Abstract

Translators and researchers tend to document and translate different oral genres, namely, folktales. The present bibliographical article describes eighteen works that are devoted to translating Moroccan folktales into English by Moroccan and non-Moroccan translators. Following the chronological order of these translations, the article aims to provide researchers with an overview of these works by focusing on folktale types, the collection process, and the translation approaches adopted in each work. The article demonstrates that both Moroccan and non-Moroccan translators aim to record Moroccan orality in English and provide valuable material for academic researchers to investigate the translation of orality.

Abstract

The interactions between the verbal and nominal domains exhibit recurrent structural patterns that make it possible to establish systematic correlations across categories. Events are mapped onto temporal intervals by means of a trace function, while their participants are integrated into the event structure through thematic-role assignment. Making these mappings explicit allows the analysis to constrain the space of possible interpretations, ruling out unattested outcomes while preserving the compositional derivation of complex predicates. The empirical investigation is based on six morphologically related verb forms in Standard Arabic, organized into three pairs that share the same lexical root but differ in their morphological realization, thereby enabling a controlled comparison in which lexical content is held constant and only morphosyntactic variation is tested. Methodologically, the study combines aspectual diagnostics, such as compatibility with temporal adverbials and the distinction between cumulative and quantized readings, with syntactic tests on argument realization, in order to determine how morphological variation affects both argument structure and event composition. The results show, first, that telicity does not systematically correlate with the definiteness or boundedness of the internal argument; second, that alternations within each morphological pair allow identical nominal complements to yield both telic and atelic readings; and third, that distributive interpretations consistently shift event structure toward atelicity by preventing the formation of a single bounded event, even in the presence of quantized objects.

Abstract

Psychoanalytic approaches play an important role in literary criticism for examining the psychological complexity of characters. However, many studies remain general and do not explicitly analyze Freud’s structural model of personality within specific literary texts. This study aims to analyze the representation of the id, ego, and superego in The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger and to examine how their interaction shapes the development of the main character. This research employs a qualitative method using psychoanalytic literary analysis through close reading and thematic analysis. The data consist of selected textual units from the novel, including dialogue, narrative descriptions, and internal monologues that reflect the psychological conflicts of the protagonist, Holden Caulfield. The findings show that the id is represented through impulsive emotional reactions such as anger, alienation, and rejection of social norms, which initiate narrative tension. The ego appears in reflective moments where Holden evaluates his actions and attempts to negotiate between his desires and reality. Meanwhile, the superego is expressed through feelings of guilt, moral confusion, and concern for innocence, particularly in his interactions with his younger sister. These interactions contribute to the psychological development of the protagonist throughout the narrative. This study contributes to literary criticism by providing a text-specific psychoanalytic analysis and demonstrating how Freud’s structural model can be applied to interpret psychological conflict within a contemporary literary work.
