Abstract

This research was conducted to understand the extent to which excessive vibration can affect bearing damage and shaft misalignment in a ship's main engine. Uncontrolled vibration is often a primary cause of damage in machinery systems, particularly in moving or rotating components. In this case study, the approaches used included direct observations and vibration amplitude measurements at several critical points, such as the shaft and bearings. The measurement results indicated that the vibration amplitudes at Bearing 1, Bearing 2, and Shaft B exceeded the allowable standard threshold, indicating significant wear and misalignment. These findings are consistent with previous studies that have shown a strong correlation between increased machine component vibration and a higher risk of failure. Based on this, the study emphasizes the importance of routine vibration monitoring as a preventive measure to detect damage early and avoid more severe operational disruptions. By implementing an effective vibration monitoring system, the reliability of the machinery system can be improved, and the service life of the ship's main engine can be extended.

Abstract

Abstract

Noise and vibration caused by ship engines and propulsion systems can cause various health problems for crew members, such as hearing loss, muscle pain, fatigue, and stress. This study uses a quantitative method with a case study approach on cargo ships operating in international waters. Noise measurements were carried out using a sound level meter, while vibration measurements used a vibration meter at three main points, namely the engine room, ship deck, and control room. In addition, questionnaires were given to 50 crew members to identify their health complaints. The results showed that the noise level in the engine room reached 85-100 dB, while the vibration level in the engine room was 1.2-1.8 m/s², which exceeded the safe limit recommended by WHO. The most common health impacts experienced by crew members were hearing loss (42%), muscle and joint pain (38%), and fatigue and insomnia (35%). This study recommends that shipping companies pay attention to the health aspects of crew members by introducing noise and vibration reduction policies, and providing adequate protection facilities. In addition, it is important to increase crew awareness of the health risks due to exposure to noise and vibration in the ship's work environment.

Abstract

Ships are a means of transportation used to transport people or goods. Ships are often used for the needs of transporting large quantities of goods over long distances. One of the factors considered in the ship design process is ship vibration. Vibration is a periodic or repeated movement after a certain time interval called the period. Vibration on the ship is something that has a significant influence on the structural resistance and comfort of the crew. Vibration analysis needs to be carried out to ensure the durability of the ship's construction. Ship construction that is unable to withstand the vibrations it experiences is at high risk of structural failure. Vibration on the ship is also something that can only be dampened and cannot be completely eliminated. The vibrations that occur can cause damage to the ship's structure, components, both machinery and electronics, and can affect the comfort of the crew or passengers.

Abstract

Watugong Village, located in Alok Timur District, Sikka Regency, is a traditional agricultural area where maize serves as both a staple crop and an integral part of local cultural heritage. However, post-harvest processing—particularly the shelling of maize kernels from the cob—is still conducted manually, leading to inefficiency and reduced grain quality. Attempts at mechanization through modern machines have often proven unsuitable due to their high cost, complexity, and incompatibility with the needs of small-scale farmers. To address this issue, the Mechanical Engineering Department of Politeknik Cristo Re developed a 20 kg-capacity maize shelling machine that is ergonomic, affordable, and easy to operate. Powered by a 0.75 kW electric motor, the machine employs a transmission system comprising pulleys, V-belts, and a silent chain, enabling it to increase shelling efficiency by more than 4.5 times compared to manual methods. Performance tests show a shelling capacity of up to 400 kg/hour with minimal kernel damage. The novelty of this machine lies in its participatory design approach and use of locally available materials and components. This innovation serves as a tangible example of appropriate technology grounded in local wisdom, supporting improved productivity, farmer self-reliance, and sustainable food security in rural communities.

Abstract

Climate change is a global issue that has multidimensional impacts on human life, including in Indonesia. In response to this challenge, the government developed the Climate Village Program (PROKLIM) which prioritizes community empowerment through a community-based approach. This program aims to strengthen climate change adaptation and mitigation efforts through participatory local resource management. This study uses the K-Means clustering method to group areas based on environmental characteristics at the Neighborhood Association (RW) level, in order to identify patterns and support decision making in effective environmental management. This study proves that the K-Means Clustering method is effective in grouping RWs in South Jakarta based on indicators relevant to the Climate Village Program (ProKlim). The latest report from the World Meteorological Organization (2024) states that 2023 was the hottest year in history, with an anomaly (Hasbullah & Assyahri, 2025) of global temperatures reaching 1.45°C above the average temperature in the pre-industrial era. Furthermore, the last nine years (2015–2023) were recorded as the period with the hottest consecutive temperatures in the history of climate records. The segmentation results show clear differences between groups in terms of levels of vulnerability to climate change, community engagement, and environmental preparedness. This grouping provides a strong, data-driven analytical basis, allowing the South Jakarta Environmental Agency (DLH) to use it as a strategic reference for more targeted and targeted planning and implementation of ProKlim.
