Abstract

This study aims to examine the efforts to revitalize the function of Lawang Sewu, transforming it from a building known for its mystical image into a museum utilizing digital technology in the modern era. One of the main focuses of this research is the importance of preserving heritage buildings to raise public awareness, unlock economic potential through tourism, and serve as a symbol of local identity. The study employs a historical method, beginning with data collection from primary sources, both written and oral. Written primary sources were found in the Suara Merdeka newspaper and official decrees issued in the same year. Oral primary sources were gathered through interviews with six museum management staff and ten visitors to the Lawang Sewu Museum. The findings reveal the success of digital technology implemented by PT. KAI and the museum management. Moreover, the building has successfully adapted to the challenges of modern times through physical restoration, repurposing, and rebranding, effectively shedding its mystical image. Restoration efforts involved physical repairs, the addition of accessibility facilities, and the inclusion of artifacts relevant to the history of Indonesian railways. Modern technological applications, such as video mapping, immersive exhibitions, and virtual tours, have significantly enhanced the museum's appeal, particularly for the younger generation accustomed to digital technology.

Abstract

This study discusses the Incang-incang Tradition of the Pedamaran Village Community, Ogan Komering Ilir 2001-2023. The incang-incang tradition is a local product of the South Sumatra region that has not been widely introduced to the Indonesian people. Incang-incang is a poem in the form of pantun, expressed in a regular tone and using the Panesak language as the everyday language of the Pedamaran community. This study aims to describe the Incang-incang Tradition of the Pedamaran Village Community, Ogan Komering Ilir 2001-2023. The type of research used is historical research. The method of collecting research data is obtained through observation, interviews and document searches or literature studies. In the Incang-incang tradition, it is used as a form of entertainment for the Pedamaran community which can be done with or without reciprocation, and can also be accompanied by musical instruments such as guitars. The results of the study show that the Incang-incang Tradition has been present in the community since 1980 because the community began to do incang-incang so that many people liked it, until in 2001 it began to be implemented in certain activities in the community. Over time, Incang-incang became increasingly well-known as evidenced by the large number of speakers at that time who could speak Incang-incang. However, Incang-incang did not get the proper form of recognition for the young people of Pedamaran society. So, nowadays there are only a few speakers of incang-incang and they are dominated by the elderly. From the results of this study, it is hoped that incang-incang can be pursued harder so that it can be enjoyed by the younger generation through several performances organized by the local government. Therefore, it is hoped that Incang-incang can become the pride of the Pedamaran community as an entertainment activity for the community itself.

Abstract

This article describes the spread of and response to HIV in Semarang City, particularly from 2013, when Semarang City Regional Regulation No. 4/2013 was issued, until 2021, when the Komisi Penanggulangan AIDS (KPA) Semarang City was merged into the Dinas Kesehatan Kota (DKK) Semarang. The average number of HIV cases that occurred in Semarang City during 2013-2021 was 535. This paper aims to examine how the conditions of Semarang City affect the spread of HIV, as well as how the HIV-AIDS response was carried out by the Semarang City government from the beginning of the issuance of Semarang City Regional Regulation Number 4 of 2013 until the dissolution of Semarang City KPA in 2021. The method used in this research is the historical research method, in the form of: collecting sources (heuristics); verifying the sources found (source criticism); interpreting the sources (interpretation); and presenting in written form (historiography). During the writing process, the author collected various types of sources ranging from interviews, archives, books, and journal articles obtained from various related institutions through both offline and online processes. The author also conducted direct research in the field. The results of this paper map the distribution of PLWHA by health center, explain the development of VCT services in Semarang City, HIV cases from 2013-2021, and government efforts in tackling HIV/AIDS in Semarang City. Semarang City, which often holds the first position of the largest number of HIV cases throughout Central Java, continues to maximize the HIV prevention process. The increasing number of cases is considered the success of the government and its staff in reaching PLHIV through VCT programs that are routinely carried out in health facilities. Programs conducted by the city government in collaboration with agencies included in the KPA membership can be said to be increasingly efficient every year. Various prevention activities that directly approach Key Populations (Populasi Kunci/Ponci) have been carried out until now

