Abstract

This study analyzes the effectiveness of the Permit to Work (PTW) system in controlling potential hazards for workers at PT X. This pest control company handles various field operations with occupational safety risks. Using a comprehensive methodology combining literature review, interviews, and direct observations, the research examines three critical phases of the PTW implementation: planning, execution, and completion. The findings reveal that while PT X has established a basic PTW system with weekly permit issuance and risk identification procedures, several significant shortcomings exist in its implementation. Notably, the company's PTW documentation is merged with Job Safety Analysis (JSA), creating confusion among workers and potentially leading to miscommunication during hazardous operations. Additionally, the system lacks essential components such as equipment checklists, personal protective equipment verification, permit validity periods, and supporting work permits specific to different operations. Although the Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) team conducts regular monitoring to ensure compliance with safety protocols in the field, the study found that the consolidated documentation format compromises the optimal control of potential hazards. Despite these limitations, the permit closure process follows established procedures, including proper housekeeping, reporting to permit issuers and formal documentation signoff. This research contributes to occupational safety literature by highlighting the practical challenges in implementing PTW systems in specialized service industries. It emphasizes the importance of clear documentation separation and comprehensive checklist implementation to enhance workplace safety and prevent occupational accidents and injuries.

Abstract

The manufacturing industry, particularly steel pipe production, is strategically supporting infrastructure development and national economic growth. However, the production process involves various potential risks that can disrupt operational efficiency and endanger workplace safety. This study aims to analyze risk management applied to the production process at Indonesia Steel Tube Works (PT. X), identify the principal risks faced, and evaluate mitigation strategies implemented by the company. This research uses qualitative methods with descriptive research type to understand the risk management system process using the HIRADC (Hazard Identification Risk Assessment Determining Control) method. Data collection was conducted through direct observation and semi-structured interviews with workers. The results show that the four main production processes (Slitting Line, Pipe Making Line, Galvanizing, and Packing) contain various risks categorized as physical, chemical, ergonomic, and psychosocial hazards. Risk analysis revealed eight high-category risks, 20 moderate-category risks, and four low-category risks. Risk control is implemented through engineering control, administrative control, and personal protective equipment (PPE) following the risk control hierarchy. This study contributes to improving operational efficiency, strengthening workplace safety culture, and providing recommendations for developing more adaptive and sustainable risk management systems in the steel pipe manufacturing industry.

Abstract

The rapid growth of global maritime trade has increased the risk of occupational accidents at container terminals, necessitating a strong Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) system. This study aims to examine the relationship between the implementation of internal OHS audits, communication patterns, and hazard control at container terminals in Semarang City. Using a qualitative descriptive method with a case study approach, this research seeks to gain an in-depth understanding of the interplay among internal audits, communication, and hazard control. Data were collected through method triangulation, including in depth interviews, field observations, and document analysis, involving HSE staff, internal auditors, supervisors, and auditees. Data analysis was conducted using ATLAS.ti software through open coding, axial coding, and selective coding stages. The findings reveal that systematic internal audits, supported by integrated digital communication systems and structured discussion forums, significantly contribute to hazard control and worker compliance. The integration of audit processes and communication fosters a safety-oriented work culture and accelerates audit resolution. This study concludes that the synergy between routine audits and effective communication enhances the effectiveness of hazard control programs. The research contributes to OHS literature by presenting a comprehensive model integrating audit practices, communication strategies, and hazard control mechanisms.

Abstract

Accident has continued to be a significant problem to many people all over the world, including school-aged children which may be injured and may be subjected to live with the consequences of the injuries throughout their lifetimes. Hence, this study investigated the impact of safety education intervention on the knowledge of preventive practices of accident among pupils in Akoko-South Local Government Area, Ondo State (ASWLA). The Pre-test-post-test research design method was used for this study. The sample for this study was 60 respondents. A self-developed validated questionnaire was the instrument use for the study. Mean and Standard Deviation was used to answer the research questions, while t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) were used to test all hypotheses at 0.05 alpha level. The study indicated that Safety education intervention significantly have positive impact (t.cal =24.537 p= 0.05) on the knowledge of pupils in Ondo State. Also the study shows there is a significant impact of safety education intervention on accident prevention practice (t.cal =42.923p= 0.05) among the respondents. In addition, gender and religion have no significant influence on the knowledge and practice of accident prevention among pupils in the study area. It was concluded that safety education intervention had significant effect on knowledge and practice of accident prevention among pupils in the study area. It is recommended that safety education should be taught in schools especially from primary school level in order to instill in children safety knowledge and practices which will protect them from being a victim of accident.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to evaluate the level of laboratory safety practices among biology students and their teachers. The study was carried out in selected public and private senior secondary schools within Abeokuta, Nigeria. Data collection was facilitated through questionnaires titled "Students Laboratory Safety Practices (SLSP)" and "Teachers Laboratory Safety Practices Implementation (TLSPI)." A total of 256 participants, comprising 240 students and 16 teachers, were randomly selected using a simple random sampling method. The data obtained were analyzed employing T-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), with a significance level set at p < 0.05. The results indicated that both students and teachers in the public and private secondary schools adhered to safety precautions and implemented safety practices during laboratory practical sessions. Consequently, it is recommended that teachers persist in their efforts to reinforce laboratory safety practices among students and utilize instructional posters or flex materials that outline the necessary safety protocols to be followed in the laboratory.
