Abstract

Predictive Maintenance (PdM) based on the Internet of Things (IoT) has emerged as a strategic approach to improve equipment reliability, reduce unplanned downtime, and optimize maintenance costs in manufacturing industries. However, despite the rapid advancement of PdM technologies, studies focusing on their economic evaluation remain relatively limited. This study aims to identify the economic evaluation methods used in PdM-IoT literature, analyze the reported economic benefits, identify key implementation challenges, and propose future research directions. A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was conducted following the PRISMA protocol. Literature was collected from Scopus, Google Scholar, and IEEE Xplore databases for the period 2019–2025. From an initial pool of 268 publications, 20 articles met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed in depth. The findings indicate that Return on Investment (ROI) and Net Present Value (NPV) are the most frequently used methods for evaluating the economic feasibility of PdM-IoT implementation. The reported benefits include reduced maintenance costs, minimized downtime, improved asset availability, and enhanced operational efficiency. Nevertheless, several challenges remain, including high initial investment costs, data integration complexity, sensor infrastructure requirements, and difficulties in quantifying indirect economic benefits. The study concludes that economic evaluation plays a crucial role in supporting PdM-IoT investment decisions and highlights the need for more comprehensive evaluation frameworks tailored to specific industrial contexts.

Abstract

Building plumbing systems have gained increasing scholarly attention alongside the rise of sustainable construction, smart infrastructure, and digital building technologies. This study maps the development of research on building plumbing systems from 2005 to 2025 using an integrated approach combining bibliometric analysis and a systematic literature review. Data were retrieved from the Scopus database using keywords related to plumbing systems, water supply, drainage, smart plumbing, IoT, and digital twin technologies, with article selection conducted through the PRISMA framework. From 1,245 identified records, 612 peer-reviewed journal articles were included in the final analysis. Bibliometric techniques using VOSviewer and Biblioshiny were applied to evaluate publication trends, geographic and institutional contributions, citation performance, and keyword co-occurrence networks. Results indicate a consistent upward trend in publications, rising from 45 articles (2005–2010) to 259 articles (2021–2025). China emerges as the most productive country, while the United States demonstrates the highest citation impact. Keyword analysis reveals three main thematic clusters: water systems, sanitation and drainage, and modern plumbing technologies. The study also identifies key research gaps, including limited integration of artificial intelligence and machine learning, early-stage development of digital twin applications in plumbing systems, and insufficient empirical studies in tropical environments. These findings highlight critical directions for advancing intelligent, efficient, and sustainable plumbing system research

Abstract

Abstract This study presents a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) that integrates techno-economic analysis of curing temperature variations on the mechanical properties and failure behavior of carbon fiber sandwich composites with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) foam cores. The systematic review was conducted using the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) protocol with structured searches across the Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases, using keyword combinations: "curing temperature," "carbon fiber sandwich composite," "PVC foam," "mechanical properties," and "techno-economic analysis." Of 147 identified articles, 19 studies met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed in depth. Composite materials are widely applied in engineering applications due to their superior strength-to-weight ratio; however, manufacturing process parameters such as curing temperature critically influence both structural performance and production cost efficiency. The objective of this study is to synthesize the latest scientific evidence and determine the optimal curing temperature that maximizes mechanical performance while considering the associated energy consumption costs and economic implications of material failure prevention. Experimental validation was carried out using specimens fabricated via the vacuum bagging method, subjected to curing temperatures of 70°C, 80°C, and no curing (room temperature). Flexural testing was performed using the three-point bending method in accordance with ASTM C393 standards. The synthesis of systematic review findings and experimental validation demonstrates that curing at 80°C yields the highest flexural strength (48.35 MPa) and elastic modulus (67.03 GPa), representing a 60.8% improvement over uncured specimens. From an engineering economics perspective, the additional energy costs of curing at 80°C are substantially offset by reduced failure risk, lower maintenance costs, and an extended service life of the composite structure. These findings support the adoption of 80°C curing as the economically optimal manufacturing condition for carbon fiber/PVC foam sandwich composites.

Abstract

This paper presents a comprehensive literature review of recent advances in DC–DC converter technologies for hydrogen fuel cell power conditioning, with particular emphasis on proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) used in electric vehicle and stationary energy systems. Covering 29 peer-reviewed studies, the review examines progress in converter topologies, control methodologies, and performance optimization. The analysis highlights interleaved boost converters combined with advanced control strategies—such as linear quadratic regulator (LQR) control, fractional-order PID control, and sliding mode control—as the current state-of-the-art, achieving efficiencies above 95% while substantially reducing input current ripple and improving transient response. Emerging research trends include high-gain impedance-network converters enabling wide input voltage ranges, isolated and bidirectional converter architectures that support hybrid energy storage integration, and intelligent optimization-based control approaches incorporating particle swarm optimization (PSO) and model predictive control (MPC). The review further identifies key trade-offs in efficiency, power density, voltage gain capability, and dynamic behavior across converter designs, providing a structured foundation for future development of high-performance fuel cell power conditioning systems.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the economic engineering aspects of predictive maintenance implementation in the manufacturing industry using a systematic literature review (SLR) approach. Literature searches were conducted through five databases, namely Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, IEEE Xplore, SpringerLink, and Emerald, using keywords related to predictive maintenance, manufacturing industry, engineering economy, cost-benefit analysis, return on investment, payback period, and life cycle cost. The article selection process followed the PRISMA 2020 framework and resulted in 25 final articles from 250 articles identified in the initial search. The findings show that predictive maintenance in manufacturing is commonly implemented through machine learning, IoT sensor monitoring, vibration analysis, digital twin, and condition-based monitoring. From an economic engineering perspective, these implementations contribute to downtime reduction, lower emergency maintenance costs, improved asset reliability, and better investment efficiency. However, most studies remain dominated by technical performance evaluation, while comprehensive economic indicators such as ROI, NPV, IRR, payback period, life cycle cost, and cost-benefit analysis are still limited. This study highlights the need to integrate technical performance and economic feasibility analysis in predictive maintenance decision-making.

Abstract
