Abstract

Background: Indonesia’s multicultural society requires religious moderation to maintain harmony and prevent extremism. As a non-formal Islamic educational institution, Majelis Taklim plays a strategic role in fostering moderate religious attitudes and strengthening social cohesion at the grassroots level. Objective: This study aims to analyse the role, strategies, and contributions of Majelis Taklim in instilling religious moderation values within the Griya Sidomulyo community, Pekanbaru City. Method: This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation involving administrators, preachers, congregants, and community leaders. Data were analysed through reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, supported by triangulation to ensure validity. Results: The findings indicate that Majelis Taklim actively promotes moderation values through regular religious study sessions, thematic discussions, and social programs such as Jumat Berkah (Friday Charity Program) and Didikan Subuh (Early Morning Religious Education Program). These activities cultivate tolerance, balance, mutual respect, and social solidarity. Supporting factors include active participation, qualified preachers, and strong community engagement, while financial constraints and coordination challenges remain obstacles. Conclusion: Majelis Taklim functions as an effective grassroots institution for cultivating religious moderation and strengthening social harmony in heterogeneous urban communities. Originality/Value: This study provides empirical and contextual novelty in the field of nonformal Islamic education and community sociology by revealing the effectiveness of integrating thematic da'wah programs and social community initiatives such as Friday Charity and Early Morning Religious Education alongside community leader engagement regarding the cultivation of religious moderation values within the context of grassroots learning assemblies in heterogeneous urban housing communities, which has received limited scholarly attention compared to formal educational settings. These findings enrich empirical evidence and serve as a strategic reference in grassroots religious governance, empowering community based religious institutions, and formulating social cohesion initiatives at the neighborhood level.

Abstract

Background: Strengthening religious moderation in Indonesia’s pluralistic society requires the optimisation of wisdom as a durable foundation for social harmony. One of the most deeply rooted cultural traditions reflecting collective solidarity is gotong royong (cooperation). In the context of increasing social fragmentation, identity politics, and religious polarisation, our cultural values are becoming increasingly relevant to reinforce inclusive and balanced religious expressions. Objective: This study aims to analyse the theoretical relationship between the tradition of gotong royong and religious moderation, and to explain how embedded cultural values shape inclusive, tolerant, and socially responsible religious practices. Method: This research employs a qualitative literature review, systematically examining 15 relevant peer-reviewed articles. The collected data were analysed analyzedntent analysis techniques to identify recurring themes, conceptual patterns, and theoretical linkages between cultural practices and religious moderation. Result: The findings reveal that gotong royong functions not merely as a communal activity but also as a value-laden social mechanism that internalises solidarity, equilibrium, and principles of collective responsibility, which resonate strongly with religious moderation. It also strengthens social cohesion and mitigates potential conflict in multicultural settings. Conclusion: The tradition of gotong royong constitutes a concrete manifestation of religious moderation grounded in local wisdom and plays a strategic role in sustaining social harmony. Originality/Value: This review study provides theoretical and conceptual novelty in the field of cultural sociology and religious moderation by synthesizing scholarship on gotong royong not merely as communal physical labor but as a value-laden mechanism that internalizes solidarity, equilibrium, and collective responsibility regarding inclusive religious practices and conflict mitigation within the context of indigenous local wisdom, which has received limited systematic theoretical examination. These findings enrich conceptual frameworks and serve as a strategic reference in formulating culturally rooted social policy frameworks, community conflict resolution models, and sustainable peacebuilding initiatives in pluralistic societies.

Abstract

Background: Indonesia’s cultural diversity creates complex challenges for sustaining religious harmony. The film Tanda Tanya (?) depicts interfaith interactions and social tensions that reflect these challenges in contemporary Indonesian society. Objective: This study examines how the film represents religious moderation and principles of good governance, emphasising the relationship among individual behaviour, community values, and social stability. Method: A qualitative content analysis was conducted, focusing on scenes, dialogues, character interactions, and conflict patterns to identify indicators of moderation and governance practices. Results: The film illustrates tolerance, interfaith cooperation, non-violence, and respect for human dignity, alongside community participation, fairness, and rejection of discrimination. Unresolved conflicts in the narrative reveal vulnerabilities and social tensions when moderation values are absent. Conclusion: Religious moderation provides a foundation for inclusive, stable, and effective social governance, while its absence can lead to imbalance and conflict. Originality/Value: This study provides conceptual and analytical novelty in the field of political communication sociology and religious cinema studies by revealing how religious moderation values such as tolerance, interfaith cooperation, nonviolence, and social justice intersect with principles of good governance regarding public stability in the democratic era within the context of popular Indonesian cinema, which has received limited scholarly attention as an instrument of governance reflection. These findings enrich qualitative evidence and serve as a strategic reference in utilizing creative film media for public education, informing multicultural policy discourses, and strengthening social cohesion in a pluralistic public sphere.