Abstract

Trains are a means of mass transportation that may be familiar to the wider community. This mode is a means of transportation that is often chosen by many people to travel somewhere. The construction of rails which are part of the foundation on which train wheels stand in Indonesia has been carried out since the colonial era, pioneered by the Naamloze Venootschap Nederlandsch Indische Spoorweg Maatschappij (NV.NISM). The railway network was built based on the abundance of agricultural products since the implementation of the forced cultivation system, requiring transportation equipment that is strong and fast to carry heavy loads. The city of Magelang, as part of the Kedu Residency area, is the intersection of several cities which were planting areas for various colonial trade commodities.  This research focuses on how the station in Magelang functions, which is connected to various cities, and how the lives of the people around the Magelang station will be after the network operates in the area. The aim of this research is to determine the sustainability of the station in Magelang and the impact it has on the lives of the surrounding community. The method used is the historical research method, including source collection (heuristics), source criticism (verification), interpretation (tafsir), and also historiography. The research results show that train stations, especially market stations in Magelang played an important role in the development of the local economy during the colonial period. Pasar Station is a symbol of long-standing socio-economic development. The emergence of economic activity around these stations is driven by several key factors, including increased mobility, goods transportation, and social interaction.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) and the Indonesian Farmers' Front (BTI) in garnering farmers' sympathy by assisting them in gaining access to land. Their efforts were carried out through the implementation of the government’s land reform policy. In this study, the author collected and organized data through library research, including archives, books, journals, newspapers, articles, and relevant websites. Land, as the primary source of livelihood for the majority of the population working as farmers. Despite achieving independence for 15 years, most Indonesian farmers in 1960–1963 still faced challenges in accessing land. Data indicate that 60% of farmers were landless, while large-scale land ownership remained concentrated in the hands of a small elite. The Indonesian government sought to address this inequality through land reform policies established under the Basic Agrarian Law (UUPA) of 1960. The findings of this study reveal that the PKI and BTI actively advocated for agrarian reform and fought for the rights of poor farmers.

Abstract

Flooding is a phenomenon that often occurs in Indonesia. Floods have a significant impact on people's lives. Flood events that often occur in various regions lead the author to examine more deeply related to flood events and forms of disaster mitigation, especially in the Trenggalek area. In the process, the purpose of this research is to historically analyse flood disasters in Trenggalek in 2006-2022. The method in this research uses historical research methods using five steps, namely topic selection, heuristics, source criticism, interpretation and historiography. The results prove that Trenggalek is one of the areas where flooding often occurs every year. The floods are caused by several factors that have a huge impact on people's lives, both material and immaterial losses in the form of casualties, property and can even paralyse the socio-economic activities of the community. This study shows related flood events from 2006 to 2022 that occurred in Trenggalek and the efforts made by the government and the community as a form of disaster mitigation that is more systematic as flood management.

Abstract

This paper analyzes the victory of the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) Party in the 1971 General Election in Surabaya Regency as part of the local political dynamics during the early New Order period. Using a political history approach and a qualitative-descriptive method, the article examines the social, cultural, and political strategies that contributed to NU's success. Data were collected through literature review, archival documentation, and interviews with historical witnesses and community leaders. The findings indicate that the network of Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) and traditional clerics (kiai) played a crucial role in consolidating grassroots support, while the post-G30S social climate and public distrust toward secular parties further strengthened NU’s position. These findings demonstrate that, despite the pressure of a New Order regime that supported Golkar, traditional Islamic cultural forces were still able to carve out political victories at the local level. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of how local cultural power can persist and even triumph within a centralized political system.

Abstract

The conquest of the Banda Islands by the Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie (VOC) between 1609 and 1621 began with the arrival of the VOC in the Banda Islands in 1609, which marked the beginning of a systematic attempt to take control of the spice trade, especially nutmeg. The purpose of this study is to analyse the steps taken by the VOC in controlling the Banda Islands, explain the impact of the VOC conquest on the people of the Banda Islands and the spice trade network, and examine the historical actor roles, such as Jan Pieterszoon Coen, in this event. This study uses historical methods with a qualitative approach, as well as a historical-descriptive design, to reconstruct past events. The findings of this study show that the VOC implemented aggressive military strategies, including fortifications and massacres of local populations, as occurred in the Battle of Banda Neira Island, the Battle of Ay Island, the Battle of Rhun Island, and the Battle of Lontor Island. The impact of this conquest was severe, causing a drastic depopulation in the Banda Islands at the time, so that an estimated 90 percent of the indigenous population of the Banda Islands died. The VOC then repopulated the population with slaves to maintain plantation productivity in the Banda Islands.

Abstract

In 1966, Suharto replaced Sukarno as the second President of the Republic of Indonesia. During his leadership, newspapers that had previously been banned under Sukarno’s administration were allowed to resume publication. This study aims to describe the role of newspapers as a medium of social criticism during the early phase of the New Order’s political consolidation, leading up to the events of January 15, 1974. The research employs a historical method. It explores the transition from Guided Democracy to the New Order, the process of the regime’s consolidation, the role of newspapers as a channel of social criticism between 1966 and 1974, and the New Order government's responses to criticisms raised by various press institutions. The study finds that although newspapers had some space to express criticism of the government during that period, the New Order regime imposed increasingly strict control over the press as authoritarianism strengthened.
