Abstract

This study examines the tube expansion process in heat exchangers at PT IHI Power Service Indonesia using the heavy expand method with a pneumatic expander. As a subsidiary of Japan’s IHI Corporation, the company focuses on repair, maintenance, and fabrication for the power generation industry in Indonesia. The research aims to understand the tube expansion process, the function and operation of the expander tool, and factors that affect work quality and efficiency. The fabrication process includes technical design, material processing, assembly, and component testing. Data were obtained through direct observation, interviews, and technical documentation. Results show that the pneumatic expander improves joint quality and reliability compared to conventional methods. This expansion technique ensures tight connections between tubes and tube sheets, which is essential for heat exchanger performance. The study also highlights the importance of proper torque control and operator training in maintaining process consistency. Overall, the use of pneumatic expansion tools enhances fabrication standards and supports operational efficiency in power plant systems. The findings are expected to contribute to improving productivity at PT IHI Power Service Indonesia and serve as a reference for similar industries focused on heat exchanger fabrication and maintenance.

Abstract

The palm oil industry in Indonesia plays a strategic role in the national economy. One of the important machines in the palm oil processing process is the thresher machine, which functions to separate loose fruit from the fruit bunches. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of the Rotary Drum Stripper type thresher machine at PT. Murini Sam Sam II with a capacity of 30 tons per hour, using the Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) method. The OEE method measures equipment performance based on three main parameters: Availability, Performance, and Quality. Data were collected through observations, interviews, and operational documentation during 10 days of observation (August 6–15, 2024). The analysis results showed an average Availability value of 90%, Performance of 82%, and Quality reaching 100%. The total OEE value was 73.8%, which is still below the world-class standard of 85%. The decrease in effectiveness was mainly due to variability in production speed. Therefore, improvements are needed in the aspects of preventive maintenance, operator training, and sustainable TPM implementation.

Abstract

The operational performance of a Gas and Steam Power Plant (PLTGU) is largely determined by its cycle thermal efficiency. Specific fuel consumption (SFC) is a key metric that represents the ratio of total fuel consumption to generated electrical power. This study aims to analyze the SFC value and its tendency towards maximum load. The method used is quantitative by processing steady-state operational data from the central control room (CCR). Data were taken under operating conditions with natural gas fuel and maximum load. The calculation results show a very narrow and stable variation in SFC values, ranging from the lowest to 0.30769 kg/kWh at a load of 19.88 MW to the highest at 0.30967 kg/kWh at a load of 20.01 MW. Theoretically, efficiency (indicated by a decrease in SFC) should increase with increasing load. The anomalous increase in SFC at 20.01 MW at 10:00 a.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB) is interpreted as a result of the fuel injection system's rapid response to the sudden increase in load, or the engine operating slightly outside its design efficiency range at that point. Nevertheless, the overall trend shows stable efficiency, with a tendency for SFC to decrease with increasing load, indicating the unit is capable of maintaining optimal performance under peak load conditions.

Abstract

Centrifugal pumps are the main component in pumping systems that are widely applied in industry, agriculture, and practical activities in engineering laboratories. This study aims to design and build a centrifugal pump tester with single, series, and parallel configurations as a learning medium in the Mechanical Engineering Laboratory. This tool uses two National TRANS GP-125 pump units with a discharge specification of 30 L/minute and a power of 125 W. The research method includes the stages of design, fabrication, testing, and technical calculations including total head, major and minor pressure losses, and impeller dimension analysis. The test results show that the parallel configuration increases the discharge capacity, while the series configuration is superior in producing higher heads. The system efficiency reaches 69%, still within the standard range of pump efficiency (63–84%). This study produces interactive learning media that can help students understand the working principles of centrifugal pumps and the effect of system configuration on hydraulic performance.

Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the quality of crimped connections in the wire harness manufacturing sector. Three methods were used in the connection process, but this analysis only used the semi automatic crimping method, and in general, the crimping results are applied to electronic devices, therefore the quality of the conection must also be considered carefully and must comply with the crimping specifications. Therefore, the result of this test were analysed to determine the quality of the semi automatic crimping process. The quality of the crimping results is greatly influenced by the combination of terminal type, cable size, and preassure. Meanwhile, the pull force test or pull-out test is used to meanwhile, the mechanical strength of the connection. Then the maximum tensile force value obtained indicates the quality and reliability of the crimped connection. In this study, three types of terminals were used, namely AMP-1318105-1,AMP-175217-5, and AMP-1-175218-5, each of which was combined with wire measuring AWG 24,22, 20, and 18. The test results showed that the combination of the AMP-1-175218-5 terminal with AWG 18 wire produced the highest tensile strength of 15,9 kgf, while the combination of the AMP-1318105-1 terminal with AWG 24 wire produced he lowest tensile strength, but still above the minimum standard that the wire size and type of terminal have a significant influence on the tensile strength of the conection. The larger the wire size, the higher the resulting tensile strength value. Thus, selecting the right combination of terminals and wires is very important to ensure the quality and reliability of electrical connections in the wire harness industry.