Abstract

Background: This article is grounded in the reality that interfaith dialogue practices in plural societies tend to be formalistic, elitist, and confined to theological discourse, and therefore have not fully addressed the challenges of intolerance, social polarisation, and disinformation. Objective: This study aims to reconstruct the concept of interfaith dialogue from the perspective of religious moderation to make it more inclusive, contextual, and applicable. Method: The research employs a qualitative method with a constructive-critical approach, grounded in a literature review, and is analysed through stages of deconstruction, critical-comparative analysis, and conceptual reconstruction. Result: The findings indicate the need for a shift in the orientation of dialogue from symbolic-theological to social-transformative, integrating the values of tawazun (balance), tasamuh (tolerance), i‘tidal (justice), and national commitment. The proposed dialogue model is inclusive and participatory, relational and empathetic, and adaptive to contemporary challenges, including those in the digital sphere. Conclusion: Reconstructing interfaith dialogue based on religious moderation can strengthen social cohesion and national harmony. Originality/Value: This study provides theoretical and epistemological novelty in the field of religious conflict resolution and peace sociology by revealing the necessity of shifting the interfaith dialogue paradigm from an elitist, formalistic, and theological discourse toward a socially transformative praxis anchored in tawazun, tasamuh, i'tidal, and civic commitment regarding the mitigation of intolerance and polarization within the context of pluralistic societies in the digital era, which has received limited applied theoretical formulation. These findings reconstruct existing conceptual frameworks and serve as a strategic reference, contributing to the development of participatory interfaith engagement models, the design of actionable communal harmony roadmaps, and the formulation of adaptive religious moderation policies.

Abstract

Background: Religious polarisation on social media has become a serious challenge in plural societies, marked by the proliferation of hate speech, misinformation, and exclusive religious interpretations that intensify social fragmentation. Objective: This study aims to analyse Qur’anic values as a foundation for religious communication ethics in responding to the dynamics of religious polarisation in digital spaces. Method: The research employs a qualitative approach using thematic exegesis (maudhu‘i). The data are derived from Qur’anic verses related to the principles of moderation (wasathiyah), freedom of religion, human pluralism, tabayyun (information verification), ethics of dialogue, and peaceful relations with non-Muslims. The analysis is conducted through a comparative examination of classical and contemporary exegeses to identify their contextual relevance within the social media ecosystem. Result: The findings indicate that these Qur’anic values establish a normative framework that promotes moderate, inclusive, and verification-based communication while preventing the escalation of digital conflict. Conclusion: The Qur’an serves as a comprehensive ethical guide to reducing religious polarisation in digital spaces by fostering dialogue, tolerance, and responsibility. Originality/Value: This study provides theoretical and methodological novelty in the field of Quranic studies and digital communication ethics by revealing a synthesis of normative Quranic values encompassing wasathiyyah, tabayyun, pluralism, religious freedom, and dialogic ethics through a comparative analysis of classical and contemporary interpretations regarding the mitigation of religious polarization within the context of the social media ecosystem, which has received limited thematic exegesis attention. These findings enrich conceptual frameworks and serve as a strategic reference in constructing religious based digital communication ethics, formulating online religious literacy guidelines, and mitigating conflict escalation in pluralistic virtual public spheres.

Abstract

Background: The rise of textual, rigid, and ahistorical religious understandings in Indonesia increases the risk of intolerance and radicalism. Objective: This study aims to deeply examine the concept of Islam Rahmatan lil ‘Alamin as a theological foundation for religious moderation amidst national plurality. Method: Employing a qualitative descriptive approach based on a literature review (library research), this study utilizes normative theological and sociological frameworks. Primary data are derived from the Qur'an (Surah Al Anbiya: 107) and religious moderation policy documents, analyzed through thematic analytical methods. Results: Findings indicate that Islam Rahmatan lil ‘Alamin serves as an active paradigm integrating vertical (hablun minallah) and horizontal (hablun minannas) dimensions. The values of compassion (rahmah) manifest through moderation principles (wasathiyyah) and are historically proven via Walisongo's peaceful, accommodative cultural dawah. Conclusion: Strengthening the Rahmatan lil ‘Alamin paradigm is crucial as a methodological solution to bridge religious extremities and maintain social harmony. Originality/Value: This study provides theoretical and epistemological novelty in the field of Islamic theology and sociology of religion by revealing the dialectical integration of vertical hablun minallah and horizontal hablun minannas dimensions through a synthesis of normative theological readings of Surah Al Anbiya 107 and historical precedents of Walisongo accommodative cultural dawah regarding the operationalization of Islam Rahmatan lil Alamin as an active theological foundation for religious moderation within the context of sustaining social cohesion against textual and rigid religious interpretations in Indonesia, an area that has received limited holistic scholarly examination bridging sacred texts, history, and policy frameworks. These findings enrich conceptual scholarship and serve as a strategic reference in formulating evidence based religious moderation policies, designing contextual dawah curricula, and mitigating radicalism and intolerance in pluralistic societies.

