Abstract

This study aims to analyze fish consumption patterns among urban communities in Indonesia and their implications for national food policy. Using a survey method involving 400 respondents across four major cities, supported by in-depth interviews, the study finds that fish consumption in urban areas remains relatively low. Key influencing factors include limited access to fresh fish, fluctuating prices, and a preference for convenient foods. The most commonly consumed fish are freshwater species such as catfish and tilapia, while nutrient-rich marine fish are more commonly consumed by higher-income groups. The analysis also reveals a significant correlation between education level, income, and the frequency of fish consumption. These findings indicate the need for policies that promote fish consumption through nutrition education, strengthened food distribution systems, and innovation in affordable and practical processed fish products. Increasing fish consumption in urban areas holds substantial potential to support food security and improve community nutrition in a sustainable manner.

Abstract

Marine pollution is one of the major threats to the sustainability of fisheries resources, particularly demersal fish that inhabit the seabed. This study aims to analyze the relationship between the level of marine pollution and the sustainability of demersal fish in the coastal waters of X Regency, Y Province. A descriptive quantitative approach was used, involving primary data collection through water and sediment sampling, fish catch monitoring, and secondary data from related institutions. Laboratory analysis revealed that concentrations of heavy metals such as Hg, Pb, and Cd in several locations exceeded the marine environmental quality standards. A decline in dissolved oxygen (DO) levels and elevated total suspended solids (TSS) further worsened the condition of the benthic habitat. Catch data from local fishermen showed a consistent decline in both the quantity and size of demersal fish over the past five years. Correlation analysis indicated a significant negative relationship between pollution levels and fish catch. Spatial disparities were also observed, with areas farther from pollution sources showing better resource potential. These findings suggest that marine pollution directly affects both ecosystems and the socio-economic conditions of coastal communities. Therefore, integrated efforts are needed to control pollution and protect benthic habitats to ensure the sustainability of demersal fish resources.

Abstract

Conflict between traditional fishers and the fishing industry is a complex and frequent issue in coastal areas of Indonesia. This study aims to analyze the primary causes of the conflict, its impacts, and conflict management approaches that can foster sustainable and equitable fisheries resource management. A qualitative approach was employed, involving in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, participatory observations, and document analysis. The findings indicate that the conflict is mainly driven by unequal access to resources, differing interests between traditional fishers and the industry, and regulations that inadequately accommodate small-scale fishers. Conflict management based on co-management involving all stakeholders has proven effective in reducing tensions and enhancing the sense of ownership over marine resources. However, major challenges include economic and political power imbalances between traditional fishers and the industry. The study recommends strengthening community capacities, increasing participation in policymaking, and developing fair and inclusive regulations. Effective conflict management thus supports the sustainability of fisheries resources while improving the welfare of coastal communities.

Abstract

Fish is an important source of animal protein rich in essential nutrients such as protein and omega-3 fatty acids. However, the safety of fish consumption is a major concern due to potential contamination by heavy metals and pathogenic bacteria. This study aims to analyze the differences in nutritional content and safety levels of edible fish obtained from traditional and modern markets. Samples of Nile tilapia, catfish, and skipjack tuna were purposively collected from both market types and analyzed for protein, fat, omega-3 content, heavy metal concentration, and microbiological contamination using standard laboratory methods. The results indicate that fish from modern markets have slightly higher protein and omega-3 levels, while fish from traditional markets exhibit higher levels of heavy metal and bacterial contamination. These findings underscore the need for improved supervision and sanitation standards in traditional markets to ensure food safety. This study provides valuable information for consumers and policymakers in selecting and managing safe and high-quality fish for public health.

Abstract

Coral reef ecosystems are vital habitats for a wide range of marine species and hold significant ecological and economic value. However, uncontrolled and destructive fishing activities pose a major threat to the sustainability of these ecosystems. This study aims to analyze the impact of fishing activities on biodiversity in three coral reef areas in Indonesia: Raja Ampat, Wakatobi, and the Thousand Islands. A mixed-methods approach was employed, involving underwater surveys, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis. The results indicate that high fishing intensity negatively affects species diversity indices and live coral cover. Areas with effective conservation management exhibited healthier ecosystem conditions compared to those lacking adequate regulations. These findings highlight the importance of enforcement, community involvement, and gear restrictions in preserving coral reef biodiversity. This research contributes to the development of ecosystem-based and participatory strategies for sustainable marine resource management.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of temperature variations on the hatching rate and survival rate of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) larvae using an incubator system. The experimental method involved three temperature treatments: 26°C, 28°C, and 30°C. Parameters observed included hatching rate and survival rate over a six-day incubation period. The results showed that 28°C yielded the highest hatching rate at 51%, followed by 26°C at 22%, while no hatching occurred at 30°C. However, the survival rate across all treatments was recorded at 100%, indicating that larvae that hatched were able to survive well in the incubation environment. It can be concluded that temperature significantly affects the hatching success of Nile tilapia eggs, with the optimal incubation temperature being 28°C. These findings are expected to serve as a reference for improving hatchery efficiency through optimal temperature control in incubator systems.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the morphology and ecological functions of kiambang (Pistia stratiotes) as macro flora in stagnant aquatic ecosystems. The research was conducted through direct observation in an earthen pond in Mazingo Tabaloho Village with a descriptive approach. Observations revealed that Pistia stratiotes has characteristics such as light green leaves arranged in a rosette, hanging fibrous roots, and a floating growth method. This plant plays a significant role in absorbing excessive nutrients and heavy metals, while providing shelter for small organisms, thus supporting the balance of aquatic ecosystems. However, overpopulation can cause water quality degradation by covering the surface and reducing dissolved oxygen levels. Understanding the characteristics and ecological role of kiambang is key to supporting sustainable management of stagnant waters.

Abstract

This study aims to observe the physical parameters of the Boyo River waters in order to assess the water quality and condition of the river's aquatic ecosystem. Observations were carried out at several observation points along the Boyo River by measuring physical parameters including temperature, pH, turbidity, salinity, and water flow velocity. The results showed that the water temperature in the Boyo River tends to fluctuate depending on the season, with higher temperatures in the dry season. The pH value of the water is mostly within the normal range, although there are indications of a decrease in pH at several points that can be influenced by domestic waste and agricultural activities. Water turbidity is relatively high, especially in areas close to settlements and agricultural land, indicating sedimentation and pollution. Water salinity shows low values at most points, except in the downstream of the river which is affected by seawater intrusion. The speed of water flow varies, with higher speeds in the upstream and slower downstream. Based on the results of observations, the water quality of the Boyo River shows challenges related to pollution and seasonal changes, which affect the balance of the ecosystem. Therefore, continuous monitoring and better management of water quality are needed to support the sustainability of the ecosystem and the utilization of river aquatic resources.
