Abstract

The interpretation of hadiths prohibiting cross-dressing, as found in classical sharḥ (commentary) literature, is limited to specific distinctions between male and female clothing and is no longer fully relevant to the contemporary phenomenon of unisex fashion. This article offers a contextualized rereading of the hadith using Fazlur Rahman’s double movement approach to uncover a more relevant moral meaning. It explores: (a) how classical sharḥ literature interprets the hadith; (b) the underlying considerations shaping those interpretations; and (c) how the hadith can be recontextualized in light of current fashion trends. Through qualitative library-based research, this study reveals that classical commentaries do not provide an interpretation that corresponds to the concept of unisex fashion, due to the absence of such a phenomenon in early Islam and the strong emphasis on gender identity. In today's context, which places a high value on aesthetics, the newly contextualized meaning suggests that wearing unisex clothing is not prohibited as long as the boundaries of gender identity remain clear.

Abstract

This study investigates the reception of Hadiths through YouTube shorts, a feature that facilitates short-form video content, appealing particularly to younger audiences and allowing for easier message absorption. The research is grounded in the rapid development of digital media, which significantly affects the transmission and reception of religious messages, especially Hadith. Two main questions are addressed: (1) What are the forms of Hadith reception and audience responses on the YouTube shorts account @anitaintan? (2) What is the sentiment toward Hadith-related content on this account? This qualitative study employs field and library research methods. Primary data were collected by identifying Hadith content on @anitaintan, selected based on upload frequency and subscriber count. Secondary data includes relevant literature and Hadith texts. Data were gathered through documentation, including screenshots and analysis of comments from uploaded videos. The analysis utilizes Marshall McLuhan’s new media theory and Ahmad Rafiq’s Hadith reception framework. McLuhan emphasizes the influence of the medium on message reception, while Rafiq classifies Hadith reception into exegetical, aesthetic, and functional types. The findings indicate that the shift from textual to visual Hadith presentation allows for greater flexibility in reception. The content creator’s engaging style enhances message delivery, making Hadith more accessible. Positive responses dominated all five videos analyzed, with negative comments appearing in only two, and neutral responses exceeding negative ones. These results suggest that digital platforms like YouTube shorts provide a contemporary space for Hadith dissemination, enabling broader engagement, especially among younger viewers.

Abstract

The emergence of ChatGPT as a new technology capable of addressing various religious issues, particularly in Hadith studies, presents new challenges for Hadith scholars in preserving the authenticity and sanctity of Hadith. This study aims to evaluate the accuracy of ChatGPT in assessing the validity of sanad and matan by comparing its analysis of five selected hadiths with the book Jawami’ul Kalim. Using a descriptive-analytical method, the research refers to the concept of "Rules for the Validity of Sanad Hadith" by Syuhudi Ismail. The findings reveal that while ChatGPT can provide preliminary analysis on the validity of hadiths, its evaluation is limited to the information available in its database. The analysis tends to be descriptive and lacks the depth found in Jawami’ul Kalim. ChatGPT's understanding of ulumul hadith is inconsistent, often producing incorrect or unverified answers, and it fails to cite reliable sources. In contrast, Jawami’ul Kalim offers more comprehensive and accurate takhrij with credible references. Therefore, while ChatGPT shows potential as a supportive tool in Hadith studies—especially in early-stage exploration—it cannot replace scholars or classical references. Expert guidance remains essential to ensure the accuracy and reliability of its assessments.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the evolution of the study of hadith sanad criticism with the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach, especially in the context of the use of Lidwa Pusaka Hadith software as a tool in sanad analysis. The main focus of this research is how paradigm shifts and methods in sanad criticism occur along with the development of digital technology, as well as the extent to which Lidwa Pusaka contributes to the effectiveness and accuracy of sanad studies. The methodology of this study uses the Systematic Literature Review approach with steps of identification, selection, data extraction, and synthesis from various relevant literature published in the period 2016–2020. Inclusion criteria include journal articles, proceedings, and thesis/thesis/dissertation that discusses sanad criticism, digital hadith studies, and the use of Lidwa Pusaka software in Islamic studies. The data collection technique is carried out by examining scientific documents through academic databases such as Google Scholar, DOAJ, and Garuda. Meanwhile, the data analysis technique is carried out through thematic analysis, by grouping data into main themes related to the development of sanad criticism methodology and the role of digital software, especially Lidwa Pusaka, in supporting hadith research. The results of the study show that there has been a significant evolution in the approach to sanad criticism, from a conventional approach to a software-based digital approach. Lidwa Pusaka specifically acts as an effective means of accessing matan and sanad hadith systematically and quickly, thus helping to speed up the process of verification and classification of hadith. The conclusion of this study emphasizes the importance of integrating technology in Islamic studies, as well as opening up new space for the development of a more efficient, accurate, and inclusive methodology of hadith criticism.

Abstract

This study examines how hadiths were misinterpreted and politicized within the realm of practical politics in Indonesia, with a particular focus on the 212 Movement and the 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial election. It seeks to analyze different ways hadiths were utilized for political purposes during the 212 Movement and how this influenced Ahok’s electability. Using a literature review approach, the research incorporates Domke and Coe’s theory of religious politicization and Vedi R. Hadiz’s concept of Islamic populism to understand how religious texts—especially hadiths—were employed to rally public support. The study identifies four key methods of hadith politicization: altering context, misinterpreting meanings, selectively citing supportive hadiths, and using them as tools for mass mobilization. While the politicization of hadiths was not the sole factor behind Ahok’s declining electability, it played a contextual role in shaping public opinion—evident through memes, posters, banners, digital content, and social media hashtags. The research also underscores the influence of digital news outlets and mainstream media in framing the narrative around the 212 Movement and swaying public sentiment. In conclusion, the politicization of hadiths significantly affected Indonesia’s political landscape, especially during the events surrounding the 2017 Jakarta election.
