Abstract

National food security has become a top priority in Indonesia’s development policy, particularly in ensuring rice availability as a staple commodity. To address challenges such as population growth, land-use conversion, and fluctuations in rice production, the government launched the Simultaneous Rice Planting Program as a strategy to boost national rice productivity. This program targets 1.3 million hectares across 160 regencies, with an estimated output of 7.5 million tons of unhusked rice by April 2025. This study aims to analyze the implementation and technological preparedness of the simultaneous rice planting system at the Sarian Ilir Farmers Group (Poktan) in Jabon Hamlet, Menemeng Village, Central Lombok Regency as a case study. The region was chosen for its highest rice production rate in West Nusa Tenggara, despite a decline from 52.59 tons/ha in 2023 to 50.51 tons/ha in 2024. This research employed a qualitative case study approach, with data collected through semi-structured interviews, field observations, and documentation. Primary respondents included the Chairperson of Poktan Sarian Ilir, Poktan members, and the Chairperson of the Women Farmers Group (KWT) Jabon Berkarya. The study was conducted on 13.5 hectares of land using agricultural technologies such as Inpari 32 rice variety, legowo row planting system, and an intensive IP3 planting pattern. Program implementation involved collaboration between local government, the Department of Agriculture, Technical Implementation Units (UPT), agricultural extension agents, pest control officers (POPT), security forces (TNI/Polri), and local farmers. The findings are expected to offer a comprehensive evaluation of the program’s effectiveness and provide innovative recommendations to support sustainable food security at both local and national levels.

Abstract

Rice drying is a pivotal post-harvest operation that directly influences grain quality, storability, and market value. Conventional sun drying methods, while widely practiced, are highly dependent on weather conditions and often result in inconsistent moisture reduction. In response to these limitations, solar-powered heating systems offer a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative for controlled drying processes. This study presents a theoretical analysis of various solar heater design configurations and their potential impact on the efficiency of rice drying. The research adopts a literature-based approach, synthesizing findings from previous studies on solar collector geometry, heat absorber materials, insulation techniques, and airflow mechanisms. Thermodynamic principles, including heat transfer via conduction, convection, and radiation, serve as the analytical framework to evaluate the performance of different design models. Key parameters such as collector tilt angle, surface absorptivity, glazing properties, and thermal insulation are examined for their influence on drying temperature, humidity control, and drying rate. Findings indicate that optimal collector orientation, selective coating on absorber plates, and effective insulation significantly enhance thermal efficiency. Additionally, airflow systems—whether passive or active—play a crucial role in maintaining uniform temperature distribution and reducing relative humidity within the drying chamber. Simulated thermal models and empirical data from referenced studies suggest that solar-powered dryers can achieve moisture reduction levels that meet national standards for milled rice, with minimal energy input and reduced environmental impact. This theoretical investigation provides a conceptual foundation for the development of solar-based rice drying technologies tailored to tropical climates. It highlights the importance of integrated design strategies that combine thermal performance, material selection, and ergonomic considerations. The study aims to support future innovations in post-harvest processing and contribute to energy-efficient agricultural practices in rural communities.

Abstract

Probiotics are live microorganisms that, when consumed in adequate amounts, confer health benefits to the host, particularly in maintaining and enhancing digestive health. Research on probiotics has shown that their presence can help maintain the balance of gut microbiota, improve intestinal barrier function, and play a role in modulating both local and systemic immune systems. This article examines the role of probiotics from various genera, such as Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, and Saccharomyces, in supporting human digestive health, including their potential in preventing and managing gastrointestinal disorders such as diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Furthermore, the article discusses factors that influence the effectiveness of probiotics, such as dosage, duration of consumption, and strain compatibility with individual conditions. This review also highlights challenges in the development of probiotic products, including stability during storage and resistance to gastrointestinal conditions. Based on the available scientific evidence, probiotics hold great potential as adjunctive and preventive therapeutic agents for maintaining digestive system health. However, more large-scale, controlled clinical studies are needed to ensure the safety, effectiveness, and specific mechanisms of action of each probiotic strain within a broader human population context.

Abstract

Salt crystallization is a fundamental process that is greatly influenced by environmental conditions, including temperature, humidity, pressure, and atmospheric composition. This study aims to analyze salt crystallization patterns occurring under extreme environmental conditions, such as high temperatures, very low humidity, as well as hypersaline and low-temperature environments. The methods used include laboratory experiments with simulated extreme environments using a climate control chamber and microscopic analysis of the shape and structure of the resulting salt crystals. The research findings show that extreme environmental conditions significantly affect the morphology and growth rate of salt crystals. Under high temperatures and low humidity, crystals tend to form complex dendritic structures with higher growth rates. Conversely, at low temperatures and high pressure, crystals tend to form cubic shapes with denser structures and slower growth. Hypersaline environments exhibit unique crystallization patterns, including the formation of irregularly shaped crystals and non-homogeneous surface patterns. These findings are important for further understanding of natural geochemical processes in extreme environments such as salt deserts, hypersaline lakes, or extraterrestrial planets like Mars. In addition, the results can be applied to desalination technology and more efficient industrial salt production.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the ecological dynamics of pest populations and their impact on the growth of maize (Zea mays L.) in tropical regions. Conducted in Central Lombok Regency—one of the major maize-producing areas in West Nusa Tenggara—the research combines quantitative field surveys with ecological analysis to investigate the relationship between environmental factors and pest activity. Two dominant pest species, Stenocranus pacificus and Spodoptera frugiperda, were observed through population density measurements, climatic condition monitoring, and crop management evaluations. The results indicate that pest fluctuations are significantly influenced by temperature, humidity, and plant spacing. High pest density adversely affects plant height, number of productive leaves, and leaf area. These findings emphasize the importance of ecosystem-based pest management as a preventive and adaptive strategy to maintain sustainable maize productivity in tropical agricultural systems.

Abstract

Mixed Food Additives (Bahan Tambahan Pangan/BTP campuran) have been registered with the Indonesian National Agency of Drug and Food Control (BPOM) since 2012. However, specific regulations governing mixed BTPs were only issued in 2016 and came into effect in 2017. To date, no studies have examined the registered mixed BTPs. This research aims to identify the composition and distribution labels of mixed BTPs, evaluate their compliance with existing regulations, and assess their use by Home Industry Food Producers (Industri Rumah Tangga Pangan/IRTP). The study utilizes secondary data comprising the composition of mixed BTPs obtained from BPOM, and primary data in the form of distribution labels collected from supermarkets and baking supply stores in Jakarta. The findings reveal that 78% (494 out of 632) of registered mixed BTPs consist of flavoring and coloring agents. The composition of mixed BTPs is categorized into three groups: (1) primary BTPs, which serve technological functions in the final food product; (2) secondary BTPs, which serve technological functions within the mixed BTP formulation; and (3) other substances that influence the physical form of the mixed BTPs (liquid, solid, powder, or paste/semisolid).
