Abstract

Javanese grasshopper (Valanga nigricornis) attacks in Java during 1913-1917 were not merely ecological disasters, but rather catalysts for complex epistemic debates among colonial elites in the pages of De Indische Mercuur. Through intertextual analysis, this research reveals how the epistemic positions of the key actors: Dr. W. Roepke (entomologist), J. Th. White (agricultural expert), G. J. Vink (agricultural extension officer), and L. E. Dom van Rombeek (administrator) were shaped not by individual preferences, but by institutional thinking and relations of power in knowledge production. The debate, reflecting contestation between Roepke's biological determinism and White's agronomic solutionism, exposes structural gaps between science and field practice. The politics of representation in this dialogue reveals tensions between the interests of large-scale plantation economies (coffe and rubber) and small-scale peasant economies (coconut, corn, and cassava). Analysis of White's boundary work demonstrates attempts to claim epistemological autonomy for agronomy through empirical field evidence. Paradoxically, despite both sides acknowledging the effectiveness of local peasant practices, colonial knowledge narratives consistently excluded the agency and local knowledge of Bumiputra peasants, transforming the mobilization of peasant labor into mere extractive labor without recognition of their intellectual contributions. This research demonstrates that fragmentation of colonial knowledge was not simply academic epistemic anxieties, but rather a manifestation of systematic epistemological hegemony.

Abstract

Abstract

Based on Presidential Decree No. 4 of 1993, the Javanese-hawk eagle (Nisaetus bartelsi) is a national animal and is classified as an endangered species. The conservation of the Javanese eagle is experiencing dynamics both in terms of habitat and population. The Javanese-hawk eagle has a tendency to choose primary forest as its habitat. The existence of primary forests intersects with social life on the island of Java because primary forests are not always in line with human needs. The purpose of this study is to provide an explanation of the conservation of the Javanese-hawk eagle from 1993 to 2020. This research is intended to provide an overview of the preservation of Javanese-hawk eagles in the future by reflecting on their preservation in the past using historical methods consisting of heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography. Javanese-hawk eagle conservation is found in several places such as Mount Gede Pangrango National Park, Alas Purwo National Park, and conservation areas around mountains in Java. The Javanese-hawk eagle population from 1993 to 2020 was dynamic due to habitat availability, preservation, and breeding period for the Javanese-hawk eagle. The preservation of the Javanese-hawk eagle requires awareness from various parties because it requires proper regulations and implementation. This research is expected to be a guide for the preservation of Javanese-hawk eagles in the future by reflecting on the perspective of the past.

Abstract

The Student Movement has a long history since back to colonial times. The Student Movement is formed from students who have thoughts of change which then form a movement to make corrections, criticisms and changes in the social, political and government fields. The Student Movement during the New Order was seen as being in a depressed position, but on the other hand, in fact the Student Movement had a good relationship with the New Order at the beginning of the New Order. The Student Movement can be said to have contributed to the birth of the New Order through demonstrations, one of which was the Tritura action in 1966. The formation of a harmonious relationship between the Student Movement which was known to be critical and the militaristic New Order did not happen suddenly, but there were several factors that contributed to it. behind it. This study tries to analyze and reveal the factors that caused the Student Movement to have a harmonious relationship with the New Order while at the same time revealing the causes of the harmonious relationship rift that caused the Students and their Movement to experience extraordinary repression and intervention from the New Order
