SMARTECH e-module was associated with a significant increase in students' cognitive engagement, with t(119) = 55.46, p < 0.001, Cohen's d = 0.97, and N-gain = 0.44. Qualitative findings support these results, namely, students were more active in exploring various strategies, comparing representations, engaging in conceptual discussions, and being more persistent in solving non-routine problems. Thus, the SMARTECH e-module is declared valid, highly practical, and has the potential to increase students' cognitive involvement in mathematics learning in junior high school. Keywords: e-module, SMARTECH,  techno-mathematical literacy, cognitive engagement, design-based research.

Abstract

Integer multiplication is one of the important materials in mathematics. However, material on integer multiplication often becomes a problem for junior high school students' learning. This study aims to determine the learning barriers experienced by junior high school students in the integer multiplication material and to identify the characteristics of these barriers (ontogenic, epistemological, and didactic). This study used a qualitative method with a diagnostic study design. The research participants were 14 eighth-grade students at a public junior high school in Bitung City, North Sulawesi, with 3 students selected as subjects for exploration based on the types and patterns of errors and the diversity of levels of understanding observed in learning integer multiplication. The research procedure began with the preparation of a diagnostic test instrument consisting of three abstract questions and story problems related to the multiplication of integers, as well as an interview guide. The instruments used comprised two types: a learning-obstacle diagnostic test and a semi-structured interview guide, while the researcher served as the analytical instrument. Data collection in this study was carried out using triangulation, namely observation, interviews, and documentation of textbooks and student notebooks. The research data analysis was conducted in three stages, namely data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The study found three interrelated types of learning obstacles: ontogenic, epistemological, and didactical. Based on the results of the research and discussion on the identification of learning obstacles, it can be concluded that the characteristics of learning obstacles in learning integer multiplication in junior high school are ontogenic obstacle in the form of memorization without understanding the rules of multiplication of signs, epistemological obstacle in the form of misunderstanding of the definition and characteristics of integers, misconceptions about the rules of multiplication of signs, difficulties in understanding the relationship between real contexts and integer operations, and didactic obstacle in the form of design and implementation of learning. Based on the results of this study, it is necessary to create a learning design to overcome students' learning obstacles in junior high school integer multiplication. Keywords: learning obstacle, integer multiplication, diagnostic study, junior high school students.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the profiles and error patterns in the scientific reasoning of upper secondary school students regarding static fluids. This study employs a quantitative approach using a survey design. The study involved 84 students in Malang as respondents, selected through purposive sampling based on the following criteria: having studied static fluids, being taught by the same physics teacher, being enrolled in an active physics specialization class, and being present for the full duration of the test. The test instrument consisted of 10 open-ended questions covering five indicators of scientific reasoning, namely correlational reasoning, proportional reasoning, probabilistic reasoning, control of variables, and hypothetical-deductive reasoning, with a Cronbach’s alpha reliability coefficient of 0.812. The reliability of the instrument and the inter-rater agreement were evaluated through a two-stage inter-rater test using Cohen’s Kappa and the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC), which yielded an ICC value of 0.981 (very high category). Data analysis was conducted in two stages: quantitatively to measure the level of scientific reasoning, and qualitatively through content analysis to identify patterns of students’ errors. The research shows that students’ average scientific reasoning ability falls within the moderate category (49.42), with the distribution of cognitive levels dominated by the Late Transition (37%) and Early Transition (35%) stages. Only 12% of students reached the Formal Operational level. Proportional reasoning indicators showed the highest achievement, whilst hypothetical-deductive reasoning was the lowest. The highest conceptual understanding was found in Pascal’s Law, followed by Archimedes’ Principle, and the lowest in hydrostatic pressure. The main error patterns identified were students’ difficulty integrating quantitative data into numerical probabilities and their inability to design systematic experiments and identify control variables. These findings indicate that although students passively understand basic concepts, they still struggle with logical justification and procedural reasoning. Keywords: error patterns, scientific reasoning, static fluid.

Abstract

Mathematical problem-solving ability is a crucial competency, yet it remains a challenge in many schools, including SMPIT Al Qalam South Bengkulu, where students' statistics scores fall into the "very low" category (48.6%) due to conventional teaching methods that lack significant technological integration. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of the Zep Quiz 2D virtual world-based gamification platform on 8th-grade students' mathematical problem-solving abilities in statistics. A quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design was employed, involving 60 students. Samples were selected via purposive sampling: 30 students in the experimental class (VIII C) were taught using Zep Quiz integrated with Polya-based student worksheets, while 30 students in the control class (VIII D) received conventional instruction.  The research instrument consisted of a descriptive test validated and proven reliable based on Polya’s four problem-solving indicators. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and an independent t-test after verifying the assumptions of normality (Shapiro-Wilk test) and homogeneity (Levene's test). The results showed that the experimental class achieved a higher average posttest score of 87.30 (N-gain of 0.77, high category) compared to the control class, which had an average posttest score of 81.93 (N-gain of 0.66, medium category); the hypothesis test yielded a significant result (p = 0.038 < 0.05). It is concluded that Zep Quiz is significantly more effective than conventional instruction in enhancing students' mathematical problem-solving abilities. Keywords: gamification, mathematical problem solving, quasi-experiment, zep quiz.