Abstract

Background: Discourse on religious moderation is frequently understood normatively and regulatively through top down policy programs that risk becoming detached from the actual experiences of believers. Objective: This study aims to analyze how perceiving religion as a human need contributes to the formation of religious moderation as a social praxis within the pesantren environment. Methods: This study employs a reflective qualitative method grounded in an insider position, with data collected through continuous observation, interviews, and literature study. Results: The findings reveal that religious moderation is experienced as a social praxis emerging from everyday religious experience (lived religion). Moderation values are manifested through the moral leadership of scholars (kiai), persuasive language, and prudent institutional role boundaries to maintain social harmony. Although effective in dampening open conflicts, this strategy of self restraint leaves boundaries in addressing structural problems. Conclusion: This study concludes that religious moderation is a dynamic and contextual social process rather than a completed normative indicator.  Originality/Value: This study provides theoretical and epistemological novelty in the field of sociology of religion and Islamic boarding school anthropology by revealing how perceiving religion as an existential human need fosters religious moderation as an organic social praxis through the moral leadership of kiai, persuasive discourse, and prudent institutional boundary maintenance regarding social harmony within the context of the daily lived experiences of pesantren communities, which has received limited scholarly attention due to the prevalence of top down, normative, and regulatory policy perspectives. These findings reconstruct religious moderation from static compliance metrics into a dynamic, negotiated social process while serving as a strategic reference in lived religion policy evaluation, localized conflict containment, and the design of grounded, community driven harmony initiatives.

Abstract

Background: Religious moderation (wasathiyyah) has become a crucial issue in the era of information openness and multicultural societies. Objective: This study aims to explore and analyze the lived experiences of students in internalizing religious moderation values within academic and social environments. Methods: Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, this study focuses on active students majoring in Islamic Business Management at FEBI, UIN Salatiga. Data collection was conducted through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation, analyzed via Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Results: The findings reveal that students interpret wasathiyyah as an inclusive, fair, and non discriminatory professional ethical guide in both lectures and entrepreneurial practices. Religious moderation serves as social capital and an ideological shield (digital tabayyun) against social media polarization. Conclusion: In conclusion, internalizing wasathiyyah successfully shapes an inclusive religious professional identity, harmonizing faith commitments with modern business demands in Salatiga City. Originality/Value: This study provides empirical and conceptual novelty in the field of higher education sociology and Islamic business ethics by revealing the internalization of wasathiyyah as an inclusive professional ethical guide, social capital, and an ideological digital tabayyun shield within academic activities and entrepreneurial practices regarding the formation of a professional religious identity within the context of student lived experiences in a multicultural campus environment in Salatiga City, which has received limited interpretative phenomenological inquiry in business faculties. These findings enrich empirical evidence and serve as a strategic reference in designing integrated Islamic business ethics curricula, formulating student character building policies grounded in religious moderation, and advancing service excellence frameworks in higher education.

Abstract

Background: Indonesia's cultural and religious diversity necessitates religious moderation, yet social media platforms like Instagram present risks of spreading intolerance alongside opportunities for inclusive dialogue. Objective: This study aims to analyze the characteristics of digital quotes on Instagram as an effective medium for disseminating religious moderation values among the young generation. Method: Employing a qualitative research approach integrating literature review and content analysis, this study examined thirty purposively selected Instagram posts published between 2025 and 2026. Results: Findings reveal tolerance as the most dominant value. Most high engagement posts featured informal nonconfrontational language, photo with caption formats, and personal account publishing during religious holidays. Conclusion: Digital quotes serve as an adaptive communication tool when combining attractive visuals, accessible language, and contextually strategic publishing times. Originality/Value: This study provides empirical and methodological novelty in the field of digital Islamic communication and social media sociology by revealing key characteristics of effective digital quotes combining compelling visual aesthetics, informal nonconfrontational language, photo caption formats, and strategic timing during religious holidays regarding the dissemination of religious moderation values predominantly tolerance within the context of youth media consumption on Instagram, an area that has received limited engagement based content analysis. These findings enrich empirical scholarship and serve as a strategic reference in structuring digital communication strategies, guiding content creators in youth targeted moderation campaigns, and optimizing social media literacy initiatives for educational and religious institutions.
